Nine Cricket Coverage

The Sky coverage has been sub-par, seems that the cost-cutting in the cricket department has also extended to the production staff and camera operators. The commentators other than Hussain, Ponting, and Atherton have been pretty mediocre as well, a far cry from how good Sky used to be even 4-5 years ago.

So, not a single ball bowled before midnight. Interesting to see whether Nine kept the cricket audience entertained enough to stick around waiting for play to start.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in England …

And the rain delay has stretched it out now to another day.

Apparently Nine dropped the closing stages of the women’s Ashes T20 match coverage (which had been delayed due to rain in innings break) for Weekend Today. England won the match by five wickets (DLS method) to keep the overall series alive.

That tweet isn’t correct. The conclusion of the game was shown on 9Gem. The game started on 9Go! and switched to the main channel.

This screencap also showed that 9GO! aired part of women’s Ashes T20 due to overlap with the late finish of men’s Ashes test.

Weather forecast not looking flash again tonight, looks like it could start dry but certainly by lunch/S2 rain - at least for Nine should be a turn around from last night ratings wise, but it might not be good news for the contest/this test. Rain also forecast in London for Wimbledon.

Nine socials are telling people that The Ashes are on “channel 9” - strange.

Starc traps Duckett dead in front of the stumps, and we've got one on the board! 💪

Ratings should be massive again after another close finish on a Sunday night when there’s no AFL or NRL competition. Keeps the series alive too which should sustain interest.

Why’s it strange? Is it not on 9?

No it was not on “Channel 9” it was on 9Gem.

Nationwide?

I caught up with the final session of play from last night on 9Now this afternoon.

I like how you see the bits in between overs where 9/9Gem have ads, instead the 9Now ads are in a block about once every 20 minutes.

Picture quality not as good as 9/9Gem HD though.

As the series lands at Old Trafford in Manchester, England need to win to keep it alive while Australia, leading 2-1, must avoid consecutive losses in order to wrap the series up.

Nine’s commentary team is hosted by Roz Kelly, with expert comments from former Australian captain Mark Taylor, Ashes winner Ian Healy and former international Callum Ferguson. Taylor will be joined on the ground by Louise Ransome, with 9News reporter Sam Djodan filing from Old Trafford.

Mark Taylor said: “Australia have another chance to wrap up their first Ashes series win in England since 2001 in Manchester.

“However, England have renewed confidence and belief after their tight win in the Third Test at Headingley. Australia need runs from their big guns, namely David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith who were kept quiet last time out by the English bowling attack.”
