NBN News (2015-Feb 2025)

It’d fit much better with the current graphics package and style of the metro sets than their current setup. Yes it’s a 3 year-old hand-me-down but it’s definitely newer than their current 10+ year-old hand-me-down.

They’ve got plenty of space at Mosbri Crescent based on the previous set move, but I doubt that the Honeysuckle studio will end up being large enough.

Not so sure about the rest of the viewing area, but I was under the impression that Novocastrians are some of the most parochial, anti-Sydney people in NSW.

So with that in mind, Peter Overton & Georgie Gardner on Hunter Valley TV screens would probably be as welcomed by local residents as the NRL deciding to move the Knights!

Finally, a bit of common sense from a mainstream media company.

Good idea keeping local news production in Newcastle, and not moving it to the shithole that is Sydney (in any direction, north, south, east or west). Any move of production to Sydney and I’d reckon someone they won’t want to piss off will ark up very quickly (as in a local politician, not me, as much as it pains me to admit :stuck_out_tongue: ) calling for the action to be reversed.

I’d like to see them keep the name NBN but that won’t happen. It’d be nice to see a rollback of this “Sydneyisation” of names, and some regionalisation of station identity and operations but I’m more likely to get a :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: from (insert attractive female celebrity) than that happening. The Yanks get that bit right but not much else.

“I didn’t like it when the network changed my news and took away what I’m used to. So I think the network should change what NNSW news and take away what they are used to because it’s not what I’m used to.”

Did I get that correct?

Yeah, the Gold Coast television market can get a little tricky. However, should Nine axe the NBN News brand for good, given that it’s not a mandatory market for local content, I think those transmitters in GC targeting NNSW border zones might need to remove any redundancy, and possibly carry out Nine Gold Coast News and Nine News Queensland into their schedule, but with NNSW-specific ads instead of ones shown on QTQ. I don’t know how Kylie Blutcher will pull this complex market up for both border areas, but we’ll see how Nine deals with this new development.

Nine could trial different things on those “NBN Gold Coast” channels like a graphic based Weather Channel or text and vision based News Channel.

A tourist channel would even work. To bring it back on topic, there could be occasional news bulletins/updates interspersed into it.

Seems totally pointless they’re pretty much a direct feed of QTQ except the 6pm news and local ads.

What NBN should do with the GC market is just scrap the GC bulletin and just have the Northern Rivers bulletin with Gold Coast stories that’s what they used to do about 15 years ago. WIN, Prime, and NBN will always be seen as the Northern NSW stations to GC locals there’s no point in putting QLD content on NBN to confuse locals.

Or better still, a relay of Nine News Sydney would probably attract more viewers than either option.

But that won’t happen either.

Not surprising. I don’t think NBN in Newcastle / northern NSW want to do things the same as 9 Sydney all the time

I am of the view that 9 won’t axe the NBN brand because it’s fearful of a backlash from the people of Newcastle. I think the name NBN News will be around for a long time yet to come. The people of Newcastle are happy to do things differently to the people of Sydney

In the 4:55pm cross from Nine’s Afternoon News to the newsroom for “a look at what’s coming up in tonight’s news at six”, Northern Rivers got a news promo, not an actual update. Not sure if the same thing happened elsewhere or not.

NBN did a separate live bulletin for SE QLD!

That is 2 hours of live news in one night.

Fair play to them. That is what a regional station is meant to do - serve their audience, not just shove whatever metro crap up our collective backsides and tell us to enjoy it.

They need to do so on a more consistent basis across the entire license area. So does every other license in Australia.

Should we be applauding NBN for doing something that arguably should be a thing every night of this seasonal timezone split though?

Well done to them, but I wonder how many viewers up there knew about it, or would have seen it?

With 7 and 9 already covering that area well, I can’t help but think that their efforts would be better served in the Central Coast and North West markets where they seem to be a light on for local news.

PAUL LOBB AND NATASHA BEYERSDORF CELEBRATE 10 YEARS TOGETHER AS
NBN NEWS PRESENTERS

NBN News presenters Paul Lobb and Natasha Beyersdorf will mark a decade on-air together next month. They have brought an era of memorable moments to viewers as they co-anchor the Number #1 News service across Northern NSW and the Gold Coast.

Since 2010 viewers have welcomed Paul and Natasha into their homes five nights a week.

Paul was initially employed by NBN in 1993 as a trainee chyron operator/librarian. He then left to work in radio and returned to NBN in 1998 as a news journalist in the Port Macquarie office. A year later he moved to the Newcastle newsroom.

Paul was a backup reader to long-time news readers Ray Dinneen and John Church in the early 2000’s and stepped into Ray’s role a decade ago.

One of Paul’s career highlights was his coverage of the Pasha Bulker storm, for which he received a Walkley commendation.

“Working alongside Tash for the past decade has been a pure joy. I really feel that time has flown, sharing the events of the world and the local area with our viewers. It’s such a privilege to be invited into our viewers’ lounge rooms every night. People are at the heart of what we do, and whether it’s delivering the news from the desk or hosting events in our community, the people we work with and meet along the way are the highlights for me.” said Lobb.

Natasha commenced work with NBN in 2002 as a journalist/producer and stand in newsreader.

Natasha had previously worked with Hunter Health and was News Director of Prime Television.

Natasha moved into the full-time reading role in 2006 replacing Melinda Smith and was joined by Paul a decade ago.

One of Natasha’s career highlights is being able to continue her passion for on the road reporting, while also presenting NBN News, and being afforded the time and resources to explore various community-based issues. Natasha is most proud of the NBN News mental health series, Mind Matters, which won a state award, presented by the NSW Governor.

“It’s a privilege to have been in this job for so long, telling the stories of our local communities and of course, the happenings from right around the world. To be doing that alongside one of the best, in Lobby, is icing on the cake.”

“10 years on-air together is such a great milestone for us. We’re a real team and work closely to deliver the best product possible for our viewers. We’re also good mates and in our downtime, manage to have a few laughs … which have been badly needed in 2020.” said Beyersdorf.
