New format today. It is a bit messy, particularly at the top of the hour. Michael and Lisa read a news story each, before having a chat about the feature entertainment interview coming up. Then it’s over to Madeliene who just RVOs the next (five) news stories. Then it’s back to Michael and Lisa to read the market figures (even though Madeliene still does the finance segments later). They then do a lighter story and then throw over to Tony to read one sports story. After Nate does the weather, it’s back to Michael and Lisa for more news.

If she is hosting or is away (which is at least once a week), they revert to the old format of having no newsreader.

Nate did weather live from Sydney for National Science Week.

Friday (18.08.2023):

Michael is presenting live from Canberra to mark the 50th anniversary of Australia’s withdrawal from the Vietnam War. Stephanie Ferrier is co-hosting with Lisa back in studio.

There is no weather presenter today.

Monday (21.08.2023): Rani Hayman on sport.

Gosh all sounds so slapdash. I guess when you have main cast who only work 75% of their roster you need that buffer.

I think the difference is that fun and chemistry is part of the commercial morning shows, but always very forced and fake when News Breakfast tries it.

The chemistry was great when Virginia was on the show. Michael and VT had very different personalities and that’s what made the show back then great. Now Michael and Lisa both try to be a bit goofy and daggy. For Michael it’s natural but you can see how forced it is for Lisa.

We don’t watch any more, partly because of this, the weaker team (bar Tony) and also because whenever you turn it on they seem to be cross promoting a boring ABC show or doing some other naff entertainment thing. Stick to the news!

News Breakfast has started using one of Insiders’s set pieces to cover the space where the couch used to be this week. Looks better but is a bit too dark.

It looks like that was a temporary set-up. Yesterday they finally spruced that side up a bit. The lighting is better. From today:
