Viewing on tvs has improved with apps on various devices like Apple TV and consoles, but it wasn’t as if there were no alternatives other than FTA or Foxtel. Don’t forget Quickflix and the humble video store.
The Project at 6:30pm has basically stagnated at 300-400k. I reckon if Neighbours was brought back to Ten at 6:30pm with a big promotion push it would rate 500k on day 1. 500k is definitely a win in younger demos and go from there.
Ten/CBS either goes the cheap route (Neighbours/Simpsons) or mega-expensive (news with star recruits) so it will be very interesting to see what they do in 2018. Doing nothing is not an option.
Moving “Neighbours” from 11 to Ten are not going to boost the programs ratings. Its there in existance already…if people want to watch it they will. 6pm is always known as “news time” so Ten will reintroduce a news bulletin either locally or nationally to bring eye balls to the channel which would be more than Family Fued which would be a bonus to then make people tune into the channel longer into the night.
Problem though is the longer time passes, the more people’s habits change… It only gets worse every year and once you lose someone it’s nigh on impossible to get them back regularly (i.e: outside “event” programs).
Have to admit now Seven and Nine have been running news at 5pm (recently removed with extensions of the 5.30 game shows), I’ve been toying with the idea of moving Ten’s bulletin into the 5.30-6.30 timeslot. There needs to be no cut off at 5.59/6pm.
WIN could even do that now with Family Feud at 5pm then condensed Project at 7pm.
Regardless of what Ten will do, Nine must be worried because of the campaign they have launched against Lisa Wilkinson and Ten re supposed conflict between Carrie and Lisa
It bombed because they gave up! It takes alot of time to develop. Also if it rates higher than Family Fued its a bonus. But as i said it would be good to attract more eyes to Ten for the rest of the night. What they have to do is 5pm a 30 minute bulletin then 5:30 Sports Tonight then 6pm News 30 minutes then the Project. 930pm or 10pm localy presented national/local 30 minute bulletin would be great too!
Wow a lot of heated discussion here before we get any substantial indication of what direction CBS wants to take. Unless they hit the ground running, I’d say CBS would be aiming at business as usual until 2019 at this late stage.
I think that between 5pm - 7.30pm Ten really have not much to lose to try something different - 10 News is consistently 3rd in the 5pm/5.30pm timeslot and from 6pm to 7.30pm they are coming 3rd or 4th so the worst thing that could happen moving things around is coming 3rd or 4th in the same timeslots . .
@ the same time I think that commercial TV is generally very weak atm, so Ten have a great opportunity to come in and lead the way.
Going down the news path at 6pm is doing the same thing they’ve done in the past and expecting a different results. News viewers aren’t going to change channels. Watching the news is ingrained into those who watch it and they don’t channel surf between 7,9,10,ABC during the time the news is on.
I don’t know what their 6pm solution is, but I don’t think it is news.
As much as I would like to agree with you, i am not so sure. It depends on what they do at 6:30pm as to whether or not it will succeed. The other two channels screen a 1 hour news service, so a 6pm bulletin would need to be half hour to have any chance of success. Family Feud could very well become a daytime staple, as has The Price Is Right and Lets Make A Deal are on CBS in the US.
If you have a quality host backed by quality journalism, I dare say you have a chance
Apart from FF I think they would be loath to change much in that timeframe given that the 5pm news and The Project are well established, are at least consistent and align well to the Ten brand. Dramatic changes to those can upset that consistency and they’ll be worse off.
I don’t envisage any dramatic change to that lineup in any near future.
