Any idea what’s happening in Adelaide with the ABC? Numbers have been dropping all year.

National

Nine had a rare national win - reach, average and BVOD. Nine improved by 44,000 on the previous week, ABC was up 18,000, 10 by 3,000. Seven lost 9,000.

Week 31 of 2024 included the Paris Olympics. That saw Nine lower year-on-year while the other bulletins improved.

Seven’s metro audience was down 33,000 on the previous week while Nine (25,000) , ABC (17,000) and 10 (4,000).

Compared to 2024, that included the Olympics, most bulletins were higher.

Week 32

National

News ratings were lower this week compared to week 31 with Nine suffering the biggest drop off 55,000 while Seven lost 30,000, 10 was down 12,000 and ABC edged lower by 6,000. Overall, Seven had a national win by 12,000.

Compared to this week in 2024, that included the Paris Olympic coverage, Nine suffered a drop. There was little change for Seven and 10 while ABC was up by 21%.

Nine had another +100,000 win in the metro market despite dropping by 54,000. Seven’s metro average was down by 21,000 with 10 and ABC both down 9,000. 10 Brisbane bucked the trend improving by 10,000 after a poor result in the previous week. Sydney and Melbourne posted gains for ABC as well.

ABC News was up 22% on the same week last year that included the Olympic Games with Sydney and Perth the biggest improvers. 10 Brisbane also posted a good result.

Week 33

National

Seven had another narrow win, the margin this week was just 6,000 viewers across Australia. In an interesting development, Nine’s news has recently started to be number one in reach, an area Seven had dominated. In average viewing numbers, Nine was up 19,000 on last week, Seven 2,000 while 10 was down 9,000 and ABC by 5,000.

Compared to the equivalent week of last year 10 was notable for reversing its recent upward trend, no doubt impacted by the 10 News+ failure.

The majority of bulletins improved their ratings this week compared to last including Nine by 34,000, ABC by 30,000 and Seven by 25,000. 10 bucked the trend and lost 2,000. The biggest individual bulletin change was Nine Brisbane, up by 16,000.

Compared to the same week last year (that did not included BVOD), Nine showed big improvements in all markets with Adelaide up a massive 40%, a continuing trend. Perth’s 10 bulletin took another big hit dragging down the metro result while ABC bulletins in two markets also lost ground.

Week 34

Nine News was number one in Australia in week 34. It had the highest average, highest reach and largest BVOD audiences. In a close week Seven News dropped 18,000 from the previous week, Nine was steady with 10 (7,000) and ABC (11,000) posting moderate increases.

Nine’s audience was a 12% improvement on week 34 of 2024 while ABC also improved by 6%. 10 and Seven weren’t changed much as all achieved significant BVOD improvements.

Nine also won the 5-city market despite losing audience as Seven was also down with most fluctuations small. ABC also edged lower with 10 up by just 6,000.

All but two bulletins posted improvements on 2024 (that did not include BVOD). ABC News in Sydney surged, closing in on Seven News. Nine News also had several bulletins post significant gains including 29% in Adelaide and 31% in Melbourne. Nine Brisbane’s new reading duo would be happy with the results of the first week.

Week 35

National

Seven News improved by 37,000 to win week 37 while 10 was up by 15,000 and Nine by 5,000. ABC, however dropped 21,000.

All bulletins rated higher than the equivalent week of 2024 with Nine up the most by 16%.

All ABC bulletins lost ground while all Sydney and Brisbane bulletins also rated lower this week compared to the last. In Melbourne Seven (17,000) and Nine (14,000) posted higher gains than any bulletin across the country.

Compared to this week in 2024, ABC News was the standout performer. The bulletin continues to close the gap to Seven News in Sydney with this week the smallest so far. The potential is for ABC News to become the number two bulletin in Sydney. Nine News also continued to gain significant ground in Adelaide and Perth.

The sooner ABC News at 7pm provides an actual summary of the day’s news the better. Shockingly horrible bulletin that is.

Who has been reading Sydney’s 7pm ABC the last couple of weeks?

Is the ABC doing anything in Adelaide? Week after weeks it’s always in the red.

Seems like the ABC viewers are switching to Nine - perhaps more regular AFL on Thursday at 7pm having an impact.

Week 36

National

Average audiences for the three commercial bulletins were lower this week with Seven losing 26,000 viewers, Nine down by 21,000 and 10 by 14,000. ABC edged 5,000 higher. Overall, Seven scored a win with another small margin, this week just 9,000.

All bulletins rated higher than the equivalent week of 2024 with Nine up by an impressive 16% and Sevens’ BVOD numbers double last year’s.

5 cities

Mostly small changes week-on-week with Nine up 4,000, 10 down 3,000 and Seven down 2,000. ABC was the stand out with a 22,000 improvement with Melbourne contributing 20,000.

All bulletins rated higher than 2024 with Nine up between 23% and 36% in every market. 10 Brisbane celebrated its one year Mt Coot-tha/Sharyn Ghidella anniversary with a 35% lift while ABC News Sydney continues to impress.

National
Seven won this week by just 1,000 viewers, with the average bulletin up 8,000 while NIne’s was up 17,000. ABC improved by 5,000 while 10 dropped by 1,000.

Nine was up 17% on this week last year as BVOD viewing continued to be well up for all networks.

ABC and Seven were up on the previous week by 20,000 and 14,000 respectively. Nine dropped 3,000 and 10 by 4,000.

Nine’s bulletins in all markets continued to post big gains in all markets compared to this week last year.

Week 38

All news bulletins rated lower in week 38. ABC was down by an average of 70,000, Nine by 35,000, Seven by 18,000 and 10 by 10,000. The downward trend will probably continue especially when daylight savings starts in several markets.

Compared to last year, Nine continued to be ahead of the field while the other bulletins were roughly steady.

National

Compared to Week 38 of 2024

5 cities

Across the 5-city market there was a decrease in most bulletins from last week. ABC was 51,000 lower, Seven by 38,000, Nine by 28,000 and 10 by 22,000. A few bulletins were up by small amounts.

Compared to last year (when there was some data missing) the general trend for Nine bulletins to rate higher continued especially Adelaide and Perth.

National

Another close week where Nine News (by 15,000) and Seven News (by 13,000) rated lower on average while ABC improved by 54,000 and 10 by 2,000.

BVOD continued to boost the ratings.

Seven News was up in all markets except Brisbane compared to the previous week while the reverse was true for Nine, though overall the changes were small.

Nine continued to post significant gains on last year.

National

ABC News was up 20,000 from last week with Nine posting an increase of 12,000 while 10 lost 20,000 and Seven was slightly lower by 4,000.

10’s bulletin was lower than last year’s in this week while Nie was up an impressive 17%. BVOD viewing continued to provide gains for all networks.

Nine News posed a +100,000 win helped by +10,000 gains on the previous week in Melbourne and Adelaide. Seven News in Sydney suffered a 19,000 drop and ranked behind ABC News.

More impressive gains for Nine’s bulletins in all markets compared to last year (that did not included BVOD) with Adelaide up a huge 66% and Perth 50% higher.

National
The impact of the start of Daylight Savings Time was evident as the average audiences dropped across the board from the previous week. Nine News had a rare clean sweep winning on all measures as Seven News’ average audience dropped by 58,000 compared to a 18,000 drop for Nine while ABC lost 25,000 and 10 was down 5,000.

Compared to last year, 10 was down 6% with Nine doing best up 15% as 10 lost viewers in the 6-7pm timeslot to its commercial rivals.

DST’s impact was evident across the affected markets. Seven News posted its lowest ratings for the survey in Sydney and Brisbane as did 10 News in Melbourne.

Yet so many contributors were hailing the new set for Ten Melbourne as being some kind of game changer for its ratings. So much for that theory.
