New Zealand Radio

The big audio companies will still run things by and large as they can place ads around or put it in their advertising ecosystem. There’ll be some disrupters that can do it themselves but tough nut to monetise it in NZ solo.

Gives an insight into MediaWorks’ podcast numbers.

Yeah good example is The Morning Shift (Jordan, Brook and Marc ex-Mai Fm) - it’s near if not #1 on Spotify most days - but I don’t think i’ve heard any advertising…

Yep - good show that. It’s almost like getting numbers is the easy bit. Selling is a whole other thing on top of it and that is not an easy thing.

I always enjoy looking at the Podcast Ranker each month… MW has A LOT of catching up to do if they’re to compete in the podcast space. Only 2 podcasts in the top 20 in April - and none in the top 10!

Independent publisher Brodie Kane does quite well too.

NewstalkZB/Gold Sport to broadcast Rugby World Cup.

SENZ also have rights.

Looks like the audio commentary rights to this year’s Rugby World Cup are shared by NZME (Newstalk ZB, Gold Sport and the Alternative Commentary Collective [ACC]) and SENZ, but the All Blacks’ games will be covered by NZME’s radio and digital platforms (including iHeartRadio).

Correct me if I’m wrong.

I believe they are non-exclusive commentary rights, correct. Both networks will be doing ABs games.

Thanks for correcting me, @OnAir.

…Brodie Kane…

I thought she was on Classic Hits? (Or she used to be, anyway).

Not since before pre Covid. Her and Dave Fitzgerald’s show got canned.

Jono and Ben can now be heard on The Hits in most markets nationwide.

Dave Fitzgerald, or Fitzy as he’s also known, now co-hosts The Breeze’s local breakfast show for Christchurch with Hilary Muir, while Brodie Kane specialises in making a series of original podcasts as an independent publisher.

More trouble for rnz in the wake of news reporting?? How did this go under the radar for so long

No one really looks at their news site and especially not for international reporting.

Also no one is going through and comparing the wire copy and RNZ version to see for any changes.

That’s a pity, because honestly I can’t stand those two. Just my opinion, but I don’t think they’re even half as funny as they think they are. Not saying I could do better - but there must have been actual radio people they could find to do that slot, surely? Just because they were funny on TV (apparently) doesn’t mean that it will translate to radio as well.

Ben started out as an ad copywriter for TRN and did on air with Radio Sport and The Rock for a few years before and then alongside Pulp Sport and other TV.

Jono was at The Rock for years before switching to TV.

Ah I see, didn’t know that - I hardly ever listen to The Rock, and never listened to Radio Sport, so that would explain why I had thought they were on TV only.

That’s a bit much… it’s nice to see TV3’s cast-offs being given a chance, rather the endless TVNZ cast-offs… :imp: Seriously, at least J+B have talent. That’s more than can be said for some others on the radio (your mileage might vary).

Indeed…sorry, I just don’t find them funny at all (I know a few people who feel the same way).

Query, weren’t they once Bill and Ben? Or am I thinking of someone different?
