At least Nein don’t put in pop-up advertisements between deliveries like Star/Ten Sports in India.
Happily watching the Australian domination, sans bogan audio.

They remind me a lot of the Fifa 17 graphics! But overall, I’d say it’s a decent improvement.
Loving the run through the days plays! Personally I got home at 7pm and have wondered what’s happened all day. All saved me from the dishers as the crickets still on…
The colouring just looks wrong. They need to ditch the dark green/dark blue, it is so dated.
The blue on blue font is also hard to read. As is the font itself, very narrow.
Big plus however for 2 commentators at a time, commentator cam, and the sit-down analysis before play. I felt uncomfortable previously watching them shuffle around standing.
Taylor, Healy and Slats need to be dumped next season (doubtful considering Taylor’s CA connections). However, Brayshaw, Lee and Hussey leaving this year was a great start.
With the cricket, do they use 9gem for when the 6pm news comes on, or do they wait for let’s say the tea or dinner break?
Correct, yesterday they switched coverage over to 9Gem while Nine News aired on Nine/9HD at 6pm.
Graphics are very 2004. Good to see a commentator cam, makes sense.
Channel 9’s new cricket technology endures hostile first reception
CHANNEL 9 has unveiled its fancy new cricket technology for the summer — and fans have already dismissed it as a blight on cricket.
Moments before captains Steve Smith and Faf du Plessis met in the middle for the toss of the coin, Wide World of Sports unveiled its new toy — Pitch Scan technology.
Unfortunately the nuances of pitch moisture went largely unappreciated with viewers.
Fans flocked to social media to ridicule the technogy and the constant mentions of the system from Channel 9 commentators.
Wasn’t a fan of the new graphics at first but they grew on me as the day went on - seems like a decent evolution of the previous package.
The one change I really liked was the inclusion of a post-stumps wrap-up instead of ending the coverage almost immediately after stmps. It remains to be seen whether it’s done throughout the Summer (eg; when stumps/tea break leads directly into Nine News in NSW/VIC) but it makes sense if they’re going to have an extended pre-game that they have a post-stumps element as well
I wouldn’t be surprised if the commentary team / new gizmos are one of the factors, that affected the ratings?
They have already copped it online!
(e.g.)
Two callers to 3AW radio’s TV segment with Neil Mitchell & Jane Holmes around 15min ago, both said the commentary team doesn’t have enough ex-Victorian players on the team.
Which I agree with.
There’s only Shane Warne at the moment, with a mystery disappearance from James Brayshaw & Bill Lawry is unwell.

I also laugh at how much Mark Taylor hates Melbourne, always loves to make a dig when he’s calling the Boxing Day Test & Cricket World Cup
“Um is that the Rialto tower… Or the Eureka tower… Um… Are… Not sure about that one” (one day when the chopper panned out of an ad break) & related digs
People that bag Melbourne are almost as annoying as people that forever brag about it.
Of course you agree. Only one based in Melbourne.
Am I the only one who doesn’t care where a commentator is from? Maybe us Adelaide folk are not biased towards different states.
Well Ch 9 don’t have anyone from WA either the last time I checked?
On the old graphics, the overs used to appear like that too - although the “trail by” graphic was centred. If I wanted to be picky, it also looks like the first batsman is left-aligned (judging by also looking at a live graphic with Shaun Marsh’s name there) while the second one is centred.
In the end, sure it’s more evolution than revolution, and it looks reasonable but some extra polish might’ve been desired.
That said, the graphics are also close to unwatchable on HD; like the graphics would be fine on a fuzzy analogue TV (and it’s… less pronounced but still there on SD) but it just looks like like it’s jumping up and down by a line on 1080i. Having to switch off ch90 for once and go back to SD to watch it, which is a shame.
Apologies for not knowing the actual term for the above phenomenon; I wouldn’t call it dot crawl but I’m sure there’s a technical term for it.
I think that has been the usual the past few years (with most Australian tests intending to draw stumps at 5:30 for a few years now, rather than 6) but that could also be due to most days running overtime due to slow over rates.
Probably more so they don’t have their schedules mucked up by the news running half an hour late, but when it actually runs on time, it gives them a good 20-30 minutes to reflect on the day. Complements them starting 30 minutes before the start of play too, rather than 10 minutes like they did back in the 90s.
I’ve just turned the cricket on and I didn’t see any noticeable jumping due to interlacing.
I mean, there’s a microscopic amount of jumping (I wouldn’t even call it jumping - more a variation in brightness on the top and bottom lines of the graphics) but you’d have to be actively watching for it to notice. Certainly not “unwatchable”. Perhaps it’s your TV?
It looks like the name for the phenomenon is “interline twitter”. You can see a recreation of old TV captions from the UK which faithfully recreate this here (watch in full screen HD to see it):
(If the embed doesn’t show up, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSTAWoER80Y)
Interline twitter can be effectively removed with a good enough deinterlacing method (the more complex/better ones require more computing power), so it really may be your TV.
Really? Why should it matter where they come from? What should matter is the quality of their commentary
You do realise he is trying to wind Lawry and Warne up?
Nine will be licking their lips with a more competitive day from South Africa. It actually sets up a close finish with Australia only getting 2 more runs than South Africa.
They’re probably Microsoft Surfaces. Part of the sponsorship deal. But I get where your coming from.
