I’ve noticed that in the past, and not just on the weekend. Their local correspondents don’t seem to be available until later in the program so they rely on overseas stories early on. This morning was particularly bad where I don’t think they crossed to one Australian reporter during the whole show.
Great. So it definitely wasn’t just me then who noticed this.
Exactly - the weekday program also seems to have a habit of airing long form stateline content during the 6am slot - also not 100% sure about this, but they may have also dropped the early morning newspaper and website headlines segment - was good for a quick check on what the major sites are talking about.
They have 60+ newsrooms, yet most of them seem to be focused on long-form content rather than breaking news.
Has the show (both weekdays and weekends) dropped in viewership this year? I just don’t feel informed at all during the times I’ve dipped in and out.
Not sure about specifics, but it looks like (at least from what I have seen) a decline in viewership from when they were outrating Today on a regular basis - also coincided with more of a lifestyle type focus throughout the show over the past few years.
Clearly whoever is the EP wanted to make changes to the show to try and get more people across from the commercials through the soft lifestyle content, however, they forgot why are large portion of the audience came to them in the first place - because it’s News Breakfast.
I can only compare the 5-city rating this year to last year. There has been an average weekly drop between 10,000 and 20,000.
Well at least we know he’ll be wearing his vest.
As expected James Glenday announced as Michael’s replacement. Catherine Murphy permanently joining the team as sport presenter.
Excellent appointments - both are great presenters, and are already familiar with the audience
If Catherine is on sports then what’s Charles role?
It was mentioned when he joined the team in Melbourne that he would also be doing some producing roles, so I guess he will be doing that and filling in when Catherine is away.
He has also done some reporting in the past for the ABC Sports team, so I guess he will also be doing some more of that as well.
Good appointment.
It will take time but I wish this new team well.
Hopefully we see an update to the set. A freshen up should be in the works .
Catherine is a good addition. Should liven it up a bit
I’d just be happy if they updated the main backup and fixed the lighting, but really they just need some consistency with the presenting line-up and to go back to basics with what made the show successful in the earlier years.
Even then presenters were often away for various periods (Paul Kennedy a notable one), however, at least they had a decent newsier format and content that resonated with the audience.
I find her irritating. Her explanation of sport is simplistic and uninformed.
Nate desperately needs a new wardrobe. Michael Rowland took him shopping at Oxford back in 2017 and since then he hasn’t once updated his on-air attire.
It really is.
Faziuah is terrible, Joanna is only marginally better.
They insist on having the presenters almost interview the sports host, rather than just let her do a sports update. I find it largely unwatchable.
