Do we really need TVNZDuke+1? Seems like a waste of bandwidth tbh

It also was broadcast on TV2

Nope, Leo, we don’t, especially given TVNZ have been shifting content away from Duke to TV2, and repeating stuff endlessly (Taskmaster is a prime example of this).

I actually thought they were slowly pulling the plug, ala Mediaworks with TV4/C4/FOUR.

I’d really like to see the +1 channels dumped further down the LCN order too, hogging 6 7 8 9 is plainly rude, and probably anti-competitive.

That’s what I thought as well, what’s the point considering most of the content airs on TVNZ 2. Duke launched with some good content but now is unwatchable imo. To use the last of their bandwidth on another plus 1 channel is criminal surely another niche channel could of filled it and like you said all the plus1 channels should be demoted down the LCN.

With all the catch up services, + 1 channels seem fairly redundant nowadays. You’d think they’d eventually wind them back and try and get people to use the catch up services.

Apparently not, according to NZ networks we need them. They must generate enough income to sustain them, if only our networks would look to your Freeview platform and see the variety in channels.

This sort of explains the business case for Discovery buying Mediaworks TV…

“The real advantage that we think we have is you have mostly big U.S services with a little bit of local,” Zaslav said. “We have dramatic local—local entertainment, we have all our brands and cable content in language in 200 countries, and all throughout Europe we have local sports. …We have an extensive library as well as the real local elements, and as you look at all the other players, they have a huge disadvantage here. We think we are at a significant advantage.”

Worldwide, Discovery has looked to keep ownership of its own content “for a long time,” Zaslav said, laying the groundwork for the streamer. The company will also explore the ability to add local sports and local news in certain markets, to continue to differentiate it from other streamers whose libraries are in some cases dominated by scripted series and movies.

Just looking at the schedule across the week, they make it seem that way. And the shows they feature/repeat nightly are also repeated on TVNZ2. Probably just more evidence that FTA is slowly diminishing as these shows probably rate okay.

I think in the early years of Duke a lot of the US shows moved from TVNZ2 didn’t last long in their respective slots and were relegated to later slots on Duke.

TVNZ has been home to the Goodnight Kiwi for many years but when it comes to nightly closedowns, a test pattern is the most common.

So that’s why Mark Richardson isn’t part of Magic Talk’s commentary team!

Whispers suggest he might make special appearances for Magic Talk…(most likely in the TVNZ simulcasted Spark games as Mediaworks are happy to release him for Spark but won’t want him on TVNZ)

Duke +1 Has popped up on Terrestrial Channel 18. Showing loop at present. I guess it will start from December 1?

I’ve just looked as well, it is on channel 18. December 1st sounds like the logical launch day. I guess this is the last channel to launch on Freeview from the big networks, so riveting it’s a plus 1 channel.

There will be a NZ version of The Masked Singer next year, on Three.

So if its on Three, expect half of them to be Mediaworks personalities.

The slate of new / returning programming for three in 2021 is pretty underwhelming
The project returning is surprising as it’s getting outrated by seven sharp most nights I only watch it when Nadine Higgins is on as she is great talent
The AM Show is back why ???
As the two main hosts do not resonate with the viewers compared with TVNZ Breakfast which is very watchable & the hosts are very likable
News hub / three NewsI’ve watched since tv3 / three started back in November 1989 , Mike Mcroberts is good but Tom Mcrae would be better used on Newshub at 6 with Sam Hayes as he was great on election night with Sam & has great energy

This is only programming launch until Discovery’s takeover, personal and presenter changes will be on hold I suppose. 3 and TVNZ News will have new Editor in Chief starting late December, so any changes will be made 2021 season, as with Sky and their Upgrade System, the Broadband uptake.
