New Zealand TV

was hoping for new 7pm show

My observation is that the NZ media are very conservative and defensive about their empire.

Probably a better way of putting it than I ever will. Thank you

Shhhh
you’re not allowed to say that! You’ll upset the status quo lovers.

Still don’t understand why Ardern’s government didn’t just make TV1 ad-free. Would have solved a whole host of problems AND been easier/quicker/cheaper than a full-on merger with RNZ. Even MediaWorks pushed for it (obviously for self-interest rather than any altruism, but hey! Stopped clock and all the rest of it
)

Introducing ads 24/7 to TV One was a big mistake because that channel had the best educational content on NZ TV for the 1980s and back in 1986 Ian Cross promised for a ad free TV1, where high quality and educational programmes persist, but that it was not to be. Instead they have reality garbage and sensationalism programming and succeeding ad friendly programming that is wrong for me, making me think that merger should’ve gone ahead.

This isn’t the case. There are still no commercials shown between 6am and 12pm on Sunday Mornings, on all FTA channels.

TBH, I’m nit-picking here, but these discussions are getting about as cyclical as the Daylight Savings thread. The RNZ-TVNZ merger is dead. There’s no political appetite for this to happen. It’s time to move on.

@Sheldon_Betteridge @TV4 Under the Broadcasting Act 1989, commercial advertising on New Zealand television is prohibited from airing between 6am and noon on Sundays and Anzac Day, and all day Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day (from midnight until 11.59pm).

The Shopping Channel, which is available as a subscription channel on Sky, airs German documentaries (in English) as it is illegal to air infomercials from TV Shop during these times
unless paid religious programming and evangelism fill their slots.

In 2009 TV3 (now Three) was found guilty of violating the Act by running advertisements on Sunday mornings during the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

It was in 1989 that TV One shows ads nearly 24/7 as I forgot to mention non-commercial Sunday morning.

Sounds rather archaic that no advertising on Sunday morning rule. As far as I am aware, Australia has never had any such restrictions.

NZ still thinks its the UK in the 70s

Yeah it’s ridiculous - but it doesn’t seem like the TV industry lobby too hard to get it changed either.

Maybe if TVNZ ever jumps onboard the FAST bandwagon it could introduce some quality public broadcasting online only and launch a news/current affairs FAST channel with help from RNZ. Wishful thinking I know but one can only hope.

That is a good suggestion Leo that New high quality News and Current affairs is online to compete with RNZ

If anything it saves us from even slacker programming from the networks because they have to screen actual shows. Looking at the Saturday schedules, TVNZ1 plays a religious programme and an hour of infomercials in the morning, Three is even worse as it is 3 and a half hours of the stuff and Bravo runs infomercials from 6-10am.

Personally I like the idea of being having at least sometime during the week where I am not bombarded with advertising or commercials.

I think also there’s just no point in having the ban repealed, as the audience is too small at that time on a Sunday.

Kinda annoyed there seems to be no difference to the actual video player (Still no seeking less than 30 seconds? Really?) but the rest of the app is much smoother and a lot easier to navigate. Hopefully we get those new FAST channels soon.

Looks awesome!

MasterChef Australia spinoff Dessert Masters premieres on TVNZ 2 on Monday, December 4 at 7.30pm, continuing on Tuesday and Wednesday at the same time. Melissa Leong and Swiss-French chocolatier Amaury Guichon are the judges.

There are only ten episodes in the first season. The show was renewed by 10 for a second season next year with Melissa and Amaury returning as judges. Melissa had also quit as a judge on the main MasterChef Australia.
