That’s Right
It’s eerie how this whole situation shows similarities to how Today FM closed last year. Gutting.
The unholy thing to do, Who is a good idea that they want to close down their News division
The new-led government says saving Newshub is “highly unlikely”
Newshub’s closure will continue the recent decline of the news services in the country, which began with the closure of NZPA (New Zealand Press Association) in 2011.
I’m sure Network 10 would strongly disagree with your statement
Then it truly is over. How anticlimactic.
I don’t think it’s the role of the government to intervene here - as sad as this all is.
The time for government reform was 20-25 years ago - no one saw the beast of the internet being as bad as it was in terms of taking the commercial dollar and eyeballs away and what it meant for news.
Reform is an ongoing necessity, especially as problems emerge, like giant global corporations siphoning news content for free, for example. Australia dealt with it, why won’t NZ?
It’s a sorry state when New Zealand’s media is staffed like an Australian provincial market.
You are right but as I said up thread - it won’t work now. Implementing news regulations onto broadcasters now will just see them exit the market entirely and I’m not sure it viable for anyone to pick up the pieces.
The siphoning of news content via social media and other platforms is a major issue - I hope the horse hasn’t bolted.
I’m not disagreeing with your first point, but had our legislators done something about it when they did in Australia, the closure of Newshub may" have been avoided.
" It seems, like the Project, that discussions will lead nowhere… the decision’s already been made by those in the USA.
I think the big issue is the advertisers or lack there of.
If TVNZ had had to move to a non-commercial model - even for 1 of their channels - 20 years ago, it would have meant more advertising pie available for Three. Whether it would have been enough I’m not sure.
It may have got them another five years, but we’ll never know.
I wonder if this means CRC Motorsport gets the chop too? If not, it would be about the only other thing that gets broadcast from their own studios, right?
The WBD Asia Pacific boss is on ZB now - I’m going to be offline for a bit the audio will be worth a listen. Saying 100 million has gone out of the ad market in a couple of years.
Confirms that it’s all local productions gone.
WBD AU-NZ vice pres. Glen Kyne was aware of the closure proposal in January; talked with RNZ Checkpoint this afternoon.
Surely it’s time to start thinking about linking up Australian and New Zealand news services, surely it’d be beneficial to both countries to amortise costs. New Zealand clearly can’t do it on their own anymore.
