I guess AM Early & Newshub Live at 11.30am are gone burger.

Still in the guide for tomorrow. Plus their resources are just AM and early news start staff. Can’t imagine it being that big a cost to run.

I want to believe you but they said that about 4.30 and 8pm which were all axed. I’m picking that AM Early and 11.30am won’t be renewed for the 2024 season. Such a shame as I enjoyed having various bulletins throughout the schedule which is something TVNZ would never commit to.

Wasn’t MW losing about that much per annum before Discovery took over the TV arm?

Look I could be wrong.

But 4:30 was being produced by early news staff and those on prime a bit of a harder sell to get stories early instead of for 6pm.

8PM was post my time so I’m not 100% sure on their production schedule. But at a guess it would have been later news staff and those on late news preparing an earlier version of late with some bits from 6pm.

Would be hard to say without looking directly at the books but this herald article sounds like it may line up.

If they are axed then it won’t be straight away anyway. Probably AM Early and 11.30 will be dropped quietly at Christmas (as @Leotv already suggested!)

doesn’t TVNZ have a show at 6am and at bulletin midday?

Reviewing the updated rate cards on the WBD website it looks like Newshub Late is being moved to 9:30pm on Three. This will be quite a change up for late evening programming on that network.

Looks like they will still jump about in the schedule though

Yeah they do but I’m talking about the axed 4.30pm and 8pm bulletins they used to operate. The 8pm bulletin was quite handy when missing out the 6pm and not wanting to watch the replay on demand.

Reading the rate card again, didn’t realize Three had what can be called a “current affairs block” on Tuesday nights.

The lineup will stay the same when Late moves up, now being joined by an episode of Beachfront Bargain Hunt to cap off the night before the infomercials kick in.

Is this per ad?

I belive so, but you can’t really buy just one ad.

Oh I see. Wouldn’t have the catch-up on demand been handier than a fixed schedule bulletin though? I mean how much was really updated between the two?

That 8pm bulletin would of been handy for the January floods in Auckland tbh. News is always changing and the 8pm bulletin had in-depth interviews.

Having a programme isn’t the same as having reporting sadly. I think that’s often missed by people who haven’t worked in newsrooms.

It always fundamentally comes down to staffing more than anything else and, from a TV producer’s point of view, long-form interviews are just a great way to pad out for time. And hey, if you have a versatile interviewer and good interviewee - then it might just make for a great show regardless.

e.g. Newshub Late and 1 News both had pitiful coverage of the Auckland floods on the night, cause 75% of the newsroom goes home after 7pm. It’s always going to be staffing and rostering that limits coverage, not the actual timeslots. More programmes actually tend to just stretch your capacity.
