New Zealand Radio

The Today FM bulletins were fairly short and sweet for a talk station as well.

Sounds like cutting down on resources

Just tuned into the The Sound news at 2pm and I see what you mean @Rod_Van_Alphen.
It’s maybe a little more punchy than their bulletin for The Breeze, More etc.

vo: “This is Sound News Brief”. Hi I’m Geoff. Well that was embarrassing. The Black Caps beaten by 172 runs by the Aussies in the first cricket test at the Basin Reserve. Remember we didn’t pick a specialist spinner. Nathan Lyon took 10 wickets for the Aussies. One person is reported to have died following a workplace incident in Mount Wellington this morning. The death is not being treated as suspicious. WorkSafe has been notified. And heading into a new week, MetService is forecasting widespread severe weather for parts of the country as an intense trough of low pressure closes in from the west. In sport, other than the cricket the All Blacks Sevens lost 28-19 to the USA this afternoon at the world series event in LA finishing third in their group. And the Black Fern Sevens play Fiji in just on 20 minutes.

Their bulletin across other stations starts with “Good afternoon to you I’m Geoff Bryan with the latest at 2” leading with

  • Labour MP Peeni Henare admitting on Q+A this morning there were significant challenges in getting the Maori Health Authority to perform
  • Workplace incident in Mount Wellington
  • South Island motorists warned of delays on SH1 as power lines are replaced
  • Russia and Ukraine have traded drone attacks on apartment buildings in major cities
  • In sport, well that was embarrassing (Black Caps)
  • All Blacks Sevens
  • Black Fern Sevens
  • And the new NRL season, that kicks off at 3:30 this afternoon

Reminds me of the recent ZM campaign in the arcade or wherever it was. Nice to see some outdoor shots replace the plain studio shots though.

I’m not sure this is the right place, anyone who listens to magic on rova having issues accessing the local streams?. I haven’t been able to access them for months, it’s stuck on the digital stream. I’m gonna call them about it tomorrow. I’ve tried both text and email with no reply

From the evidence, it seems that MediaWorks has replaced the local streams for each of its radio brands (such as The Edge, Mai, George FM, The Rock, The Sound and Magic) with a ‘digital stream’ that offers nationwide coverage, national advertising and national weather forecasts, resulting in the absence of regional variations. These digital streams are accessible online and on the rova app.

It is also noted that More FM and The Breeze’s local streams have been replaced by a single national stream when listening live online or on rova, i.e. a digital stream, so you may need to switch to FM radio and tune in to your local frequency for either More FM or The Breeze, although the information may be incorrect at the time of writing!

On rova you used to be able to go to settings and manually enter your location ie Canterbury
Not a big issue for me
As most of the stations are network anyway
I know i heart seems to default to auckland regardless

I noticed this too when streaming Magic the other night - was expecting the traffic for Auckland but didn’t hear anything, just a generic self-promotional commercial.
Reached out to Mediaworks to ask what’s going on as I found the traffic update quite useful, but never heard anything back. This was streaming through TuneIn as I had been previously.

Yeah they removed all local streams late last year - around October I think and replaced it with their ‘Digital Radio’ thing where it gives personalised ads. There isn’t even an option to select region on the stations website players anymore.

It was bloody annoying when I was living in Welly as my station of choice - George is only on LPFM there and there’s no traffic info on Rova.

I have done some investigating and found the streams for Auckland here:
Magic: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/magic-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
George: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/george-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
Mai: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/mai-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
More FM: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/more-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
The Breeze: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/breeze-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
The Sound: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/sound-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
The Edge: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/edge-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
channelX: https://digitalstreams4.mediaworks.nz/chx-AKL-high/playlist.m3u8
It doesn’t appear any other regions have a stream.
To play download VLC on your computer and phone and select “play network stream” and insert a URL.

bro. I can’t believe mediaworks would actually pull something like this, no wonder their company is struggling.

Mediaworks has pulled out of the Triton Podcast Ranker and as a result Triton has decided to stop the ranker in New Zealand, as NZME was the only other company using it.

Disappointing move as now we can only rely on what the media companies tell us about their podcast ratings.

Not surprised since Mediaworks’ podcasts were ranking very poorly compared to NZME’s.

That’s a shame. It was always interesting to see just how much in digital NZME dwarfs Mediaworks.
TBH, I wondered whether somehow Mediaworks inflated their numbers for the George FM podcasts. They seemed very high for two shows that are never in Spotify’s top 100.
