I do find it odd all the talk about luring big names across with massive budgets. In the end, I don’t think viewers would move across just for the host (Sam). Even CBS itself started its morning show slow with 3 hosts who were not big names - Charle Rose (the biggest name, but not a ‘star’), Gayle and Norah (and an even lesser name originally with Erica Hill). So it makes no sense to me to blow the budget on ‘big names’ when they actually need to get the product right.
Who else thinks they’ll screw it up with big names and huge expenditure but, somehow, there will be that ‘something’ missing, and it just won’t feel right? Like the hosts won’t work at all together. Or it will feel fake. Or it won’t have that “start from something small”, organic feeling like the original Sunrise or Studio 10 had.
And they NEVER seem to learn from their mistakes. They were the ones who lured Bryant Gumbel from NBC to host their morning show, and that went nowhere. Same for Katie Couric hosting the Evening News.
By the way, I have no idea who the ideal partner for Sam is - Kochie excepted. James Mathison? Jk Matt White? Ray Martin (I’m half serious!)? Stan Grant? Terry Willesee? Or Jono Coleman?
There has been so much mainstream press coverage about CBS taking over Ten ’ “the #1 American network with deep pockets and decades of experience”. Not to mention the Lisa story was one of the biggest stories of the year. As Ten continues to make more positive changes, new shows, new sports, new talent, a possible logo and brand reset - and more and more mainstream press coverage - I think Ten will start to get a really positive glow about it. It has a halo effect. Once the energy and wind gets behind the new Ten - I think it will help feed itself and viewers will start coming over all across the schedule to see the new shows and product. Like when Seven started beating Nine - there was a new energy at 7 - you could feel it. view land new it - and they began checking out 7
Once the same happens to Ten in the next 18 months - a new breakfast show has a really good shot
They did. Discussion on the radio this morning that both Sam Armytage and Kochie are both negotiating their contracts at the moment which is what is probably fuelling rumours.
Stories in the media are often planted by managers and others close to personalities to push their value up.
Stories starting leaking when Pell’s contract was coming up - rumours that he was being poached by American networks. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a similar situation - agents putting fake news out there to push their price up. Would CBS really be interested in Armytage?
One or two high profile poaching from other networks, sure. As many have suggested, it would be a big mistake trying to launch a ‘big name’ splashy breakfast TV program. For what it is worth, I can see Ray Martin paired with a bubbly female - maybe Gretel Killeen - as a killer combination.
At the moment the network has an underdog status to its name.
Investment has to be in content - quality and diverse Australian drama, strategic placement of US content, new franchises, investment in news resources [and no by this I don’t mean a personality to simply read off the auto cue].
There are a lot of holes to plug with the loss of 20th Century Fox content. Not only that, with key content that is currently in place performing under-whelmingly.
I also think they need to focus on a cross platform strategy. The network will now have access to a massive back catalogue of CBS and Paramount content - not only for their multi-channels but perhaps even to compete with the likes of Stan and Netflix. With CBS in partnership with Warner for The CW, I don’t see why they can’t take advantage to develop a mutually beneficial content deal to replace the 20th Century Fox one.
I would like to see online branding pushed, and for the network to take streaming rights for any sport contracts they negotiate.
You can have:
www.ten-sport.com.au [powered by Vodafone] - with sports news articles, streaming (including classic games). Could potentially snap up co-rights with CBS overseas partnership for premium overseas sports currently screened on pay TV. Can also be either ‘pay per view’ or monthly cheap subscription. Free for telco partner clients.
www.ten-play.com.au - exclusive content, with premium content behind a pay wall. I would start cheap AUD5 a month.
I know this may sound harsh but that current programming executive needs to be given the boot. There are several people on here who would no doubt be willing to provide advice, that would lead to a better performing and more consistent schedule - and it would likely be free
This might be me being too cynical but I’m always skeptical when networks start doing that. Of course, there’s some truth behind such sentiments (particularly yesterday when Seven attached an amount to the cuts they want to make). However, since there’s some major rights that will be put to tender in the next 12 months (ie; cricket and the Australian Open) - I can’t help but think might be some strategy behind both Nine and Seven ‘underplaying’ how much they’re willing to pay for rights…
These guys are like a real version of Get Krackin, I’d like Ten to put this on. The show airs live on Facebook and Instagram, made by Oath (what was
AOL).
Well my other preferences in that case would be Steve Liebman, or Ron Wilson. Older gentlemen to add a little ‘gravitas’.
Though admittedly my first preference would be for Hamish McDonald. I mean he has a relaxed feel about him, and it doesn’t hurt that he is VERY easy on the eye
