Problem is, there aren’t really many places for them to go… NZME/Stuff will probably take a few on, sure, but where does that leave everyone else? Newsroom? The Spinoff? As great as those two sites are they’re basically glorified blogs. Maybe MediaWorks can sign a couple of people for podcasts? Tbh the whole situation is pretty bleak.
From yesterday’s Herald (PAYWALLED):
Newshub may yet survive in some pared-back form as various parties - including rival media companies, private individuals and staff - quietly mull possible options to save the stricken news brand.
Media Insider understands Warner Bros Discovery is open to saving the brand and retaining the likes of the 6pm news on Three - it will no doubt be considering all internal and external possibilities. Right now, it is in a consultation period with staff - this has been extended to Monday.
One possible option is that Warner Bros Discovery buys the 6pm bulletin as a news service from another party, rather than continuing to bear the cost of operating a newsroom.
I could be wrong, but isn’t that how CRC Motorsport works?
I think some may move to Australia for work, and some others will leave the media sector altogether.
There’s plenty of former broadcasters in PR these days.
Maybe they could find a way to just keep AM and 6pm for half an hour… call it Three News again, and just pair it back, to at the very least give them some time to regroup and adapt rather than just pulling the pin.
That’s the thing, they’ve not tried adapting at all, just pushing out more bulletins over broadcast. I guess that was a desperate bid to sell more ads… and it clearly didn’t work.
RNZ/Stuff Article on the same:
The rumour seems to be some sort of arrangement with Stuff.
Hopefully Sky TVNZ is in the picture to give the Dinosaur TVNZ a run for the money with Quality News. Like ITN…
This is all very interesting.
- Sounds like it’ll be largely a ‘rip and read’ service - but that’s still infinitely better than no news at all!
- I like the sound of more foreign news - that’s something NZ needs more of. I wonder if Stuff (or whomever this Prince Charming of news is) might pair up with, say, ITN or CNN and show their reports?
- Would the news still be on at 6? If it’s going to be cut to 30 minutes I reckon it would be smart of Three to move it to 7pm.
- Interesting they mention Sky. I could see a scenario where they effectively do the same bulletin twice - once on Sky Open at 5.30 and again on Three shortly after. One presenter could do both shows.
My prediction
• Stuff signs a deal with Warner Bros. to produce their News on Three
•Newshub brand closes in late June and becomes Stuff
•A 1-hour bulletin at 6:00pm with AM or similar kept as a Morning News Show
Decision day for Newshub today as staff are preparing to hear their fate on if they will confirm shutdown or not.
On the other side, TVNZ has confirm it’ll axe their 12pm and late night bulletins, including Fair Go (but will be moved to online).
UPDATE: We understand that the meeting will take place shortly at 11:00am NZST.
BREAKING NEWS: Newshub closure has been confirmed. The whole division will shut down. (NZHerald reports).
Newshub Live at 6pm will also be canned, final bulletin airs July 5th.
Oh no - this is shocking!
Well, yes that would come with the whole operation being shut.
Looks like the news division will all shut down by that date as I mentioned.
Yeah - wonder if it’ll be progressive (ie Newshub late finish earlier than 6 etc)
