The competition travels to Townsville, as brother and sister, Danny and Sonia hope to impress judges Manu Fieldel and Colin Fassnidge with their fresh local seafood.

The loveable larrikins begin the night with Townsville Mudcrab with Mango chilli dip. Main is Filet Mignon with Prawn Toppers and Beer Battered Wedges, but will their tribute to surf and turf end in disaster?

Episode 5 - Instant Restaurant - Hannah & Lawrence WA

Tuesday 17 September 7:30 pm

Tonight, the competition continues in Perth, where lovebirds Hannah and Lawrence hope to impress their judges and guests at their Instant Restaurant, Missing Piece.

Hannah Campbell competed in season 12 of Big Brother in 2020. She entered the house as an intruder and was evicted on day 27.

Maths not a Colin strong point, he said tonight that the total score was “out of 100”, but its out of 110. I’m surprised that wasn’t reshot or edited out.

They (other teams) didn’t reveal the scores to the team directly this first episode.

Also the very first episode was way too long and very ad heavy. Also I think it showed less cooking than normal too.

I think from tomorrow it’s 10mins shorter (but still too long for my liking)

I noticed that too, maybe that’s only in another phase of the series?

MKR ignites

Rob and Liam set fire to the leaderboard with a winning bourbon sauce dessert

Tonight on the season return of MKR, competitive brothers Rob and Liam set fire to the leaderboard with a total score of 84 out of 110 for their Instant Restaurant: Yakety Yaks.

The close-knit brothers from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula served local Safety Beach Mussels in a Cajun sauce for their entree, Beef Short Ribs with Nduja Cauliflower Cheese for main and Peanut Butter S’mores with Bourbon Caramel sauce for dessert.

Dining at Yakety Yaks were MKR’s other new teams: Western Australia’s loved-up couple Hannah and Lawrence and fussy friends Mike and Pete; Queensland siblings Danny and Sonia and modern Italian friends Simone and Viviana; as well as young mums from Adelaide Ash and Cassie.

Also at the dinner table, MKR judge Colin Fassnidge warned the teams: “You are not going to know what hit you. At the end of this round, there’s a twist coming. Something that has never happened on MKR before. It’s going to be a wild ride.”

Friends Mike and Pete made their mark early declaring Rob and Liam were “playing it safe, the dishes were basic” setting the tone for some robust competition with fellow Italians Simone and Viviana.

Mike revealed their strategy: “I want them to think we aren’t cooks, we are going to bomb out, we aren’t competitive, and we are going to walk away with the $100,000!”

Judge Manu Feildel acknowledged Rob and Liam’s entrĂ©e was “a great dish, but it could have been better."

The brothers rallied and went “from strength to strength" according to Colin. Despite some inconsistencies in the main, Colin complimented the fact his butter knife cut through the ribs, and Manu recognised they were soft, juicy and “well-seasoned with a beautiful crust on the outside,” earning a strong seven from both judges.

Dessert was a highlight with a bourbon sauce Colin “would buy in a shop.”

The judges awarded Rob and Liam a total score of 47 out of 60, including a nine from both Manu and Colin for their dessert. The guest teams gave them a score of 37, bringing Rob and Liam’s overall total to 84 out of 110.

Tomorrow on MKR: The competition continues in Adelaide, where young mums Ash and Cassie hope to impress the judges and fellow competitors with their healthy Asian-inspired meals.

Dietitians’ Instant Restaurant goes pork belly up

Adelaide mums struggle cooking against the clock

Tonight on MKR, Ash and Cassie hoped to impress with healthy Asian-inspired meals served at their Instant Restaurant, Dieticians Dishing It, but poor timing resulted in an overall score of 60 out of 110.

The young mums from Adelaide got off to a strong start with their entrée of Duck Pancakes, receiving sevens from judges Manu Feildel and Colin Fassnidge.

Feeling confident about their main, Crispy Pork Belly with Green Papaya Salad, they got to work as Ash revealed how much Cassie’s support has meant following Ash’s recent Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis.

The pair’s high was brought crashing down by a visit to the kitchen from Colin, who pointed out they should have started cooking their pork hours ago.

With the guests left feeling hungry, Ash and Cassie attempted to speed up the cooking process. The peanut sauce was a hit, but the pork belly left disappointing results for their main.

Manu acknowledged the pork’s crispy skin, but declared: “the pork underneath was unseasoned, unloved and undercooked."

In putting a healthy twist on their Coconut Kaffir Lime Panna Cotta with Lime Syrup and Ginger Crumb for dessert, Ash and Cassie received feedback the dessert lacked in sugar.

While Colin didn’t mind the lack of sweetness and loved the syrup, he admitted the dish “needed more elements.”

After the wheels fell off in the main, the overall reception to Ash and Cassie’s Instant Restaurant was hit and miss, and they received a less than stellar final combined score of 60 out of 110.

Dessert disaster after a near perfect start

Under the Stars crashes back down to Earth

Tonight on MKR, a dessert disaster undid a near-perfect entrée for modern Italians Simone and Viviana, with a final combined score of 74 out of 110 proving they are a force to be reckoned with without a simple mistake in the kitchen.

The best friends’ Instant Restaurant, Sotto le Stelle (Under the Stars), served up a Ricotta and Prawn Cannoli Salati entrĂ©e: the first dish to earn a 10 in the competition from Colin.

“If you twist a tradition you need to make sure to nail it,” declared Simone.

Promising “Italian food you haven’t tasted before,” there were high expectations, especially for the main dish: Tagliatelle Ragu Di Polpo (Octopus).

Viviana wiped away happy tears as Colin and Manu gave maximum acclaim to their main pasta dish: "You are not professional chefs, [but] have taught me new dishes, new flavours and new techniques. I love that,” Manu praised.

“I think this dish is going to be one we remember for a long time.”

On top of the world after their main, Under the Stars came crashing back down to Earth after Viviana realised she forgot the flour in the Pistachio Tortino dessert. In tears, she exclaimed “it’s my fault,” as the dessert dish didn’t cook through.

Without enough plates to serve, Simone and Viviana went with a last resort: asking teams to share one dessert between two, while the judges received one each.

Manu admitted: “In all my years of MKR we’ve never had this type of trouble before, it has never happened before in the competition.”

Dessert wasn’t the only drama at the table when Mike questioned whether Simone was a professional chef, not a home cook, after finding out he has a restaurant and works front-of-house.

Simone and Viviana defended the accusation: Simone is not a chef. Was this a ploy to get them off their game?

Scoring a two from Colin and a three from Manu, alongside teams commenting their dessert tasted like dough, Simone and Viviana’s dessert brought their overall score to 74 out of 110.

Monday night on MKR: The competition travels to Townsville, as brother and sister team Danny and Sonia hope to impress the judges and their fellow contestants with some North Queensland flair.

I notice one of the terms of Spotlight’s Rate the Plate competition (in which viewers are asked to rate a dish cooked by each team during the instant restaurants stage, as chosen by the producers) that the competition finishes on November 24. With MKR now screening at two nights a week, is Seven planning to extend the season all the way to the end of November?

They don’t have any other shows after MKR so it is a possibility.

Since the reboot they had only 15-16 eps (12 instant restaurants then quarter final, semi final & final)

They normally have 2 groups of instant restaurants which would take 4 weeks (3 eps each week) but the article said there will be more than usual. So maybe it’s 3 rounds of instant restaurants which would take 6 weeks (3 eps each week)

Even then 24th November would be 11 weeks since ep 1. So it would be a very long season.

Coming up on MKR

Episode 6: Tuesday 24 September

After talking a big game all week, Mike and Pete are hoping to impress the judges, with their old school Italian classic menu with a twist.

Episode 7: Wednesday 25 September

It’s a brand new round of Instant Restaurants and we’re in Sydney with mum and son Gatecrasher team Caz and Fergus first up to cook.

The promo showed that at least 2 teams from current round 1 will be in round 2 (unless that was good editing). 1 team is currently in 2nd place and the other is yet to cook.

So will be interesting to see which rankings participate in the 2nd round if it’s new and old

Surely a new round of instant restaurant is not the twist which has not been done on the show before (according to Colin in the preview at the start of the first episode).

Surf and Turf wipeout!

High steaks as MKR siblings ignore Colin’s advice

Tonight on MKR, brother and sister Danny and Sonia from Townsville made everyone feel at home at their Instant Restaurant: The Broasis. Despite the laid-back pub vibe, their food failed to fire, with a total score of 56 out of 110 landing the likable duo on the bottom of the MKR leaderboard.

With a mission to show off local produce, their Townsville Mud Crab with Mango Chilli Dip entrĂ©e – “Australia on a plate” according to Colin – impressed.

After Danny sparked up his angle grinder to cut through the crab shells, the judges gave glowing reviews, but felt the Mango chilli sauce detracted from the “delicious, sweet meat.”

The main: Filet Mignon with Garlic Prawn Toppers, Beer Battered Wedges and Bacon Broccoli Salad ended in disaster after Danny ignored Colin’s advice and put the expensive cut of meat into the oven before searing it.

The siblings hoped flavour saved the meal, but their fellow teams were shocked and the judges scathing at Danny’s cooking blunder with the steak.

Manu said: “I have a piece of wet cardboard on my plate.” Colin agreed: “You tried to give us too much and it backfired.”

One element of their main, the garlic prawns – a special dish to Sonia as the last meal she had with her dad before he passed away – was praised, but couldn’t save the dish.

Danny was “absolutely gutted," believing he let Sonia down, but Sonia disagreed: “He didn’t need to come here (on MKR) with me, and he did. That will forever matter."

The supportive siblings tried to rally in the kitchen, but their Espresso Martini Trifle dessert didn’t set, leaving them at the bottom of the leaderboard and at risk of elimination.

Also at the table, Mike apologised to Simone and Viviana for accusing Simone of being a chef at the last Instant Restaurant, but also dropped that it was Hannah who told him about Simone’s restaurant business.

Lawrence jumped to Hannah’s defence and tensions simmered as Danny and Sonia tried to save their place in place in the competition.

Why did Danny use an angle grinder to cut a crab in half during the cook? Isn’t it unhygienic?

Lovebirds deliver sweet and sour Instant Restaurant

How do you like them apples?

Tonight on MKR, Hannah and Lawrence proved the course of love doesn’t always run smoothly in the kitchen scoring 68 out of 110.

The loved-up couple set their sights on the top spot, but before too long the honeymoon was over, landing them in the middle of the leaderboard.

Despite manifesting a high score of 88 and inspiring each other with motivational quotes, they served an underwhelming entrée of Croquettes de Fromage with Ginger Brussel sprouts and Jamon and Jalapeno Aioli.

The star of the night was a strong main dish of Lamb Rump with Crispy Onion Rings, Carrot puree and Carrot-Top Salsa, but their dessert – Baked Apples with Brandy Caramel and Cinnamon Ice cream – burst the team’s love bubble.

From episode one, Lawrence – who has only been cooking for about 18 months – made his intentions clear: he will propose to Hannah if they win MKR.

An emotional Lawrence shared the story behind their Instant Restaurant, Missing Piece, which was a tribute to Lawrence’s late mum who passed away when he was two. He always felt something was missing at the table until he met Hannah, declaring: “You are the missing piece to my puzzle.”

Mike shocked his fellow diners when he questioned if Lawrence’s motivation was to pull on the emotional heartstrings of the teams and influence their scoring.

Hannah’s “chaos and freedom" against Lawrence’s “order and stability” ensured arguments and tension in the kitchen.

Their entrĂ©e of croquettes got mixed reviews as Colin believed they tried to do too much. Hannah and Lawrence returned to the kitchen, redeeming themselves with a “top notch” main dish scoring a nine from Manu and eight from Colin.

Lawrence’s technical method of sous vide (vacuum-sealing the lamb and cooking it in a temperature-controlled water bath) impressed as Manu asked: "How are you able to cook an amazing piece of lamb like this?”

Despite the impressive presentation, dessert sent their scores back downhill after Hannah’s apples were not baked enough and the no-churn ice-cream over froze.

Tuesday night on MKR: The most anticipated Instant Restaurant is here! After talking the biggest game in the series so far, harsh critic Mike and self-proclaimed ‘King of Cannoli’ Pete, finally have to put their money where their mouths are.

MKR Continues 7.30pm Tuesday and Wednesday on Channel 7 and 7plus

I just watched my recording of Danny and Sonia’s instant restaurant. I feel sorry for them. They tried to showcase local produce and their cooking, but they put too many ingredients in the main and the dessert, and also failed to listen to Colin’s advice on cooking the beef mignon. That’s why they were at the bottom of the leaderboard.

I have also keeping an eye on the clock at the back wall of the instant restaurant. The guest teams were seated at 5.20pm. Manu and Colin arrived at 6.40pm. They gave the critiques of the main course to Danny and Sonia at 11pm. The dessert arrived at 1.30am. The scores were given out at 2.30am and all the guests departed at 2.50am. That was a LONG night.

Two of the three teams that would cook in the next round of instant restaurant are Janey and Maddie, and Robert and Andrea who featured in one of the promos. Janey and Maddie are literally Ash and Camilla 2.0.
