It wasn’t just ATN7 Sydney, GTV9 Mebourne or even BTQ7/QTQ9 Brisbane (or TVW7 Perth) that used DeWolfe Music’s “Fast Action” (taken from the “New Generation” album composed by The Laurence Stephen Orchestra). But NWS9 Adelaide also used it as well before switching to “Cool Hand Luke” like most of Nine were using (when they briefly adopted the “Nine Action News” name), see link here: (youtu.be/Wkieh9YFQ28).

I’ve reently started to notice that Channel Nine in Victoria used to have a different variation of news themes and graphics compared to other stations around the country.
For example, in the 90s all Channel Nine and Nine-affiliated stations (except NBN) used the iconic Cool Hand Luke theme. Victoria’s stations, while using that theme, used a variant that had more distinctive timpani and louder “bongs” if that’s what you call them, as well as an additional repeat of the above sounds. But it recurred in the 21st century. After the faster Cool Hand Luke theme was introduced, all stations replaced the timpani with fast violins. However, Victoria kept the timpani, but tuned it so it sounded one octave lower.
They even didn’t match up with other stations’ graphics until 2004, but even that was altered to show more of the Melbourne skyline.
In 2006, after the flying billboard design was introduced, Melbourne briefly adopted the same theme as all other stations. However, due to dwindling ratings and apparent viewer criticism, they brought back the previous theme altogether and shuffled the graphics around. Now, when the presenter introduced the top stories, it would show the date instead of the title.
Does anyone have any clue to why Victoria always had a different theme compared to other Ch9 stations?

I know right? I’m sorry I was really stuck on which word to use and eventually I ended up with that.
It’s not only theme music where the Melbourne bulletin has always been different to others.
They’ve never used supers to identify reporters until this year (except for a live cross). And the newsreader always mentions the reporters name in the report intro. I don’t think other bulletins have done these things.
I wonder what’s the reason? Is it because the Melbourne producers want to stand out or something?

Radio stations 4BK Brisbane and 6IX Perth also used the theme as stated in the comments.
From 1991, the last CBS Evening News close featuring the 1987 theme:
News theme used by RTS5A in the late 1990’s. Going by the video it looks like it was used in Asia as well. I’m not sure if this was used anywhere else in Australia.
This is a production track from Megatrax called News 2000. In the U.S., it was used as a news theme by WGNX in Atlanta:
I thought that was the old Letterman Late Show theme music at the start there.
