The Longest Feud: Chappell v Botham

Update

From the ashes of the oldest rivalry in sport comes an insight into cricket’s lasting conflict when The Longest Feud: Chappell v Botham goes to air on Tuesday, June 27, on Channel 9HD and streams on 9Now.

This hour-long Wide World of Sports special presentation unpacks the bitter rivalry between Australian cricket legend Ian Chappell and English champion all-rounder Ian Botham – a part of sporting folklore that spans five decades.

Put simply, Chappell and Botham detest and loathe each other and have never settled their differences.

In the middle of the 2023 Ashes series on Nine, and for the first time since their infamous pub fight that started it all back in February 1977, The Longest Feud: Chappell v Botham brings these two Ashes icons together, face-to-face, in an attempt to settle their entrenched differences.

“An Ashes series is the perfect time to peel back the layers and explore what started this monumental feud, and why it has gone on for so long. It’s compelling and in many ways it’s also very confronting.”

Cos Cardone, CEO of the program producers, JAMTV, said: “The two Ians personify everything about the Australia versus England rivalry. But they go way beyond that – they make it very personal, very real, and very raw.

Will old habits die hard, or after 46 years can they finally manage to break bread? There’s only one way to find out as this classic sporting rivalry bubbles to the surface for all to see in a riveting match-up on television.

The Longest Feud: Chappell v Botham was produced by JAMTV for Wide World of Sports.

Surprised Nine didn’t go to an ad break during this (between overs), also surprised this goes out on the world feed at all. Was up for a good 15 seconds.

Don’t tell me there cutting back on ads?

Australia have won the Test by 89 runs at Trent Bridge, with spinner Ash Gardner taking 8/66 for the innings, the best Australian performance of all time plus the second best of all time (8/53 Neetu David for IND v ENG Jamshedpur 1995), and 12/165 for the match, the second best of all time again (13/226 Shaiza Khan for PAK v WI Karachi 2004). The match was also the highest-scoring Women’s Test of all time, 40/1371, beating the previous best of 17/1143 between the same opponents at Guildford in 1998.

Australia takes a 4-0 series lead to start their Ashes defence.

I think Nine doesn’t actually still have the graphics package they last used in 2018 and these are in fact knock-offs. Words are misaligned all-over the place, the font is all wrong, elements are sized incorrectly and don’t match:

Yep, she hosts “Today at the Ashes” (normally “Today at the Test” or “Today at the cricket” for limited overs highlights) for BBC Two, and calls for that coverage plus radio Test Match Special.

It will be a busy period for Nine with its coverage of Rugby World Cup (covering all Wallabies matches plus the final on October 29) and Billie Jean King Cup finals (November 7-12) in the same period as ICC Cricket World Cup.

As for Cricket World Cup, Nine will show all the Australian matches, plus the opening match (England v New Zealand), both semi-finals and the final as the minimum, with other matches to be decided closer to the tournament opening.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they also show India v Pakistan & a few more (2? Blockbuster match ups)

They have generally leaned towards bigger match-ups as their additional games outside of Australia games and the finals, so India v England could be a possibility as well.

The Ashes: second Test exclusive on Nine

Australia is out to extend their 1-0 series lead by fighting fire with fire when the second Test of The Ashes airs exclusive, live and free from 7.30pm AEST tomorrow – Wednesday, June 28 on the 9Network and 9Now.

For all the hype around England’s Bazball playing style, it was the Aussies who made a statement in the First Test in a down-to-the-wire match that has set the tone for the series as it moves onto the home of cricket – Lord’s in London.

Pat Cummins delivered with bat and ball when under pressure, and will need batsmen Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith and Marnus Labushagne to squash the vocal threats of English bowlers Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson.

Nine’s commentary team is hosted by Roz Kelly, with expert comments from former Australian captain Mark Taylor, World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch and former international Callum Ferguson. Taylor will be joined on the ground at all five Tests by Louise Ransome.

Mark Taylor said: “The First Test lived up to all the hype and has set up a mouthwatering series. The contrasting styles of play are great to watch.

“After a narrow loss at Edgbaston, England have vowed to go harder. The Aussies have a great record at Lord’s, winning six of their last 10 Lord’s Tests and losing only two.

“Another Aussie win will go a long way to retaining The Ashes. An intriguing contest awaits.”

I thought the hosts would change? Finchy and SOK aren’t the most polished analysts.

They have, Ferg has come in and Steve O’Keefe has been given drinks duty!

:man_facepalming: of course. Will be good to have an experienced commentator in Ferg on (like with Villani on the Women’s).

Wasn’t sure where to post this (couldn’t find a thread since it’s a one off special), but did anyone see/have thoughts on last night’s “Longest Feud” (Ian Chappell and Ian Botham)?

The ending was rather limp and predictable, nothing like the ‘make up’ Nine’s promos said it might be.

I also thought Botham came across as more personable than Chappell, at least ‘Beefy’ seemed somewhat more willing to make an effort to bury the hatchet and move on, but Chappell just didn’t seem to be interested.

Here’s some old comparisons from this thread:

Now just a gradient, no seam or 9 logo

No more by-line or team logo (although seam is present on this one)

The reverse obviously but this one is also offset with the moving accent of various seams

Score graphics have moved from bottom left to top left and are minus the overs

But this weird thing is new

And I don’t have a cap to compare but considering it includes accents I’ll assume it’s the same

Best comparison I have between scorecards given 9 is using screenshots from Sky
