Because that happen to the American programmes airing on Prime, if that channel closes down??
Neon/Sky Go/Sky 5. Any number of homes for it.
Does Sky have any obligation to keep the channel going? Legal or otherwise?
Could it be sold? I realise itās probably not worth much, if anything to a prospective buyer.
Could Discovery pick it up as a whole owned multi-channel?
I am think it is very unlikely at this stage, because I really donāt know at the moment.
There are no obligations for Sky to keep the channel going, we have a very deregulated television market here. I can only see ViacomCBS being interested in acquiring it if it were put up for sale. Seems like a long shot but theyāve brought channel 5 UK and 10 Australia, they may want a little channel from NZ to join their portfolio.
TV4 said there is Bugger-all assets and it is likely be shut down rather be sold off, but iām agreeing with you that I was thinking about sale that ViacomCBS could buy Prime and turn this no infrastructure small channel into a bigger bolder channel.
I just had a look at Primeās schedule and it seems like Sky already have programming agreements with ViacomCBS for their channels.
Whether that would stay exclusive with Sky if a sale was to occur iām not sure, but interesting nonetheless.
Most of the kids programming is from Nickelodeon and thereās someone daytime stuff like Judge Judy, Wheel of Fortune, Jeapordy and sitcom repeats like Everybody Loves Raymond.
Primetime shows includes NCIS:NO, FBI, SEAL Team, Late Show with Stephen Colbert etc.
By looking that this definitely go to ViacomCBS sale, plus they are getting NCIS:Hawaii and FBI: International next year.
It also makes more sense for Sky to do that than using Prime as the FTA outlet because they get to promote their platform/channels to a bigger audience (eg; TVNZ will probably attract a big audience for their the Tokyo Olympics coverage) whilst still being able to ensure the FTA coverage doesnāt cannibalize their offering. The way Threeās Wimbledon coverage becomes more restricted as the tournament goes along (going from live coverage to selected QFs/SFs and then delayed finals) is a perfect example.
I wonder if Sky will offer Prime to CBS for a symbolic dollar or as a joint-venture. All theyād need were the few contracts to to Kordia/JDA to broadcast, a place to do sales (or contract that out) and for playout⦠all that could be handled by Sky or contracted out, or as far as playout/scheduling goes, would it be possible to run Prime from 10 Sydney?
Sky still show their NZ produced sports shows around 6pm-7:30⦠I wonder if long-term theyāll talk with TVNZ to put that sort of thing on Duke instead?
Edit: The thing about all this is that Prime have still been going to NZ On Air for programme funding (as recently as May this year), so they must still have some intent to continue broadcasting something?
TVNZ to screen daily Olympics coverage LIVE, delayed and curated starting at 12:30pm (weekdays) and 12pm (weekends); and going throughout the night at 2am from July 23-August 8 in partnership with Sky.

The joint venture with ViacomCBS is a very attractive proposition for Sky considering the shared costs involved. I wonder if they are looking at this option. I donāt know if itās too late but the network needs a real push to increase its share even though these are difficult times for FTA. Iām being a bit patriotic and wouldnāt want play out controlled from Sydney imho but the way things are going, itās a possibility. The sports talk shows in the 6-7pm slot on Prime do offer a point of difference to the other twoās nightly news programmes, Iām wondering if Duke might consider making their own with the backing of SparkSport but lately Sky are increasingly partnering with FTA, so maybe Duke would be a good fit for them. I guess the continued NZonAir funding applications does signal some life left in the little battler. Time will tellā¦
But would it be for ViacomCBS?
Depends how they can leverage the channel with synergies between existing deals in NZ, both in program distribution and their pay TV channels, as well as with the Australian business and using it as an opportunity for launching Paramount+ there.
I reckon that will have to cut down on lowbrow programs to aim to increase funding for program rights from CBS to maximise for the Paramount+
Sky TV NZ will release itās future plans of system upgrade to market tomorrow. Press Release in the morning.
Like in Australia, thereāll be a new home for the Champions League with Spark Sport picking up the rights
Who had it last?
Sky Sport I thinkā¦
