New Zealand Radio

According to nzh there may be a case for staff at today to take personal grievence case due to lack of consultation around sudden loss of employment

Wouldn’t surprise me - but may not be worth the effort and rigmarole to go through employment court etc . Hopefully they do get good payouts.

Another good piece here - some details repeated but some new. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/inside-the-fall-of-today-fm-why-mediaworks-really-walked-away-from-tova-obrien-duncan-garner-and-their-radio-colleagues/JTSLKWBAAJF3FNESH6JTCZDZFQ/

Here is how the news is sounding this morning

This is how REX Today sounded like on a Friday, day after Today FM’s closure but still has their usual VOs.

So REX is still going… maybe that will end up on Magic, kinda like NZME are doing with Gold Sport (The Country/ Jamie Mackay)

Hrm. Does that mean Magic will now carry REX (Rural Exchange) and REX Today and be extended to areas where Magic is not available via FM radio?

Just guessing Pad

Really unfortunate.

Forgot that Gary McCormick had switched over to Today, probably quite annoyed with how things have turned out for him.

There’s probably no need to speculate given the Mediaworks have indicated the ‘new’ will happen in April - so worst case you may have to wait 30 days to find out!

Uhh what is this site good for if not speculating on things? lol

MediaWorks says it ‘misphrased’ statement about new radio station

It’s pretty clear Mediaworks will use this to spread its current brands. A chance to take the Breeze (to the north) and Mai and George to other areas. In Auckland maybe an 80’s jukebox or returning the Rock and Humm to their old frequency.

Would make sense to move The Rock back to 90.2 in Auck.

And George FM/The Breeze/Mai FM etc. can use the former frequencies to expand their audience.

As we suspected and I think @nztv is right - REX probably off to Magic. No new brand.

As an aside, ‘Black Caps Radio’ is continuing today - I am pretty sure the cricket contract is up at the end of this season. SENZ or Gold Sport? Doubt MWorks would want it again.

Blackcaps coverage ended around 8:14pm. Went straight to the 8pm news with the jingle. No weather mentioned but still had the weather jingle in there. Then straight to music.

Different story on the AM frequencies. When the delayed news bulletin finished 1233 Wellington has become The Breeze as is 738 Christchurch. 702 Auckland is simulcasting Humm FM.

98.9 FM Wellington is still the continuous music programme

Would love to see George FM expand with frequencies up for grabs due to Today FM’s closing.

George FM used to broadcast on 104.2FM in Manawatu and 104.5FM in Wellington before Magic took over. When Magic moves across, it is intended that George would return to their old frequencies.
