Shocking timeslots, the programmers must think they’re not going to rate much

edit

Not helped by having later starts this year because of Seven and Nine’s 30min 7pm shows (first movie used to start at 7pm), initially current affairs specials due to coronavirus and choosing the first movies with marathon run times.

They also edited out some language in the neighbourhood meeting scene.

This is a Nine premiere. Previously aired on 10 many times, FTA premiere was on Wednesday February 6 in 2013. Last aired on “Eleven” on Sunday October 14 in 2018. Licenced by Paramount.

A fairly solid TV newsroom rom-com with the great Harrison Ford and genre go-to gal Rachel McAdams.

Seven premiere of "Cliffhanger’’, latest copy provided has a Studiocanal opener added and wide-screen upscaled HD

That’s pretty poor. Surely Cliffhanger would have a native HD version?

It might’ve been?

There was a midday movie a few weeks back that was a widescreen upconvert. Shouldn’t be happening these days

Should be in native HD or the old 4:3

Would only be a narrow window of years of acquisition that you’d expect any widescreen upconverts - perhaps 2001 - 2006?

Yeah I can’t remember the name but it was from the early 2000s

Probably My Mothers Killer or Nightmare Teacher or Dad’s Secret Daughter as these fluff fillers seem to title themselves :joy:

Schindler’s List on 9Gem tonight:

Seven and SBS previously aired the film commercial free.

Probably back when M-rated movies had to start after 8:30pm. With ads, it would have finished way past midnight.

Not sure about the SBS airing but it’s to my understanding that the November 26, 1997 premiere of Schindler’s List on Seven ran from 8.30pm until 11.45pm.

Other random facts about that airing two months shy of 23 years ago:

*Due to the movie running so long, only a short 5 minute or so edition of Seven Nightly News: Late Edition aired that night. Kylie Gillies presented this.
*Telstra paid $1 Million to heavily advertise before and after Seven’s premiere airing of Schindler’s List.
*While the movie rated very highly on a national basis, Nine’s telecast of the Star City Casino Opening Spectacular received more viewers in Sydney.

Was going to mention this the other day, forgot to post. This is a Nine premiere. Licenced by NBC-U.

“Schindler’s List” (1993) last aired on SBS at 8:40pm on Friday April 7 in 2017, it first aired on SBS on Saturday March 26 in 2016. It also previously ran on Seven (two different licencing contracts), in the late 90s (FTA premiere) and again from Wednesday June 16 in 2010 (when Seven had the NBC-U output). It aired on Seven for the final time at 9:40pm on Wednesday June 13 in 2012.

Interestingly, I don’t believe 10 ever aired it (even though they had the NBC-U output in the 90s and 2000s), possibly because Seven secured first run rights but maybe because of the run time/B&W/demographics of 10 at that time.

At a run time of over 3 hours (without ads) it is one of the longest Hollywood movies ever released. Its TV airings here have all started at 8:30pm (or after) because of its “M” classification and due to its thematic content seemingly impossible to accommodate at a “PG” level.

It is considered by many as one of the greatest movies of all time, also a different type of movie for Steven Spielberg. It garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards. And all this nearly 30 years ago. It was also essentially Liam Neeson’s breakout role, gaining prominence again years later in the “Star Wars” prequels and again further years later as an action star in the “Taken” trilogy and movies like “The Grey”, “A Walk Among The Tombstones”, “Non-Stop” and “The Commuter” (which is airing again on Seven next week).

If Nine could’ve edited the movie to PG and started it between 6pm and 7:30pm tonight, I’m sure they would have loved to! A 4+ hour TV run, especially into late night and for these days is a very tough ask. They’d be hoping for good ratings or share.

2002 hospital thriller “John Q” starring Denzel Washington, Anne Heche and James Woods will have its Seven premiere Friday week.

It was previously licenced here by Roadshow and aired on Nine (last on 9Go! in Nov last year), now rights are back with Warner Bros.
