New Zealand Radio

@OnAir It’s up to MediaWorks as Today FM broadcasts on FM frequencies throughout the country (as the name suggests).

It is intended that, when Humm FM moves to 104.2FM next year, Today FM will broadcast to Auckland on 106.2FM (rather than 702AM) and that Magic will remain on 100.6FM. However, I just don’t know.

Will they use the unused Kiwi FM frequencies for this station or is this online only?

@Leotv Online only.

They’re not MW’s to use, they’re still under Crown management. MW leased them at the time.

I’d imagine they’d put Today FM on this frequency in Auckland, closer to ZB & YA

@TV4 Does that mean Magic will move to 106.2FM in Auckland? As I said before, MediaWorks has recently acquired 106.2 Humm FM which, next year, will move to 104.2FM.

Paul Henry and Mark Dye joining Today FM lineup, partners with RNZ

MediaWorks is excited to have Mark Dye join Tova O’Brien at breakfast on Today FM.
The CEO of medicinal cannabis company NUBU Pharmaceuticals, television presenter and
former Newstalk ZB host will co-host Tova from 6:30am-9am every weekday.

Mark Dye says, “I’m thrilled to be alongside Tova and to be part of Today FM. The time is right
for a station like Today, we all need a little less divisiveness and a bit more optimism.”

Well-known broadcaster Paul Henry will also be part of Today FM as its foundation station
voice. He says, “I’ve been lucky enough to be across some of the planning behind Today FM
and knew early on I wanted to be part of it. I’m delighted to lend my voice to such a positive
new station - I know Today FM is going to be fresh, interesting and, like me, highly
entertaining.”

In addition, MediaWorks has partnered with Radio New Zealand which will provide a news
wire to Today FM and other MediaWorks stations. The news wire will support the newsroom
MediaWorks is establishing.

MediaWorks Director of News & Talk Dallas Gurney says it’s fantastic to have Mark Dye join
Tova O’Brien to shakeup breakfast radio.

“Mark has a huge passion for news. He and Tova will be a terrific duo covering all the latest
happenings and angles in a unique and different way. We’re also excited Paul has wanted to
be part of our journey - having someone of his experience and mana within our team will be
invaluable.”

Today FM will launch in the first quarter of 2022.

Lmao.

Looking at all the tweets and stuff articles racing to post…he’s the station voice. That seems about the extent of his role??

I would imagine Paul will be the fill-in for Tova.

@TV4 In Auckland, Newstalk ZB broadcasts on 89.4FM and RNZ National (YA) can be found on 101.4FM. These are in addition to their original AM frequencies (i.e. 756AM for RNZ National and 1080AM for Newstalk ZB).

I didn’t realise ZB was so low on the dial in Auckland (I suppose it gets those Japanese-import driving nutter demographic), but at least Today will be in a better position to nab listeners off RNZ National, should MW put it in the right place.

I guess time will tell.

I suspect Today FM will be closer to ZB on the dial and another MW station will relocate.

Yeah despite not listening to a lot of talkback back then I still remember the negative feedback when he was on with Kerre.

How will the news wire work - same as what Newshub were providing to MW?

A bit differently to Newshub as Newshub has been composing the bulletins and using only their own resources, whereas RNZ will just be a feed of news stories they’ve already generated for their own bulletins and MW will be able to access this feed, much like how NZ Herald, Stuff and Newshub use RNZ digital stories to supplement their own websites. I assume.

That’s my bet too. There’s no way that MediaWorks will want Today FM right at the top of the dial where few people will stumble across it. I think it’s more likely that they’ll bump another brand (The Rock, perhaps?) up to 106.2, then launch Today FM on a frequency nearer to ZB (ie 90.2). These kinds of frequency shuffles have taken place in a number of other markets in recent years.

@anon36025973 This week MediaWorks announced that it had acquired 106.2 Humm FM and its frequency.

Humm FM, the bilingual station, was first launched in 2011 and broadcasts throughout Auckland offering listeners all the latest Bollywood hits as well as current and classic Indian music.

Next year Humm FM will relocate to MediaWorks’ own headquarters and change frequencies from 106.2FM to its new home on 104.2FM, according to a press release.

The Rock has been broadcasting on 90.2FM since it came to Auckland in 1999. Before then, Radio Pacific was broadcast on both AM (702AM) and FM (90.2FM) from 1994.

@Michael_Eccles That’s Adam Percival - who has worked in the television business for 10 years. Adam used to work “What Now”, “The 4:30 Show” and “The Adam & Eve Show”.

Yeah The Rock or The Sound sounds like the possible frequencies. MW only have Mai FM in the sub 90s FM range and that station rates pretty well.

Good get. Very talented broadcaster - do wonder the full story with Matt though.

@OnAir Matt Gibb - well known from his “Squirt” and “Studio 2” days - has over 20 years’ experience in the television industry. He had joined More FM’s Breakfast Club as co-host earlier this year, but left after only a few weeks.

The reason why Matt left More FM early is due to the fact that he is more interested in television than radio. As always, I wish Matt would host the all new version of the game show “Wheel of Fortune” with Diamond Langi (Miss Universe New Zealand 2019) as co-host.
