Neighbours

I’m not sure those numbers are correct. The seem way too low for the UK.

how did neighbours get funding from channel 5 and BBC in the first place??? did people like the show that much that BBC and Channel 5 decided to invest in the show?? and I’m guessing it would have to have been sold on to the BBC and then channel 5?

The numbers might be higher now, but when 5 were moving it last year I took a look at why they would be moving the show from a traditional timeslot. If catch-up was where the big numbers were it made sense the 5.30 airing wasn’t as important any more

@MBB and @blackbox - enough of the sniping please. With a little understanding, you can find the perfect blend.

The sad thing is there is little to no credibility or respect for either Neighbours or Home and Away. You mention them and you get the smart ass reply ‘oh is that show still on?’. Rather than respect the fact that these shows have both been on air for well over 30 years, producing well over 200 episodes each year, they’re held up against shows like Wentworth who have 10-15 episodes in a season with a much bigger budget. (I’m not criticising Wentworth, I’m just using this as an example). Many actors see working on Neighbours or H&A a step backwards in their career, rather than embracing the possibility of getting a three year contract on a show that’s screened in multiple countries.

Personally, I hate that when it comes to handing out awards it seems both shows are overlooked by the judges. Aside of Eve Morey, who very much deserved the Logie nomination she received a few years ago, I can’t remember when an actor from either show was nominated in industry categories. Admittedly there are still actors on these shows that aren’t all that great, but others have been fantastic and have gone onto much bigger things. Sadly, only then does the media give them any credibility.

So it will air in the UK until the end of Summer (in the UK) on their current station, which will be the end of winter here is Australia? So it will be on air until August? That is my understanding.

Correct. Production will most likely continue up until April… but then it will stop if they can’t secure a new UK partner.

This is nothing new, though. People said the same about soaps back in the '70s. These were often top rating shows that churned out hundreds of episodes a year, employed hundreds of actors, writers and production crew and kept networks from otherwise going bankrupt, but there was still that cringe because they weren’t seen as prestigious or respectable as the weekly procedurals that probably had a more generous budget, or the the blockbuster mini-series.

You’d probably see the same in the UK at any mention of Coronation Street or EastEnders. It sort of comes with the territory even if unjust.

BBC One started airing Neighbours in (IIRC) 1986 and after a few years, the show started to gain traction ratings-wise and built up a loyal audience during the '90s. The BBC continued to air Neighbours until 2008 when they decided not to meet what Fremantle was asking them to pay in order to continue airing the show. That allowed Channel 5 to step in and pick up the program.

Also just worth pointing out…

10 and Channel5 are both owned by ViacomCBS…

was going to mention that…

I wonder how much more 10 would be willing to invest in the shows production costs than they already are…I imagine a new UK broadcaster will want to spend less than Ch5 did on production costs.

Dont worry dude I knew what you meant with your headline . You can’t please everyone. It is only a minor issue not sure why he made a big deal about it. Technicqlly it has been axed in the UK after August and any reader would read the article to see the explanation . ,

It will be interesting to see which UK network will take it on, wonder if Sky would and capilitize on it.

It’s not a matter of “which” but “if” a UK Network want it.

Umh So. The time it took you to respond you could have easily skipped over the comments. No need to get petty. Rolls eyes.

No not really, they just want another Broadcaster to pony up all the money and they reap the benefits without having to dip into their pockets. 10 could foot the bill, they just don’t want too.

Not anymore since Seven dumped their in house drama department. ITV studios is producing the new series of MKR, Screentime SAS Australia, Endemol Shine for Big Brother. Not sure but I think H&A might be the only show apart from news that 7 produces in house still.

How can they unless the pay for production costs instead of just paying a fee to air it. BBC is about to go bust, ITV are already freaking out over their own diminishing soaps with schedule changes and Channel 4 may or may not not be privatised. Unless it’s sport do Sky’s programmes even rate that well. I remember they tried Shortland Street and yanked it off after three months.

Fair, we just all know there is no way that’s going to happen though

You would be wise to take staff feedback on board rather than respond in this manner.
