The Federal Government said the upgrade would involve expanding the Fibre To The Node (FTTN) system by building “local fibre networks” that would run along street fronts, enabling people to connect their homes directly to the network when they wanted.
“Very importantly, it will be based on the principle of demand,” Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said.
“So we’ll roll the fibre down the street, but then the fibre lead into the home will only be built when there’s a customer order.”
There will also be upgrades on the Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) network to support faster speeds, work on the Fibre To The Curb (FTTC) network to deliver “consistent” speeds of 100 megabits per second and work to resolve in-home cabling issues for houses on the FTTN network.
Mr Fletcher said now was the right time for the network upgrade.
also just a note if you are upgrading to the ftth from fftn make sure ur modem can take the new speeds. i had to end up buy a $300 google nest from moving to a house from fttn to a house on the fttp
What an appalling waste of money has resulted from the Abbott government cancelling Labor’s FttP design. Even now they’re announcing as if everyone will be able to get fibre but then in the fine print saying you have to prove you need it?
I’ve been listening to the press conference and it is unbelievable how many times he has said that Labor’s NBN was trash.
An absolute fucking joke. The fact that they are still dodging a fullscale FTTP rollout is absurd. It will never happen as long as the Liberals remain in power because otherwise it’d be “Labor was right”.
I’m not convinced this move is solely about the end-user - they’ve known for some time that 5G is likely to devalue large portions of the NBNco’s infrastructure and there are plans to “sell off” the network in the future. Theres also been some acceptance that the copper network is a much worse state then previously anticipated.
Coronavirus has probably pushed the decision over the edge that we need a decent, high-speed network. The Government now need to fix the regulatory issues (like the stupid number of POIs mandated by the ACCC and the crap fee structures)
with my partner and i moving from a house that had fttn to a house that had fttp but had to acctually get fftp it was a nightmare. 1 the nbn crew who installed the nbn fire to the house didnt do there job properly 2 when the tech guy came to install the fttp the fibre was to short and the draw string broke . so he had to get back to the nbn to tell them it needed to be redone . so i rang my rsp aussie broadband and told them what happned. Was told to call the tio so i did.2 days later got a phone call from the nbn . Nbn doesnt know how to handle public complaints. Was told it should have gone back to aussiebroaband rather then nbn. told said person it was aussiebroadband fault nbn mucked up . said person from nbn told me he would see what he could do but didnt make any promises. Last tuesday guy came back and installed the fibre properly this time . Then got an sms saying that on monday just gone fttp will be installed. by 4pm monday night we finally got intternet on . a week after it was suppsed to be on
There are too many dodgy installers being used by nbn, and now they’ll get more work ripping out their quick-and-nasty node installs they’ve done to finally put fibre in.
It still would’ve been best (and certainly cheaper) to have stuck with Labor’s fibre plan, do it once & properly, even if it takes a little longer initially, it’d be done & long-lasting
$3.5 billion allocated (this time) to do the fibre runs down the street based on the assumption that only 20% of FTTN customers will be upgraded to FTTP
FTTC and HFC are getting capacity upgrades (I think only 7% of HFC connected sites can get 1000mbps down at present - correct me if wrong) but I don’t think they are actually eligible for the “free” upgrade to FTTP at this point
And I’ve learnt that the offer is only available for new customers. $180 for existing. So I can bet you I’ll be jumping on 24x7 chat to get the discount applied.
