NBN News (2015-Feb 2025)

Good to hear that the plan (at least for now) is for presentation of the bulletin to remain in Newcastle rather than move to North Sydney, but I wonder if the NBN News branding will continue or if the Northern NSW service will join the rest of the network in being presented as Nine News?

Either way, I’d be willing to predict that after the move, Northern NSW bulletins will finally be in native HD. Possibly a new (or at least slightly newer than the current Nine News hand-me-down in use) set as well?

If they don’t do it during this move to Honeysuckle they never will. They should just go ahead and do it already.

  • Nine News Newcastle, or Nine News Hunter

Good news re the move.
A little bit surprised that it’s not being moved to North Sydney however.
They continue to muddy the waters re branding in that article though.

Not sure about everyone else, but the current branding situation probably wouldn’t bother me as much as it does if we had either NBN News on NBN Television or Nine News on Channel Nine. But instead, it’s NBN News on Channel Nine (on 8/80)…talk about confusing!

And recently they’ve been running (going the latest post from MarkHD) Nine News Sports Break Sponsor Billboards for KFC Newcastle which one presumes, have been produced locally!

I would expect at the very least that the news will be produced in HD. Pointless moving into a new facility and not have HD capability.

As for a rebrand, I would say that they should rebrand for consistency’s sake but I don’t think they will.

And Nine News Gold Coast…oh wait.

Great move. Surprised they are remaining local given all the North Sydney talk.
The article mentions upgrading their aging technology.

As we’ve said in the Today Extra thread, it wouldn’t surprise me if they receive some of the existing pieces once Nine start moving.
Wouldn’t mind them taking the Studio 3 setup (especially that nice big screen)

Hope they get a new screen though because the quality of that screen leaves a LOT to be desired.

I’d be happy to see the Studio 3 set used by NBN News (yes it’s fairly basic and approaching five years old, but even it would be a major upgrade for NBN over the current one) but certainly not those cameras which make just about all presenters look a decade older than they actually are!

One thing I think most of us can agree on: NBN News should continue using their awesome 2014 theme music until/unless Nine News ever gets an updated theme. Changing to Nine News’ current theme music, music that is (to the best of my understanding) older than NBN News’ 2008-2014 theme music would be a major, major downgrade!

Yes, it can be difficult to distinguish between “Nine Gold Coast News” and “Nine News Gold Coast” (9NBN), but given the latter’s limited popularity, it is a minor issue. Also that on air, both stations are branded as “Nine” outside of the evening news anyway.

It’s better than the screen in the current Today studio at least. That one is shocking and really showing its age.

I reckon they both suck big time. One looks aged and extremely pixelated. The other is almost burnt out. Comparatively the Studio 23 screen looks slightly better but they both look appalling quality wise.

Not me. They should have consistency across the news bulletin. It’s dumb using the same graphics package as other bulletins but different music.

Yep. I’d prefer the Nine News theme for whatever NBN News becomes.

If NBN News goes, the theme should go too.

Agree. I’m clearly not from NNSW so I’m not sure what people think from a local perspective, but it has just been a big limbo since they started phasing out “NBN” in favour of “Nine”.

Not sure where you live, but what you need to understand is… most regional viewers don’t want to watch the metro news at 6:00… They want to watch local news!

That’s why the current model works well

I live in Western Victoria and I didn’t like the previous Nine Regional News bulletins since they replaced the metro news and I missed having Peter Hitchener on our screens.

Okay, fair enough that you didn’t like it…
But you’re making wild suggestions here about NBN News (and about Seven News regional in the relevant thread) moving timeslot so that people can watch the metro news, without even being a local viewer of either of these bulletins.

I can assure you, as a Townsville resident that locals would much rather watch 7 News Townsville at 6:00… not 7 News Brisbane, and they certainly wouldn’t want the local news moved to 5:30 just to have a full hour of irrelevant Brisbane news.
I’m sure the same could be said about the NBN News viewers in Northern NSW.

I think when the move to Honeysuckle occurs, they’ll use that as the opportunity to rebrand to Nine News, so that the move reinforces that it’s still local and offsets any potential negative about the name change.
