For me it was Star Wars, the first movie I saw that wasn’t a kid’s movie.

This is the movie that Tom Hanks was in Australia for when he and his wife tested positive for COVID-19.

Can’t re-open until new releases start appearing again, and considering the politics of Hollywood I can’t imagine that’s going to be anytime soon.

I believe the plan is for cinemas to reopen with the films that had already been playing when the lockdown started. They’re still working out how social distancing will work.

Plus The Astor airs classic films most of the time anyway.

25 April 2021 for Oscars and the BAFTAs will be delayed until 11 April.

Next year’s Golden Globe Awards have also been postponed, and will take over the date originally intended for the Oscars.

Got an email from Hoyts yesterday that its cinemas would reopen tomorrow (July 2). However, due to the new localised lockdowns imposed by the Victorian Government, Hoyts complexes at Highpoint, Watergardens and Broadmeadows will have to stay shut until at least July 29.
Village cinemas at Airport West will also be affected by the new stay-at-home orders.

Cinemas in metropolitan Melbourne and Shire of Mitchell will have to close again from midnight tomorrow (July 9) for at least six weeks, as the Victorian Government reintroduced stage 3 lockdown for the region. Cinemas in regional areas will be allowed to stay open.

I wonder what this could mean for the future of the cinema chains in Australia, if such agreements are made here.

The other US cinema chains and the other Hollywood studios are expected to have their own negotiations. Except Disney, who apparently don’t want early on-demand digital releases.

I think it will depend on the movie. They could extend a theatrical season for a big budget blockbuster compared to a mid budget love story.

AMC and Hoyts share common ownership (Wanda of China), so maybe the deal could expand down here, but it’s not direct ownership.

Marvel movie Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings has resumed production in Sydney after it was delayed for more than four months due to COVID-19. An elaborate set is currently under construction in western Sydney. In one photo you can see what looks like Prospect Reservoir in the background.

With cinemas across Victoria to close from Thursday under the latest lockdown, people will be missing out on new releases big and small, and cinema chains will have to extend theatrical seasons so Victorians can catch up on what the rest of country have already seen, when the likes of Village and Hoyts reopen in September.

Fortunately there’s very few American films coming out currently (Tenet being the exception towards the end of the month), so it won’t make a big difference.

Disney’s remake of Mulan will be released next month as well.
