NBN News

This crap from Stanton

“The decision to sell any business is not made lightly, nor is it a reflection of the talented people who make up that business – but reshaping Nine is critical to our success,” Stanton said, wishing the NBN and Darwin teams “all the best for the future.”

Corporate PR spin that’s up there with the best there is (and by that, I mean its absolute bullsht)

It’s rivalling the crap that WIN is coming out with to justify their plans.

Even people within the industry are coming out saying these are stupid ideas

If government figures are serious about this, remove all government ad spending from Nine AND WIN. Maybe convince a certain NRL chairman/interim CEO to cut Nine out from NRL broadcasting if this is how they’re treating their product in regional areas (which WIN broadcasts to) - it won’t happen but fuck me it’d be funny if PVL says WIN and Nine are craptacular.

It’s not like Seven or Ten are really any better

I know. But one can only hope.

To be fair, offloading smaller linear TV stations when you have 9Now and Stan and are morphing for a digital / streaming future is sound business. Personally I’d prefer Nine own all affiliates like Seven and 10, but if was my job to build Nine into a streaming / digital first entertainment company for the next 25 years, I may well follow his move. Nine is far ahead of Seven in this regard.

If I understand you correctly WIN News combined bulletins normally get around 75k at 5.30?

175,000 on Monday; 164,000 on Tuesday.

Looking at universe estimates did some rough back of envelope maths.

Tipping Point gets around 3.2% share at 5.30

10 News around a 1.3% share

Win News based on that figure around a 0.8% share. So around half what 10 News gets. That’s a significant underperformance, which could be tied directly to the quietly of the product.

but that is with the incorrect inflation right, you said normally it gets 100k less, so 65-75k?

No they are the normal results as often posted here. Incorrect number was Wednesday that was higher.

TBF that’s actually not that bad then. That implies a share higher than 10 News - so not such a bad result at all.

Late to the party but with NBN moving to 530, how many regional bulletins air 6pm?

The only one I can think of is Albury on Seven.

You could count Tasmania but that is the main bulletin for the state

AFAIK these are the regional offerings from all three networks. Happy to be corrected.

Hot take: 10 should bite the bullet and air regional news at 6pm. Make it 30 minutes.
Have Deal start at 6.30pm and air Lingo/TFL/Bondi Rescue at 6pm in metro markets.

Surely that has a better chance than the stinker of News+ right now?
Newcastle alone could pull competitive numbers

With what resources though?

Possibly worth noting just how few of those are live. Seven Tasmania, WA, Sunshine Coast and I believe the Tweed bulletin are live, while nothing WIN does is.

Even if it has to be at 5:30 - Newcastle should still be live, and they could do what Seven do in Queensland/NSW, have the flexibility to flip a different region to be the live bulletin of the night should news circumstances warrant it.

WIN’s biggest problem is they miss news by a day because they need it all recorded in the middle of the afternoon. A local control room isn’t much help if they have left for the day before it airs.

Do what Regional QLD do.
They have a Melbourne/Sydney studio they use currently or reuse the old Sydney Project Studio.
Much better use of funds than News+ is

Sure but with what journos? With what equipment? With what office space? 10 don’t have any of these things in the regions, nor do they even have an actually popular news brand to give them a running start.

Reading newspaper articles and social media posts work for noodle updates but they don’t work for a 30 minute bulletin. And the 10 affiliates don’t have the synergy they used to have with the local SCA radio stations who did have staff on the ground.

Maybe 10 could do some deals with local newspapers or independent radio stations (ARN perhaps??) but I don’t think the loss making network is going to start the uphill investment heavy battle of regional news.

Did you make an error here? It should be the same as Hunter (which gets noodle updates from Seven).

Also Seven don’t do any local news for the Gold Coast, I believe the ‘Coast’ bulletin coverage goes as far north as Tweed Heads.

Looks like a one off software/data entry error. Back to average on Thursday - actually a big below on 140,000.
