New Zealand TV

Australia has Five Primary Free-to-air compared to New Zealand’s Three, Does’nt TVNZ 1 & 2 count as Primary Channels?

New Zealand has five - depending on your POV.

The frequencies for Rush and a plus one channel for Gusto were previously assigned to Edge TV and Breeze TV. It was never likely that MediaWorks would be able to hold onto these channels for its radio brands after selling its TV arm to Discovery.

Looks like I’m headed back to YouTube for music videos now that Breeze is going. Devastated.

Is this fact or speculation though? I read the article and found it hard to tell.

It assumes they keep on with all the plus 1 channels. If they kept +HR=E+1 only and ditched the rest, they’d still have room for the music channels. How well do the plus 1’s rate these days?

I suspect that the music channels will not stick around in the long term as they are run by Mediaworks and the very rare advertising that is seen on both music channels will not bring in enough money to make the channels viable. The Edge is also in HD and I’m guessing that they’ll want to make Gusto HD instead, so Edge will either go back to SD or just disappear.

With that being said, maybe Discovery might want to keep the channels and rebrand them to seperate them from Mediaworks’ radio brands. If they do, I hope they put in more effort than what Mediaworks currently does.

The last New Zealand Music awards broadcast on TVNZ was 2002

Wow, that’s big. The music awards have become quite an institution for Three.

Probably lost the contract when Discovery bought TV3. I see Mediaworks is still a media partner with its radio/outdoor brands.

Expect to see NZME (ZM/TheHits/ Flava etc.) talent used at the awards this time round with NZME people usually appearing on TVNZ shows. Though I see The Edge sponsoring one of the awards.
