New Zealand TV

Looks like a near duplicate of the Australian system with MA15+ as “16” and AV15+ as “18”. It is actually better than us because those ages make more sense than the lazy “15” we use across the board.

This seems to be a little bit strange, isn’t it?

How so? It’s called Negative Vertical Intergration (NVI), whereby a bunch of economists and accountants tell the CFO, who tells the CEO, who ignores the advice of the Board of Directors, and calls all the staff in one day and tells them 90% of their jobs are to be slashed, programmes will be cut, and non-core stuff will be removed so only the core remains because the core is delicious, no matter what some might say; all so they can wipe the face-capital value off the company, restack it, rebrand it, reintegrate it, reimagine it, and devalue it to a point where the company is wothless; the Creditors then give up, wipe the debt and the profitable arm of the company takes over with a symbolic $1 transfer, and the business continues to run under that arm until they do it all again in about, say, seven years; to avoid going back into receivership because the Marketing arm aren’t keen on the bad publicity that brings in, thus tying the CEO’s hands to the liquor cabinet in his swish leather-clad office until he submits. Really, those CEO’s get it from all ends, don’t they. Better give them a bonus too, while we’re re-coring the core of the business, and thus, the business isn’t quite saved, but the CEO’s face is. For an example, refer to RNZ, as they are currently mid-stream in this process.
I believe NVI falls under a process called “Somewhat Actualised Theory Income of a Rehabilitative Economy”… or S.A.T.I.R.E, for short.

From next month (26 March), music fans are so excited that The Edge TV will be returning to its rightful home on Freeview channel 11 and a new channel, The Breeze TV, comes to Freeview channel 14 from April.

So much for the doom and gloom…

TVNZ profit jumps (RNZ), off the back of the Rugby World Cup, apparently.
Also has a warning about softening advertising from the Coronavirus… although I would have thought it would bring more eyeballs to screens as people are forced into quarantine, stay in bed ill, etc. Sounds like the sales teams need gee-ing up.

Mediaworks contnue to give NZME hosts publicity with The Cafe back this morning.

It looks like the production company of The Cafe purchases the 9-10am slot from Three and must then use that hour as they like. Mediaworks don’t offer advertising during this block.

Major power cut at Three lots of systems offline not sure when they are going to be back on air.

Edit back on air. To limited areas.

What is going on at MediaWorks? Is someone not paying bills? Better bring Paddy Gower back from the States to investigate it… because IT matters too.

Maintenance was being done on the generator and another power issue occurred taking the station off air.

So Dancing with the stars is/was due to start in a couple of months on Three. Do we think it’ll most likely be pushed back or they’ll keep going but without an audience as 10 are doing?

Mediaworks TV most likely doing it tough $$wise (well more so than usual) along with all the media companies so that can’t be in its favour for pushing on as planned

5 cases in NZ and relatively isolated. For now I think they can push on.

The Project is now without an audience.

Assumed Mediaworks couldn’t find a buyer for TV (with The Edge + The Breeze TV replacing Three Life) - new reports say Sky is, or was. Thoughts?

The Spinoff article: Crisis upon crisis: Covid-19 and the NZ media

The biggest concern has to be for Three, which was announced as being for sale in October of last year. As recently as last week there were industry rumours of an imminent transaction, yet that process has been made far more difficult by the events of the past week. “Any sale would need to be approved by a board,” said one TV executive, “and no one’s flying, so you couldn’t actually get people in a room to make a decision.” Even if they meet remotely, no major transactions seem likely with the world under this much stress.

Newsroom article: The Christchurch quake, 9/11 and GFC rolled into one

All this occurs as the news industry had already faced exceptional structural and financial challenges. Broadcaster MediaWorks has its Three television channel on the block, which is believed to have been being seriously eyed by Sky TV before this crisis became fully-fledged. Chances of such a sale being possible, with Sky’s shares falling as a result of its sports coverage reducing, and Three’s ad revenues bound to be negatively affected for the coming year, seem slim.

Very interesting.

I do wonder if coronavirus is actually going to work in Three’s favour. Considering that the network, and namely Newshub, is doing a superb job of covering this pandemic - did you see Jacinda Ardern being interviewed LIVE by Sam Hayes at 6pm? - I think the Government may end up throwing some cash at Three to keep it going during this time.

TV advertising is done quarterly so it should be okay until Q3 comes round, but in the meantime I think the Government can look at Three almost as if it is doing a public service. And as I say, that may help it during this time. It would be scary to lose the channel as the world is plagued by this pandemic.

Though I’d drop Tova O’Brien - we don’t need her opinions, just stick to the facts please and don’t over indulge. But that is just a personal opinion.

Hmmm I think to keep the peace the govt would have to give a handout to all the struggling media companies. Or at least sign off a NZME/Stuff merger at the same time!

If they run out of Shortland Street eps to screen I wonder if moving Seven Sharp to TVNZ2 could be an option?
