New Zealand TV

Not from New Zealand so pardon my ignorance… is The AM Show your version of F-Boy Island?

The AM Show is our version of Today/Sunrise

Quality of this NZ TV has an all time low, TVNZ 1 should turn into NZ version of ABC TV Australia have no ads and quality doco and dramas and they should relaunch TVNZ 7 channel. In the 2005 election campaign Don Brash wanted to sell off TV2 to a private company.

Extremely right wing though. Ryan Bridge might as well be Tucker Carlson. Trying to be “one of the good gays”.

I’m very interested in how this will all pan out. I remember years back (fairly early on in Ardern’s first term), Mediaworks (back when they still owned TV3) tried to push for the de-commercialisation of TV1. Now that the merger with RNZ has been cancelled, I wonder if something like this is Willie Jackson’s preferred outcome?

That’s what viewers want

Not this viewer. Sometimes viewers shouldn’t get what they want. We had way more public service content on our TV channels from 1975 to 1989, and then from 2003 to 2010 and it’s because TVNZ and it’s predecessors were required to screen public service content, ie current affairs and historical docos.

But what you want is irrelevant- it’s what the masses want that matters.

Free Tv is programmed for the masses.

If you want niche content for you - there has never been more ways to seek out diverse niche content that appeals to you. With YouTube streaming internet - it’s never been better

Still no excuse to have wall to wall MasterChef on TVNZ. Just cheffing shows on continuous loop.

I don’t know how wrong you like being but does this look like cheffing shows on continuous loop?

I guess the question is whether TVNZ these days is the place to put it, given the merger got called off and the non-commercial idea for TVNZ died off decades ago.

If you want non-commercial in a split public media, you’d almost have to put it in RNZ’s remit, and one wonders whether popping a cheap TV simulcast of RNZ National’s big shows on Freeview (Morning Report/Nine to Noon/Checkpoint at least, I guess) would satisfy that for less, than giving the responsibility to TVNZ. (This is sorta mitigated by the fact that National is on FM and probably audio-only on Freeview already over there, but it’d bring eyeballs I guess.)

And let’s face it, pulling off the advertiser-friendly shows on TV One is hardly going to put them in a spot to invest anything in public service TV - and of course, like the funding for TVNZ 7, that’s very much dependent on the whims of the govt of the time, and I suspect would be withdrawn at the first possible moment. :man_shrugging:

Viewers are stupid. Good to see it;s not just an Aussie thing.

TV One should have be non commercialised 37 years ago and sell off TV2 to a private company, so that I wish that TV2 would compete against TV3 in advertiser friendly shows

Correct. Checkpoint is broadcast with pictures, although it’s pretty basic fixed-camera stuff, otherwise it’s all audio only with a datacast slide that scrolls through the headlines.

That’s not the best example tbh… okay it may not be ‘cheffing shows’ but every single show on that grid is an import.

Sounds a bit like Clare Curran’s aborted RNZ+ plan.

Spark Sport is closing on 30th June 2023. The site’s content is currently free until it closes. Once it closes the following content moves free to air to TVNZ.

  • Diamond League athletics
  • England & Wales cricket - The Ashes :eyes:
  • FIBA basketball
  • Ladies European Tour golf
  • Manu Samoa rugby
  • Netball Australia
  • United Rugby Championship
  • World Rally Championship
  • WTA tennis
  • US Open tennis
  • Women’s Super League
  • MotoGP

A notable omission from the list is FIH Hockey and UEFA rights. Spark had the rights to the Champions League, Europa League and Euro 2024.

Mind you, the page you linked to has this on the bottom:

Keep an eye on upcoming updates on TVNZ channels or this page for further content news.

As such, discussions might still be occurring regarding the FIH and UEFA rights (which also include Euro 2028).

FIH rated dismally for TVNZ when they had it on a content share before Spark properly launched, so not sure they’d want it and Sky are partners of Hockey NZ for non-World League games so I suspect it’ll go to Sky.

UEFA will be an interesting one. Not sure TVNZ has much use for Europa League and Conference League but it would probably like the UCL and Euros.

LOL. I bet you anything that the coverage would be saturated with ads rending it completely unwatchable. TVNZ are hopeless at sporting coverage now. The only thing that are good at is ads and reality TV.

wonder if they will launch something like Stan Sport
