It’s officially a record smash hit:

Not sure about this take though, as it actually carries an ‘M’ rating here in Australia:

How about posting a comment rather than forcing us to click on links that may or may not work?
This post shows an illegal capture of the opening logos to Project Hail Mary, where a criticism has been made that Amazon have slapped “An Amazon Original Film” at the start and then used a 1950s MGM logo.
Rather than just using the current MGM logo with “An Amazon Company” line below.
Another noted that apparently this did not occur on IMAX 70mm prints.
And their first official trailer included the normal/current MGM logo, despite later trailers and TV spots lacking studio logos altogether.
You probably couldn’t make it PG due to to a couple of things, but having seen it, no reason kids 11 and up or so couldn’t watch it.
MPAA have given it PG-13 as well (equivalent of our M)
Consicering every MGM from when Amazon took them over is a Amazon Original if you think about..I’m not surprised.
Worth seeing in at the picture theatre, or wait for it to hit streaming?
I think it’s worth seeing in the theatre for the scale of it (I saw it on IMAX) - visually, it’s stunning.
As a film, I preferred The Martian of the two Andy Weir adaptations but enjoyed this.
Shame I live in the sticks, IMAX isnt really an option here ![]()
VMax at least?
There’s no VMax where he is either. In fact, no big cinema chains have been around since the days of 9-8 TV. And one former cinema is left to rot…
A breakout for several other actors, some became stars:
Jared Leto (Academy Award winner), Joshua Jackson, Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville), Rebecca Gayheart and Tara Reid. Also had prolific African American stage actress Loretta Devine and iconic ‘Freddy Kruger’ actor Robert Englund.–
Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary has scored north of $80m in North America alone, becoming the studio’s biggest ever domestic opening excluding sequels/franchises (such as Bond), second biggest since COVID just pipped by Oppenheimer and one of the largest of the past decade:
temporary deal as well, Amazon MGM are setting up their own international distribution operation. Pretty sure the Sony deal finishes halfway through this year, or maybe into 2027?
Project Hail Mary was brilliant too. Didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. Shame IMAX Melbourne couldn’t get a 70mm print.
Edit: actually Project Hail Mary is the last film in the Sony deal, but so far unknown as to where Amazon MGM are setting up their own distribution. Sony might continue here.
I wonder if there’ll be a home entertainment release such as 4K UHD discs and if so who’ll distribute it, perhaps Sony as well? Like Warners who did both internationally for MGM (and via Roadshow here including Bond re-releases) since 2020 up until last year.
I’d expect, given the box office trajectory and cost of the film, the windowing could be longer, like Avatar 2 was for example. Wouldn’t surprise me if PHM didn’t hit digital rental (and physical media) until after a few months, Prime Video (and Foxtel) until 6 months and FTA TV after 2+ years, with theatrical which could very well go for many many weeks, especially with word of mouth and looking at the ‘sleeper’ nature of Weir’s 2015 The Martian.
I think it’d be through All Interactive. They have the 4K release for Fallout Season 2 scheduled (shifted from Roadshow/WB for Season 1) and I doubt that’s via Sony.
I wonder what the back cover looks like for the MGM releases via Sony. Haven’t picked any up but Mercy is supposed to be out soon so that might give us a clue whether Sony is licensing to AID on behalf of MGM or MGM is dealing with them directly.
I suspect they’ll take some consideration and care, given especially 4K, as I’m sure many would like to seek that out and play it on a massive screen or projector in their house, could generate quite a bit of extra money for the studio. It’s next best to not having your own IMAX or cinema theatre available I guess! Such is the grand scale and spectacle of PHM which deserves to be viewed in such.
Amaze amaze amaze
Really enjoyed the film especially how closely it stayed to the excellent book. There was one added scene near the end that we had speculated about whether anything like it would be included.
Project Hail Mary opened at No.1 in Australia with $6.15 million on 628 screens.
Worldwide the movie earned US$140 million.
