Movies on TV

Saw this at the cinemas with a close friend, was blown away with how unexpectedly good it was. It received acclaim and became a sleeper hit at the box office. It could do quite well this Friday night and I feel it is the right sort of timeslot for this.

Interesting to note that Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas starred in Knives Out, two years before No Time to Die.

Nine getting in on Seven’s turf with a midday movie premiere from Lifetime.

I don’t recall Nine airing movies like this in recent times.

Channel 9 Saturday night staple Hairspray airing on 10Peach tonight. Quite weird they’ve picked this up. They seem to have picked up some more mainstream movies of late for shake ajd peach but bizarrely have some aversion to airing them on the main channel which is subject to endless repeats and encores on fridays and Saturdays.

Well they don’t have Ellen anymore. They used to air movies at 1pm for a while though.

Bit of a stretch for a 14 year old title :joy:

Yep, as previously noted here some time back, Network 10 have been airing titles from Roadshow for a few years now, Nine seem to get some back though after 10 have run them a couple of times.

Sorry, I meant tv movies

There’s another tv movie The Wrong Patient premiering next Friday at midday on Nine. Something has happened for Nine to be airing these movies. Normally they usually end up on Seven.

I think @TV.Cynic has said in the past, when queried by MS users, that the made-for-TV midday movies on 7 sort of go up and down, but recently noted it was on-par with whatever was on 9 (or sometimes might even be ahead). There’s obviously a reason why Seven have kept them there for so long.

Often they’re clearly aimed at a very specific demographic (e.g.) stay at home mums (you just have to look at some of the hilarious cliched titles/plots).

So if Nine have done some sort of agreement to get some titles to air, they must have seen some benefit in doing so, I mean maybe there was a lack of reality encores or other entertainment repeats in the pipeline?

Picked this up at chance at Target or somewhere around Christmas for cheap last year, watched it not long after with a few people. Fairly run of the mill as crime-thrillers go, definitely a vehicle for the now typecast Liam Neeson. However if you like his thrillers over the past 13 years, plus a bit more graphic than usual, you’ll enjoy this. Will definitely suit a channel like 7mate for encore/repeats. Think it’s another cherry pick from Canal+, same as Knives Out which first ran the other night.

Noticed Nine’s latest airings of the Bond movies seem to be omitting the United Artists opening logos, which is usually after the MGM one and before the gun barrel sequence. I’m guessing they’ve removed it for timing / continuation flow purposes, which Nine and 10 have been following Seven’s lead the last couple of years (the former two used to air full end credits and logos previously).

Nine’s master tapes had the silver looking UA version from the early 2000s (first seen on the 2006 re-release DVDs). Except for “Octopussy” and “A View To A Kill” (due to being under a different titled MGM/UA banner originally), “Licence to Kill” (which kept the original UA logo from the time) and “Goldeneye” (which kept the original mid-late 90s ‘sparkling/stars’ UA logo - also seen on Seven’s old airings and the original DVD collection from 2000-2002).

Nine seem to have got rights to some WB titles the past month or so, it’s the first time they’ve aired a WB title after being on another network (either returning or for new), so they must’ve struck some deal. Wonder if this means anything for Seven’s WB output.
Also, as noted previously, Seven struck a deal with Sony again (and this time including vod rights for 7Plus), after some titles went back to Nine, after previously being lost to Seven.

So lots of licencing changes / jumping of titles back-and-forth between networks going on.

That has been happening for the past 6-8 years. It shocks me how often movies are changing networks these days. My theory is it is cheaper to let them go after a certain period then pick them back up after some time off.

Well, they’re back to showing real films, at least for next Friday.

The loyal midday tv movie audience on Seven is probably not going to switch to Nine for similar tv movies on random Fridays. At best, it cannibalises the audience for both channels.
