NBN News

Because the NRL is an “asset”, the only media outlet who might do something us Seven but given the costs of producing a local bulletin, not likely at all.

Seven could produce a local bulletin cheaply if they wanted to but i doubt it would occupy the 6pm slot possibly at 5:30pm with filler stories from Taree and Port Macquarie. If you look at how little NBN Newcastle has in local news per bulletin, usually no more than 12 minutes, its more likely to be a multi-region bulletin, but for obvious reasons wont eventuate.

NBN is unlikely to be challenged at 6pm by a local news competitor in the Newcastle area

That’s probably on a good night, I’ve seen NBN put Sydney (and other NNSW) news stories in their local windows some nights as well.

I’ve seen a few 9 News bumpers prior to weather/sports reports tonight (like the below), someone putting in the wrong package somewhere.

They use that 9 graphic into the sports break in the 7:30 show whenever it has a sponsor. They don’t seem to have made an NBN version.

This is also used at the end of sponsor billboards leading up to sport reports on 9News Gold Coast (at the end of the 2nd ad break during the 5:30 news on the QTQ GC opt-out).

NBN NEWS WINS 2025 RATINGS YEAR

ACROSS NORTHERN NSW

NBN News continues its dominance as Northern NSW most watched and trusted news service

claiming an unbeatable victory for the 2025 television ratings year.

At the conclusion of the 21st week of the 40-week official ratings survey period, NBN News 6-7pm

Sunday-Saturday has won every single week throughout the entire viewing area of Northern NSW.

NBN News has proven to be the market leader for the 33rd consecutive survey year and has seen

strong audience growth across Total People and all key demographics (see below).

There has also been significant BVOD audience growth on 9Now for all news bulletins across all key

demographics, including a massive 62.8% increase for Weekday (Total People).

Darius Winterfield, Nine/NBN’s Director of Regional News, said:

"Winning the ratings year for Northern New South Wales is an incredible achievement and a reflection

of the trust our viewers place in us to deliver the news that matters to them, every night.

I’m incredibly proud of our teams in every market, from the Central Coast to Newcastle, Taree, Port

Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, Lismore and Tamworth. Not only can NBN News claim the year, but we

have also grown our audience. The relentless dedication of our teams and their connection to the

community is the foundation of our success.

This is also a testament to our innovation in news, sport and weather delivery across broadcast and

digital platforms, including 9Now. We are grateful for the loyalty of our audience and we don’t take this

for granted - we will continue to work tirelessly to maintain their trust.

The sad thing is despite this, at some point, possibly by the end of the decade I can see some bureaucrat in Sydney trying to change the 6pm bulletin to the Sydney edition to align NBN with other east coast regionals. This will probably happen once the inevitable of WIN becoming part of Nine. I can see NBN News becoming a region wide half hour at 5:30pm with Nine Gold Coast News and WIN News becoming all rebranded at Nine News Extra, screening 5:30 weekdays, no weekend editions with it moving to.9Go! if sports events like NRL and Tennis broadcasts conflicts with its normal slot.

I think pen pushers in Sydney will be like a lot of big business, the attitude is they can watch it at the “new” time, worry about profit over people thinking the Nine brand sells itself. NBN, like WIN (at least in its home market) is a heritage brand that is sadly only there in name to distinguish it as a “local” bulletin. Even all of Seven’s regional operations including local news were rebranded to align it to the station identity.

Im hoping i am wrong and the brands heritage holds up, even in local news name and format, but im almost certain in the next 5 years NBN News and WIN News will be no more

That’s some incredible growth. Up 34% year on year when young people are leaving broadcast TV. What would be behind such a huge growth spurt?

I don’t think so.

Project > 10 News + is what happens when you try new formats the viewers don’t want in order to save money

You halve your audience overnight.

I think that is digital only ie 9Now, and all similar platforms would have had some sort of increase too.

It’d be Nine News Local more likely.

Got it
Why don’t they put viewership numbers In the release?

Probably just to make it look better. Such press releases are very selective with what and how they present data just to spin it better.

eg. 7 News Local probably still won their heritage markets, but they don’t mention that.

They would rather you forget 7NEWS local bulletins even existed in some Northern NSW markets in the first place. NBN sees 7NEWS in these markets as a dinosaur, partially true because the local 7NEWS bulletins only run on weekdays, but mainly not true because 7NEWS has mainly local news in their first 30 minutes of the dedicated 6pm news hour. Whereas NBN have been running a fair amount of anomalies, Coffs news on the GC, GC news in Coffs. And even then the GC gets almost no more local news from NBN anymore, instead receiving the Lismore window.

So in short, in markets where 7NEWS has a local bulletin presence, on weekdays that’s the place for your local news, then NBN on weekends and hope your area gets covered.

Kinda surprised at BVOD growth given just how difficult Nine makes it to actually watch - unlike how 7plus just has the local bulletins for direct catch up.

They could probably make further growth by making them as watchable as the metro 6pm product.

I think part of the issue is that (as far as I know) its still only Newcastle and Northern Rivers that get NBN News on 9Now.

Until they make it network wide, it’ll probably never get the promotion it needs and not be available for catch up eg. NBN News being on 9 Now is never promoted on air.
