NZ Herald reports that Paddy Gower Has Issues will close under the proposal, but his documentaries will remain online due to NZ on Air funding.
Strange they are stretching it out til June. You’d imagine staff will just start looking for other jobs right away.
Also likely tied in with WBD’s record low stock price and their abandonment of a Paramount deal.
30th June is the end of Q2 2024. They’ll want to puff up whatever financials they have coming up.
Any chance of government “intervention” perhaps via NZ On Air to partially support news delivery.
I doubt that under this Government.
Indeed.
Isn’t a TV licence requirement for news bulletins for Three (and Sky Open)?
I wish Paramount Global will buy TV3. If WBD will sell TV3. You all gotta find out
Expect Newshub’s proposal to be closed at the end of June will be their biggest top story of the 6pm bulletin tonight. Very saddening.
Is there anything WBDiscovery don’t stuff up?
No. There are NO conditions on NZ Television Broadcasting Licenses, other than technical specifications. They can air what they like so long as it’s not offensive or defamtory &c (as per a bunch of rules the broadcasters make up themselves).
Paramount Global would be much better investing Newshub than WBD. It is stink that we will be back to TVNZ monopoly on News first time since the end of 1989
Changes are likely to include canning:
- Newshub Live at 6pm/Late bulletin (including the Newshub website)
- Married at First Sight NZ (currently in production)
- AM Show
- Paddy Gower Has Issues
- Newshub Nation
- New 7pm current affairs show with Ryan Bridges
- The Block NZ
So, excuse my ignorance (not an NZ’d-er)
What is the difference between Newshub and TV3?
Did Newshub produce the news and current affairs content for TV3?
TV3 is the channel and Newshub is their news brand, which is owned by them
Bloodbath. Terrible.
So, 3 and Newshub are both owned by Discovery?
They’re effectively killing the news arm, but keeping the channel?
When you think about it, the news division is the heart and soul of every good FTA channel. In a landscape where viewing isn’t dictated, controlled or revolves around a schedule, news programming not only allows channels to be connected to their viewers but is one of the few must see live aspects of modern TV.
Moreso than other channels, 3 News/Newshub has been Three’s heart and soul across many years (and a few tough periods). WBD proposing to shut down the entire news division is not only a devastating day for New Zealand’s media landscape but a landmark moment as well.
There seriously needs to be some government reform here.
