Just desserts

Bitter ends pave the way for a sweet semi-final on MKR

Tonight’s first MKR cook-off at Kitchen HQ came down to the wire. Three teams were shown the door, while two teams progressed to the semi-final after impressing judges Manu Feildel, Colin Fassnidge and new arrival Nigella Lawson.

Already fast-tracked to the semi-final, Radha, Prabha, Sonia and Marcus sat out of this round, while the next highest scoring team – Tommy and Rach – had a surprise in store. “We told you in the Instant Restaurants that every point would matter. Guess what? For this round, you are off the hook,” Colin said.

During the first round, the four remaining teams – Nick and Christian, Aaron and Chris, Claudean and Anthony, and Amber and Mel – faced-off in a mystery fridge challenge, with each team assigned a different hero ingredient.

The battle was intense between food maestros Nick and Christian and BBQ champions Aaron and Chris, when the former scored fruit and veg and the latter got their favourite meat: pork. “They cook pork more than any other protein. It’s a huge advantage,” Christian said.

Tasked with cooking beef, Amber and Mel opted for a Lebanese recipe from Mel’s mother-in-law; while Claudean struggled with the pressure of Kitchen HQ and over-compensated by loading up mountain-sized plates of food.

After tasting all four dishes, Manu, Colin and Nigella agreed that Aaron and Chris, Nick and Christian, and Claudean and Anthony were safe. Unfortunately after serving a split yogurt sauce with their kibbeh, childhood friends Amber and Mel were eliminated.

Mel expressed “so much gratitude that we’ve been able to get this far” as the team said their goodbyes.

In the second round, Tommy and Rach were back, as four teams were challenged to make competition-worthy desserts. When Nigella said she was expecting decadence on a plate, a nervous Claudean said: “There is a literal bad desserts club on MKR, we are all in it except for Sonia and Marcus.”

“We were proud cardholders of the bad dessert club. I believe we were the CEOs for a while,” Christian added.

With the last two spots in semi-final on the line, the pressure started to get the better of the teams. With just a few minutes to go, Claudean and Anthony discovered their zeppole was raw in the middle, Nick and Christian’s cheese cigars were failing in the fryer, and Aaron and Chris’ chocolate fondants were still in the oven.

At the end of the second round, Nick and Christian’s Blue Cheese Cigars with Red Wine Figs took the cake, landing the boys a spot in the semi-final. Manu loved that they went outside the box.

Tears of happiness started rolling down their faces when Nigella said: “As far as we three are concerned, yours was the best dessert of the night.”

Tommy and Rach were the second team into the semi-final. Sadly, it was the end of the road for Aaron, Chris, Claudean and Anthony.

Tomorrow night on MKR: Semi-finalists Radha and Prabha, Sonia and Marcus, Tommy and Rach, and Nick and Christian go head-to-head at Kitchen HQ to secure a place in MKR Grand Final.

Meet MKR’s 2023 Grand Finalists

Radha and Prabha and Nick and Christian compete for the crown

Tomorrow night the heat is on as Radha and Prabha (NSW) and Nick and Christian (Victoria) battle it out in the MKR Grand Final after tonight’s epic semi-final cooking at Kitchen HQ.

In a nail-biting semi-final tonight, Radha and Prabha, Sonia and Marcua, Tommy and Rach, and Nick and Christian battled it out over three courses. But there was a twist that no one saw coming: instead of a traditional entrée, the teams had to prepare amuse-bouche, or one-bite canapés.

“What we are looking for is one single bite of joy,” Nigella explained.

The lowest scoring team, Tommy and Rach, were eliminated after the judging of the entrées. Judges Manu, Colin and Nigella were underwhelmed with the team’s entrée of Stuffed Mushroom, as Colin explained they could have deep fried the mushroom instead of baking it for the crunch the entrée needed.

“I was really disappointed. But ultimately, I just felt an overwhelming sense of pride that we had made this far,” said Tommy.

The judges were happy with Sonia and Marcus’ main of Pork Cotoletta Tonnato with Fennel Salad, even though Nigella felt the texture of tonnato was a bit different from what it usually would be. The team were let down by the consistency of hazelnut mousse in their dessert of Chocolate Hazelnut Dacquoise, which Nigella pointed was due to poor time management.

Nick and Christian plated up a main of Ox Tongue with Tuna Gribiche. “This is such an outside of the box dish. We are taking a gamble,” Christian said.

The gamble paid off as Colin called the dish “restaurant quality”. The judges applauded the team’s dessert of Poached Apple with Whisky Caramel, with Nigella saying: “I’m astonished I have to say, in a very good way.” However, all three judges agreed that the plating for both dishes could have been better.

Radha and Prabha served their main of Chilli Masala Crab with Rice and Cucumber and Onion Salad. Manu found the dish “yum” and Colin said he “would happily eat that dish again”.

The team’s dessert of Rosewater and Cardamom Panna Cotta with Pistachio Crumble was a level up from their previous dessert in the competition, but Colin asked them to think about how they could lift the dish.

After the cook, Judge Nigella Lawson announced identical twins Radha and Prabha as the first team through to the Grand Final. “I think I’ve got goosebumps right now. We’re just so grateful. We are going to be living one of our biggest dreams that we’ve dreamt together,” said Prabha.

Nick and Christian – who were convinced they were going home after their high-risk strategy – were the second team in the semi-final. “We are not gonna let this opportunity go to waste,” Nick said.

Tomorrow on MKR: It’s Grand Final time and Radha and Prabha and Nick and Christian must prepare 100 plates to impress judges Manu Feildel, Colin Fassnidge and Nigella Lawson. Which team will be crowned MKR champions and win a life-changing $100,000 prize?

Radha and Prabha crowned 2023 MKR champions

Grand Final victory comes down to a knife’s edge

Tonight identical twins Radha and Prabha realised their dream of winning MKR, taking the crown with a score of 27/30 in a fiercely fought battle, with only two points separating them from runners up Nick and Christian.

The judges were in awe of the team’s authentic Indian menu, which paid homage to their late father and grandparents. Nigella said the menu gave her “deep joy”, while Manu said he was “delighted all night long”.

Prabha couldn’t believe it: “I’ll never ever forget this moment. I’m literally shaking my knees right now.”

Giving a shout-out to their mum, who was watching from the audience, Radha said: "Turns out the flavours you bring from your heritage, they’re the strongest roots that you can rely on.”

With a score of 25/30, Victoria’s Nick and Christian were buoyant after their performance. “I couldn’t be more proud of everything that we’ve achieved through this,” said Christian on their place in the competition.

Each team had to cook four courses totalling 100 plates of food for the Grand Final, racing against the Kitchen HQ clock to win the championship title and $100,000 prize money.

Radha and Prabha plated up an entrée of Spicy Fish Fry with Yellow Dhal and Tomato Chutney. Manu called the dish “absolutely delicious”, and Colin thought it was inviting and vibrant: “It was cooked perfectly, spiced perfectly.”

Nick and Christian served Scallops with Black Pudding and Bloody Mary Butter for their entrée. Manu said the team’s bloody Mary sauce was full of flavour and Nigella agreed with him.

Radha and Prabha presented Kerala Prawn Curry with Roti and Spiced Potato and Eggplant for their seafood dish.

Nigella thought the prawns were cooked well but she would’ve liked the sauce to be cooked a little more and the prawns a bit less.

“Everything worked. I love that little side dish, great with the bread,” said Colin.

For their seafood course, Nick and Christian opted for Crayfish with Vadouvan Butter and Witlof Salad.

Colin and Nigella applauded the team on perfectly cooking 25 portions of crayfish in time. “Take my hat off. That was just wonderful,” Nigella said.

Radha and Prabha called upon their grandfather’s recipe for Chicken Biryani with Cucumber Raita and Pickled Onion.

The aromas of the dish immediately enticed Manu: "I love the fragrant, spicy biryani, then the cool of raita, then the acidity and the crisp of the onion. All of this makes sense.”

Nick and Christian presented a meat course of Bavette with Red Wine Jus and Truffle.

Both Nigella and Manu questioned the team’s technique of sous vide. “I don’t really understand what they’ve gained by the sous vide. They haven’t got a crust on the outside,” Nigella said.

For the final course, dessert, Radha and Prabha presented Pistachio Ice Cream Chocolate Dome with Almond and Orange Crumb.

Colin called it their best dessert of the competition and Manu said: “You delivered something that was surprising and delicious and with technique.”

Nick and Christian plated up 3181 Mess for their dessert. Nigella said the texture and flavour of the yuzu curd was amazing, but the dish needed more of the cream.

The final scores determining the 2023 MKR winners were:

Judges’ Scores
Radha and Prabha 27/30
Manu Feildel 9
Colin Fassnidge 9
Nigella Lawson 9
Nick and Christian 25/30
Manu Feildel 9
Colin Fassnidge 8
Nigella Lawson 8

Finally sat down to watch the finale on 7plus this afternoon. It was a great cook. I think Radha and Prabha just won because of the flaw in Nick and Christian’s bavette dish (sous vide the steak didn’t help enhance the flavour).

Radha and Prabha’s mother was the most vocal, followed by Coco and Pearls and Tommy and Rach. Patricija and Brigita were very quiet during the cook, and only said once while tasting the dish.

They look like a great pair. :it:

FFS more stunt casting.

Why is it stunt casting? Are they famous?

MKR did very well last year, even beat The Block in initial weeks, does the industry think ‘it’s back’? Seven would be really buoyed, but still cautious :eyes:

“Style, class and modern Italian with a twist”

Simone and Viviana bring passion to the plate on MKR

Meet Simone and Viviana: best friends bringing passion, fashion, and flair to the kitchen when MKR launches on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Based in Queensland, but originally from Italy, Simone and Viviana want to serve Australia “style, class and modern Italian with a twist.”

Simone describes himself as “an adventurous cook, taking old classics and innovating them in new ways.”

Viviana recalls the first dish she ever prepared was “gnocchi alla romana with my grandma.”

With Simone’s catchphrase “tell me everything,” these modern Italians have very firm views on pineapple on pizza: it’s a hard no.

Both admit they cannot live without pasta and that food, family and friends are inseparable.

Larger-than-life siblings take a great Australian bite out of MKR

Brother and sister Danny and Sonia are putting the Aussie in Aussie cuisine when MKR launches on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Growing up in far North Queensland, the siblings were raised to hunt, fish and cook.

Sonia shares: “We didn’t have a lot growing up, but we did have love and we did have food.”

Danny, a butcher by trade with a “grouse” mullet, is here to “show some of my cooking skills to Australia, meet new people and just have a good time.”

The confident duo describes their dynamic as: “Fast and furious with passion. It’s a bro ‘n sis combo so there may be some debate about processes but at the end of the day we will have each other’s back and get the job done!”

Will these siblings “doin’ it for the everyday Aussies” be underestimated in the kitchen?

MKR sweethearts cooking up a plan for the prize money

Sweethearts Hannah and Lawrence are bringing the love to the kitchen when MKR returns to Channel 7 and 7plus.

The lovebirds from Western Australia are cooking up a plan for the prize money if they win: “If we win MKR I’m dropping on one knee, that’s non-negotiable,” Lawrence declares.

Lawrence, whose mum passed away when he was only two, reflected he’s never had family dinners as someone was always missing from the table.

“For a long time, food and cooking didn’t mean a lot to me, it was merely a means to stay full. After meeting Hannah that all changed. I now see why food and family are so intertwined,” Lawrence shared.

Hannah is set to bring her friendly, loud and outgoing personality to the MKR table admitting “sometimes I’m too much for people.”

Her cooking style runs on instinct, while Lawrence measures to perfection. Hannah discloses: “Lawrence and I have never argued. What could possibly go wrong?”

Can this couple keep their cool in the heat of the competition and have their happy ending?
