Also planning on moving the Te Reo channel to online-only. It’s been a bleak year for NZ TV as a whole.

Repealing advertising restrictions for media

Legislation that will repeal all advertising restrictions for broadcasters on Sundays and public holidays has been introduced to Parliament today, Media Minister Paul Goldsmith says.
“Traditional media outlets are operating in an extremely difficult environment and as the Government we must ensure regulatory settings are enabling the best chance of success.
“This change could generate approximately $6 million for the industry and any lost opportunities for revenue are significant in the current tight financial context.
“These restrictions are no longer aligned with the ways in which audiences consume content. As technology and audiences continue to move away from traditional linear broadcasting, the restrictions are increasingly redundant.
“This will level the playing field by ensuring local media companies are not disadvantaged by restricted advertising times that don’t apply to digital streaming platforms.
“The New Zealand media sector has been calling for this change for a long time, and this Government is listening.

Bad idea. I quite like having my Christmas Day and Good Friday broadcasting unfouled by advertising.

Yes. For about five decades, so indeed… long overdue.

So it looks like… advertising will be on like Sunday morning (6am-midday), and public holidays like Christmas Day and Good Friday im hearing?

Does this mean Breakfast will air on Sundays as well? There’s no excuse not to imo.

It doesn’t air on Saturday so don’t see it airing on Sunday. They seem to be struggling to have a strong show even on weekdays nowadays. Advertising seems to be dwindling even more, the addition of the Sunday time slot won’t magically fix it but will make it uniform across the full week.

A lot of countries don’t bother with weekend breakfast shows. I think America and Australia are the outliers. Even Good Morning Britain only runs Monday-Friday. And the UK has ~13x the population of NZ!

Yeah as @utaussiefan pointed out, you can air ads on Saturday though and it barely lasted 18 months there. If they can’t even sustain a midday or late bulletin, I can’t see them rolling out a Sunday breakfast show when viewership would be incredibly low.

Im guessing you have shares in the advertising industry, which is the reason you want to force ads of TV viewers on Xmas day. You have every single other day of the year to advertise. Just please, let us have our commercial free Christmas day

I can’t see there being a huge advertising market for some of those time zones or days (esp. Sunday morning and Xmas day) , but it’s been quite bizarre that Stuff, NZME, Facebook etc can advertise on Xmas Day and those other times but not TV/radio.
