Rented this in late 2023, just missed its theatrical run, thought it was really good. Not your typical rom-com, it was quite well done and had a sweet, innocent, feel-good nature to it. Plus produced by Jennifer Lawrence as well as starring, for which she was also nominated for a Golden Globe. Was well received by critics and did pretty well at the box office. It had a run on svod, Binge from memory. Wonder if Seven will have a promo, they don’t usually these days for the later Saturday movie, though it is earlier (9:30) and a FTA premiere.

Blockbuster movies aren’t delivering ratings like they used to as Barbie on Nine last night couldn’t even average 300,000 national viewers in a 7.30pm timeslot with not a lot of competition.

The week before Jurassic World Dominion did better with 361,000 on Seven. Much earlier in the year Seven was having some success with movies like Red (384,000), Jason Bourne (370,000), The Bourne Legacy (376,000) and The Bourne Supremacy (375,000) and a couple of other classic movies.

But recently the numbers have been below 300,000.

Also 10 were showing what looked like an old tape, possibly 15+ years old from when they got the Paramount output after 2003, the picture was panned and scanned filling the 16:9 screen. And the general quality, picture but especially sound was also poor.

The Core is originally anamorphic scope, 2.35:1

Seven and Nine are also guilty of this very thing, from what I’ve observed when they’re playing old Disney and Roadshow files. Back when studios were providing prints without letter or pillarboxing for the benefit of 4:3 standard screens, even still after digital and HD in the later 2000s. Early 2010s things definitely started to change with anamorphic becoming more prevalent on FTA, with many by then opting for widescreen televisions.

This should increase Nine’s shares, always does very well.

Interesting though that they’re on 9Go! this time, instead of the usual 9Gem. Also wonder if main channel will be used for the more recent Daniel Craig entires as it often is.

And wonder why they don’t do double-headers on Fridays - Sundays, where they start the movies at 7:30pm instead of 8:30pm and 9Gem had previously done this. They’ve opted for random late films instead.

On Friday Night On Nine/9Gem It’s Air Force One With Harrison Ford And Gary Oldman.

Yes, it appears Nine will be showing this Disney thriller for the first time on Friday (9Gem in Sydney and Brisbane). Once a Seven staple, first run around the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Also briefly on Ten for a few years in 2018.

Wonder what print they’ll get, there’s been several.

Seven’s master is rather terrible, a 16:9 full screen matted or panned and scanned, severley altering the Super 35mm Zeiss lens shots and the interior and exterior panning and action scenes up in the sky on the plane, it almost looks blatantly cropped.
The visual and audio quality never seemed great either, despite it being a later file from 2006 give or take (as it had the Buena Vista TV logo with the Disney castle at the end), probably for HD TV era. Unsure whether this was native or upscaled HD.
They played two versions too, one with the lengthy opening titles and theme, the other cutting to the opening parachute scene (usually for m/c prime time).
I’d imagine Foxtel’s was too. Can’t recall what Ten’s was, but I’d think it’d be anamorphic by then.

The early 2000s DVD transfer (of a poorer scan - which I have somewhere and should dust off) is even the original 2.39:1 anamorphic widescreen, as is the Disney Plus stream and other VOD services.

The latest transfer is a 4K scan of the original Kodak negative in HDR 10 with 2160p quality, Dolby Atmos and 2.40:1 aspect for that 2018 physical release, but released again in Dolby Vision a couple of years ago.

Highly unlikely Nine will have received any of the modern copies though and the re-masters were a different studio (Sony) who handle the film in North America. As we know, Disney (who handled it overseas - technically “Buena Vista International” like the movie Unbreakable as it was a split distributor and international) no longer release physical media in Australia anyway, including Fox.

Still a fab movie and one of my guilty pleasure favourites. Get off my plane!

Will Nine Air The Movie With The Columbia Logo At The Start?

There isn’t any, at least not distributed by Disney (you’d probably have to be in North America).

It has the Buena Vista International logo, followed by the Beacon Pictures logo, then into the opening credits. And after the end credits ends with the same logos in reverse, plus on TV prior to 2009 the Buena Vista International Television logo as well.
