Probably because TVNZ is allegedly going to be running at a loss of $17 million
Over the next financial year & the government is ok with that.
& Mediaworks are not happy with the way the government can keep this TVNZ commercial propped up
Yess TVNZ 1 should be non commercial.
TVNZ 2 & Duke should be the only commercial channels TVNZ run
But realistically why does the government need to run commercial tv in 2019.
Surely no TVNZ channels should be commercial like ABC and BBC especially with commercial competitors, it gives it a distinct advantage.
Commercial networks that don’t like the fact they’ve been forced to merge/downsize in a devastated ad market yet TVNZ gets to live the best of both worlds.
I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but NZME, Newshub etc have had to adapt to multimedia environment by making reporters do more than one medium. It’s at least worth asking the question if there’s anything overlapping from MTS/TVNZ/RNZ that could go under one umbrella.
And they always have. All Commercial channels set up in NZ knowing TVNZ had this advantage. If the ad market is so tight they’re struggling now, they need to consolidate, not whinge and moan (i.e. don’t just sit there and lobby govt for change).
Most importantly, they need to give the viewing public something to watch - less channels, better content, thus more targetable audiences for advertisers that sales teams can use.
I don’t necessarily disagree but the difference between when the stations were set up and now is markedly different.
Some have tried and have been blocked by regulators, it’s definitely not a fair system in NZ. TVNZ should be commercial free, at least on 1, it benefits the viewers and the wider industry.
Interesting…
Government in broadcasting is bad? TVNZ is partially funded by them, and the ABC and BBC are publicly funded, are they bad? Public broadcasting is essential especially in small countries like Australia and NZ for diversity and industry.
Noticed this Sky Sport logo on Newshub last night… which doesn’t make sense to me.
I get that they sponsor the Breakers, but the logo isn’t part of any Sky Sport brand that I’ve seen, although the Sky logo is similar to Sky Sports logo (skysports.com).
So which Sky actually sponsors the team, or is SKY NZ about to tart up their logo, or have they altered it to suit the Breakers logo?
So confused, so terribly, terribly confused.
Sky TV sponsors the NZ Breakers so it might be a new logo on the way? The one in the press release (June 2019) is their current logo.

I suspect some sort of (further) rebrand is on the way.
CBEEBIES TO LAUNCH IN NEW ZEALAND
Sky and BBC Studios deal includes the launch of much loved British kids’ channel
Sky and BBC Studios today announced a deal that will, for the first time, see award-winning pre-school channel, CBeebies, available in New Zealand.
Joining an already impressive kids’ channel line-up on Sky, CBeebies is aimed at pre-schoolers aged six years and under and encourages children to learn through play offering a mix of new and classic titles to educate and entertain young audiences.
“Christmas is coming early for our youngest viewers this year with the addition of CBeebies to our family line up in November,” said Sky CEO Martin Stewart.
“With a range of fun, entertaining and trusted content from one of the world’s greatest producers focused on family, community and well-being, we know Kiwi kids will be inspired by this best of British children’s viewing,”
The Sky BBC Studios deal also includes extended carriage rights for BBC UKTV and BBC Earth, as well as a range of quality programming including scripted drama and factual series which will stream on Neon. In addition, there’s increased catch-up rights on Sky On Demand and on Sky Go as well as more box sets of favourite BBC series.
Jon Penn, Managing Director of BBC Studios Australia and New Zealand, said: “We’re delighted to extend and enhance our partnership with SKY, offering viewers a brand new channel for pre-school children, CBeebies, and many more shows available on demand. This deal enables SKY viewers of all ages to enjoy the best British shows – in the way that they want to.”
On CBeebies, young Kiwi viewers can look forward to discovering some great programmes available for the first time in New Zealand, including:
Hey Duggee , a critically acclaimed and multi award-winning animated series in which Duggee, a big lovable dog, runs the Squirrel club for pre-schoolers, which encourages children to have fun while discovering new things about the world around them.
Go Jetters , an action-packed geographical adventure show that follows the adventures of four plucky international heroes Xuli, Kyan, Lars and Foz, as they travel the world with their teacher, mentor and friend Ubercorn, a funky disco-grooving unicorn.
Sarah & Duck , the multiple award-winning, 2D animated, pre-school series, which follows the curious adventures of seven-year-old Sarah and her loud, quacky friend Duck, as they explore the world both near and far in unexpected ways.
Swashbuckle , packed to the gunnels with thrills, spills and heaps of energy, a team of daring young Swashbucklers take on the cheeky pirates Cook, Line and Captain Sinker, to win jewels for their treasure chest.
Catie’s Amazing Machines , CBeebies’ very own rally driver, Catie, is in the driving seat of some amazing machines as she introduces pre-school audiences to some of the biggest and fastest machines in the world.
CBeebies joins Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and Cartoon Network in Sky’s family line up from November 2019.
CBeebies is the latest BBC Studios channel to be available on Sky in New Zealand, the full line up including BBC UKTV, BBC Earth and BBC World News.
In addition, from January 1 Sky is taking up the naming rights for the Wellington arena currently known as Westpac Stadium.
As taken from the Facebook post above
“‘As part of presenting a fresh, vibrant face to our brand we’re ditching the downward pointing arrow. We’re about growth and there’s a vital energy infecting every corner of Sky. We’re also ditching CAPS – they’re shouty, and we’re about listening. You’ll start seeing the new Sky look from early September.’ Steve Bayliss, Chief Marketing Officer”
Love it,
… 'cos it’s so 1990!
Not sure about the replacement though, but the new CEO is definitely putting his stamp on things. At least it’s not a complete monstrosity like another TV logo I can think of… oh, and that other one.
I wonder how long before Prime sees some treatment.
I think Prime relaunch is also part of this Q rebranding exercise. New logo, set, and on-air presentation and graphics, network ID.
Prime needs to change its name 5 would be great
With a lot of better rating content , mass promotion it could one day be the top free to air channel.
Prime is basically a sleeping giant
Stewart talked of using Prime and the new Sky Sports Now app as a way to “nurture” existing audiences and encourage “future” customers. The best way to do that is give them free stuff.
If this is the vision of Prime - I reckon they should relaunch with Sky in the name.
Full credit to Martin though, haven’t seen a new CEO of a media company make so much change in such a short time since… Mark Weldon?
The old logo is better though imo.
