On the Bravo thing - not a huge surprise. Aren’t the most recent seasons available on Hayu and Bravo is essentially a rerun channel.
…and I guess they have lots of Discovery content they can fill another channel with
WBD is also rumored to be interested in acquiring CBS-related assets if Paramount decides to sell.
The Government is preparing to progress a list of action points to support the New Zealand media industry, including a special move to help save New Zealand’s longest-running soap, Shortland Street.
Cabinet will shortly meet to consider a range of recommendations, including progressing the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill through Parliament.
It is also likely to agree to specific actions, including allowing Shortland Street to be eligible for the 40% domestic screen production rebate and to lift the ban on Sunday morning TV advertising.
So they’ll try to save that, but not Fair Go, which probably has contributed more to NZ society than any soap ever has!
Should have happened when the Broadcasting Fee was abolished.
I’m sorry, but there should at least be one time when we are not bombarded with adverts. I get advertising forced in my face bascially 24-7 and surely there should be a time where we watch content without any adverts.
There is - it’s called Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and also ANZAC Day before noon.
WBD will be thrilled, they won’t have to schedule programmes for the whole 6 hours on a Sunday across their channels anymore, more infomercials.
Exactly this, wall to wall infomercials. For me the Sunday morning ban should only be lifted if they are going to commit to Sunday morning breakfast shows, if not then the ban should be left as it is.
Trying to watch the warriors on sky sport.
Can someone who knows anyone at Sky please tell them to stop using a stacked version of their logos for watermarks? It’s an absolute mess.
Why can’t they just do a stripped version with “live” centred underneath? I’m probably the only one with an issue, but it has forever irritated me.
Well Sunday morning should be ad free. TV has gone down the tube enough over the past 35 years. As, reality TV shows, no historical docos. Nothing
Currently, the Broadcasting Act 1989 restricts television networks from showing commercial advertising from 6am to noon on Sundays as well as on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Anzac Day (6am to noon only). However, this rule does not apply to online media.
In 2015 the then National Government, led by (Sir) John Key as Prime Minister, contemplated lifting the Sunday morning and public holiday bans on television and radio advertising. Amy Adams, Broadcasting Minister at the time, aimed to align the regulations for traditional and new media.
By 2016 the Government concluded that television advertising should be permitted during certain Sunday morning ‘special events’. This proposal served as a middle ground amidst the differing opinions of television networks and church groups.
Imagine giving a shit what church groups have to say about private enterprise.
Will lifting the ban make that much difference? I mean who’s really watching TV on a Sunday morning?
Precisely. Also people of a religious bent have three Christian channels, FTA, nationwide, to watch, 24/7.
Just out of interest, I wonder how many countries in the world have state-sponsored non-commercial TV (from grown-up countries that don’t have nasty regiemes)?
Seems to be a token gesture to the industry which won’t do much but seemingly will piss off viewers.
From July 6th, there will be some programming changes across Three and Sky Open as Newshub winds down their produced bulletins (AM, 6pm and News First). Here’s what they’ll be replacing:
Three:
Saturday July 6:
6pm: ThreeNews (debut, produced by Stuff)
6:30pm: Bondi Rescue
7pm: LEGO Masters Australia
Sunday July 7:
6pm: ThreeNews
6:30pm: Davis Lomas Investigates
7:30pm: Love It Or List It Australia
Monday July 8:
AM (6am-9am) will be replaced by Good Bones, Home Town and Spring Baking Championship from Monday-Friday.
As mentioned earlier, ThreeNews will have 1 hour weekday bulletins, 30 minutes on Saturday and Sunday.
Sky Open:
News First at 5:30pm will be replaced with:
Saturdays: Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives
Sundays: Rugby Nation (formerly lead in to News First)
Mondays to Fridays: Pawn Stars
Interesting that Lego Masters Australia air on Saturday nights when audiences are lower.
Depends how you define ‘state-sponsored’… obviously there is the BBC, but that’s funded by a licence fee. Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland all have ad-free public broadcasters funded through various taxes, much like the ABC. So do Flanders and Spain (though both their public networks allow programme sponsorships). Can’t think of anywhere else off the top of my head.
Wimbledon 2024 is set to start tonight (1 July) at 10pm, but the nightly coverage will be exclusively available via live streaming on TVNZ+ rather than traditional television.
Initially, TVNZ had asserted that it would provide live coverage of the world’s biggest tennis tournament every night on both TVNZ DUKE and TVNZ+.
However, upon checking the TV listings, I discovered no mention of Wimbledon coverage on TVNZ DUKE; this is primarily because there is no television coverage apart from the finals, which will be shown on both TVNZ+ and TVNZ 1. TVNZ DUKE’s regular programming, such as the Monday and Tuesday movies, will still screen as scheduled.
This prompts the question: Why can’t Kiwis enjoy television coverage of the oldest tennis tournament this year?
