Liberty A-League Grand Final.

Live And Exclusive On 10 Bold, 10 Play And Paramount+.

It’s been a year of breaking records for the Liberty A-League Women’s. Record crowds (the most attended season of any women’s sport in Australia ever), record memberships and record TV viewers, but it all comes down to this…

The Liberty A-League Women’s season comes to an exciting conclusion as heavyweights Melbourne City and Sydney FC battle it out in the grand final live from 3.30pm AEST on 10 Bold, 10 Play and Paramount+.

Both teams have won four ALW championships in their history – but who will edge ahead to become Australia’s most successful women’s team?

In their two meetings this season, it is Dario Vidosic’s Melbourne side that holds the advantage after coming out on top 3-2 in Sydney back in November, while the second clash ended goalless.

The odds may be stacked in Sydney’s favour as they gear up for their seventh consecutive Grand Final, but they will be coming up against an incredibly determined City side who will be targeting their first title since 2020.

The best football commentary team in the business will bring viewers a special pre-match show with all the analysis and news to preview the big match.

Tara Rushton, former Matildas player Grace Gill and Elise Kellond-Knight will break down all the action, while Teo Pellizzeri will call the Grand Final alongside Niav Owens on the sideline.

In a landmark year for women’s football in Australia, who will triumph over the rest to be crowned champion of the Liberty A-League for 2024?

Would be nice to see 10 (and other media like print, radio etc) hype up the A-League Women’s Grand Final more - given that this is the first grand final after last years successful Matildas campaign. But sadly, it’s not the case.

All I see from 10 is Top Gear Australia and Cheap Seats ads. Not much else.

Was there any difference in the 45 minute pre-match segment today compare to the one-hour version?

Tara and other co-hosts were set up on the field from what I saw at half time. Assuming it was the same set up at the beginning.

edit: There were awards given to the players at the ground during the half time break. Was this shown during the half time break? I only tuned in towards the end of half time, so i didn’t get to see it

Rough on Central Coast who won’t return to Australia until mid week

I for one hope 10 can get a deal done for the Matildas and Socceroos.

The A-League TV deal isn’t that bad at all really on 10 & Paramount+. Would the others do a better job, probably not.

Only station which can give the game full exposure to the game.

7 and 9 has cricket and tennis commitments in summer and footy in winter months and would have to put the football on their secondary channel

Ten were already putting the majority on multichannels and only taking the internationals on the main channel.

The reality is that the A-League (both Mens and Womens) isn’t popular enough to get a FTA audience that justifies main channel coverage. They need to work out whether they want to continue to chase a FTA partner or look at alternate means to get free-to-view content out there.

It’s a challenge moving forward - fans aren’t happy that their sport is so widely spread across broadcaster options and it’s having an impact. Moving to somewhere like Optus might be a safer move to try and shore up an audience.

Might be worth doing an NBL style deal with Optus paying whatever amount to show every game, then doing a rev share deal with an FTA (perhaps SBS) to show a game or two a week.

That way they’d get their games in front of EPL/La Liga fans, but still have the FTA exposure.

Having 2 games live on FTA is better than having it all behind a paywall.

If you watch EPL, A-league, FA Cup and the FIFA WWC and the upcoming Euros , you only need Optus and Paramount+, so it’s not that bad.

The Paramount+ and 10bold coverage is good, I don’t think it would improve if it went anywhere else TBH.

Just two things.

  1. 10’s TV guide has the broadcast starting at 3pm for this Sunday’s game
  2. According to 10’s Isuzu UTE A-League fixtures and broadcast times, the game in NZ has it exclusive to P+

There surely comes a point though where FTA networks start saying it’s not worth their effort. The current situation where ten has little to no sport is somewhat advantageous to the a-league in terms of getting coverage.

There are also alternate options to allow free access without being on FTA. The rusted on fans will pay - they have since the league’s inception but it has impacts on the league’s ability to grow new fans

The game has some fairly serious issues to face in the immediate future - as much as Ten would like to think they might get a second crack anything could happen especially if they can get more money from an alternate option
