Or maybe the free to air network the actually holds those rights could use them to broadcast those matches.
No doubt Nine will regain the cricket plus the BBL. for the BBL games will be on Nine and 9Gem
Well thatâs explosive news! So theyâre going to carve out $300m for tennis and now $400m+ to get cricket back - the ratings margin of which couldnât be any more stark⌠Also leaving Seven with no summer sport?
I think Nine have (for the time being at least under TA contract) moved away from domestic summer cricket and their outgoing CEO has said there is no need to honour heritage sports at their network (cricket / NRL) as it has to be the right model and at the right price in these times.
Which is what the UK Ashes series have delivered and not surprising theyâve renewed (or possibly outbid a financially struggling Seven).
edit
In fact, doubtful itâd work even if they wanted and could afford both, as CAâs schedule usually always (BBL and possibly a Test) clashes with the Aus Open, let alone the other tennis lead-up tournaments in January.
This was the reason Seven sold the 2019 broadcast rights to Nine. Seven were planning on showing both, with Seven Melbourne executive Lewis Martin telling Melbourne radio as late as mid-late 2018 âour tennis unit is already getting readyâ but eventually realised it just wasnât going to work. Nine did a bloody good job getting everything together and ready a year early last year IMO!
The big question about Nineâs sports strategy moving forward is does the next CEO has have a different mindset about it than the one Hugh Marks had? If so, that throws the established wisdom about their thinking (like what you outlined) out the window
Would really love Channel Nine to do ball by ball commentary, because skyâs commentary is just horrible and doesnât suit for ad breaks and it is confusing after an ad when they are talking, and the commentators are boring and generally England biased. Channel Nine commentary would 100% suit it, and they should also do coverage of other Australian matches in England, as well as coverage of tours to other countries such as the Indian tour
I disagree completely. Skyâs cricket coverage is probably the best in the world. While the commentary is very English-biased there is probably little value for Nine to do their own ball by ball.
If anything some more Australians in the Sky box would help. From memory itâs mainly just Shane Warne on Sky.
Itâs way better than Nineâs team of commentators before they gave up cricket. Nine would be wise to continue their partnership with Sky.
Their coverage is just rubbish and awful, so annoying that I have to literally chuck on TMs and pause the tv for 15 secs to line it up and then switch the audio channel when nines studio is on
The multi channel ratings are what gave 9 the overall win last year.
SMH reports that as the current broadcast deal between Cricket Australia and Seven is due to go into arbitration, CA had spoken to Nine multiple times informally about whether it would consider taking on the broadcast rights to Test matches as early as January. The talks with Nine stopped after Seven paid a $12.5 million instalment to CA last Tuesday.
Channel 10 please!!!
I really donât think seven have a leg to stand on. And Nine and ten shouldnât take any rights as they are not exclusive. It would be pointless unless they are very cheap and can make profit from them.
CA couldâve avoided all this mess a couple of years ago and singed with nine and ten instead of all this nonsense.
Iâd prefer CA to terminate the deal with Seven considering it wouldnât even be worth it at a discount because of the fact that itâs non-exclusive.
Seven doesnât really want it anyway so why bother keep working with them.
CBS didnât back Tenâs bid and Nine wanted tests exclusively. Neither could offer the money that Foxtel were willing in 2018 to offer. Different times now though.
Seven want it, they just want a discount.
Nine might have a window this year with the âsummer of tennisâ pushed back and condensed, as well as the AO avoiding clashing with any cricket at all (I think) for the first time possibly ever?
But as the article rightly says and @cmo points out, at what price, CA are money hungry as we know from that cringe-worthy negotiations with 10, Seven, etc and need a commercial partner (also ruling out ABC like the old days) to ensure big sums, but with Nine paying bucket loads for NRL (although reduced now), tennis (which has delivered massive massive ratings) and now Rugby Union, as well as other factors and network costs⌠Seems very unrealistic unless there was a sudden all time disaster between Seven and CA for Boxing Day Test and NY Test
Best we can hope for is a reduced year term for the current Fox/Seven contract. Then for 2022-23 Nine with Stan Sport might have some weight to go for all rights including BBL.
Bring it back to Nine and Ten. Ten wants BBL on its own

Ten have exited from sport completely. ViacomCBS have no interest in expanding sport in the Australian market. Why would they want to jump back in now?
Your summary left out a crucial detail which is distorting the discussion occurring about it here - the informal talks between CA & Nine reportedly happened because CA thought Seven would default on making their installment payments (which would hence allow CA to terminate the agreement). The talks ended when it became clear they wouldnât.
This wasnât a case of CA unilaterally seeking to terminate the agreement - that would give rise (unless they approve otherwise) to Seven likely being able to successfully sue for breach of contract
ViacomCBS has little interest in Australian sport but is willing to pay big bucks to retain NFL and PGA golf rights in the US.
