I’m going to just say it. News Breakfast is lazy. There’s a whole world of stories to report, yet they only cover the same 6-8 over the entire broadcast. Repeat, ad nauseam. Lazy.
If you didn’t think that was lazy, how about the ‘Investigative journalism’? When they report on hospitals being overcrowded and emergency departments unable to cope with demand, do they ever ask why this is happening? No.
When they report on bowel cancer rates being at unprecedented levels in young people, do they ever ask why? Start getting into the nitty gritty of why? No, because lazy.
They just ‘report’ the same old 6-8 stories. No investigation, no questioning. This applies to all old fashioned media.
I’m ready for the comments ‘but but it’s news breakfast and it’s meant to be a bit of fun’ Well, in that case remove the word ‘news’ from the title.
And don’t get me started on whoever appears at what ever time of the week.
With all the money we give the ABC we deserve more than the same 6-8 reports over 3 hours.

It certainly is the less polished of the morning shows, and does give an impression of being a bit captain-less.
Agreed on the repetition (for the news channel in general too) and the merry go round of personalities.
Not sure I would say NB is fun however.

it’s not lazy. It’s the nature of breakfast TV which cycles the same stories every 15 or so minutes over a three hour show because nobody sits and watches three hours of breakfast TV. Sure it can, and should, ask some “why” questions but unless it’s a quick audio bite they will probably leave it to the big guns like 7.30 or Four Corners or whoever to go in-depth.

And what’s with the extended ‘interviews’ of sports people instead of more noteworthy people? Why not spend that 5 minutes talking in depth and asking hard questions to more important people. Because, it’s easy to fill time with athletes, harder with intellectuals. Once again, Lazy.
Ok then, just remove the word ‘news’ from the title. Problem solved

Here’s the thing though, it’s not just news breakfast, it cover the entire ABC news platform. They select 6-8 stories a day and repeat them. You may get a new one after 24 hours, or god forbid a breaking news event. The stories you see at 6am will be the same at 2pm.
I’m sure A LOT has happened in that time, but for some reason whatever system they have implemented to release news is very slow moving.

We’re packing our bags and hitting the road. James Glenday and Emma Rebellato are joined by Catherine Murphy and Nate Byrne with the latest news, sport and weather live from Western Sydney to mark Ramadan and Lunar New Year.

Are people really looking for hard hitting investigations at 7am? For many, breakfast TV is background while they are doing other things to get themselves and children out the door.
Yes, Sunrise and Today get more attention, but it’s not because they are serving up hard hitting journalism or analysis. It’s usually that a politician has said something provocative or one of the hosts has behaved like a clown (or was drunk, as was the case this week….)

I find a lot of the abc is like that, so much repeats on abc radio to. I just wish they’d cut the cringy banter and get to the weather.
There’s a difference between long form investigative journalism and an interview that’s more than a precursory summary of a thing. NB under Virginia and Michael got to the crux of a matter, covered significant national and world news and didn’t dumb down culture and arts reporting. It’s point of difference was why they got decent numbers against Today and Sunrise. From when Lisa joined it’s been all downhill since. Now it’s just a marginally less shit version of Today and Sunrise that doesn’t totally insult your intelligence.
