Big fan of Denise but wish the ABC had left this iconic programme alone! Nobody could ever live up to Ruth Cracknell and Gary McDonald. I tried to watch Season 1 but gave up after a few episodes.

Mother and Son returns to ABC this September with more laughs and chaos

The ABC is pleased to announce the highly anticipated second season of
Mother and Son returns, lighter and brighter with a fresh injection of fun, on Wednesday 24 September at 8:30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Comedy favourite Denise Scott returns as the delightfully unpredictable Maggie, joined once again by the sharp and charismatic Matt Okine as her long-suffering son Arthur. With Matt also back at the helm as writer and re-creator, this dynamic duo is set to deliver another season packed with heart, hilarity, and the kind of chaos only the Boye family can bring.

Produced by Wooden Horse and directed by Shaun Wilson, known for his work on ABC favourites Rosehaven and Frayed, the all-new Mother and Son returns with more misadventures as mischievous Maggie continues to derail the life of her neurotic son Arthur, who’s still stuck at home and struggling to grow up.

As Arthur flounders through freelance journalism, dating apps, and spicy snacks, Maggie sets out to make her 70s unforgettable—whether it’s joining a rogue knitting group or chaining herself to a fig tree. Meanwhile, their scheming sister Robbie (Angela Nica Sullen) has big plans for Maggie’s nest egg and the family home.

Joining the Boye family as they stumble through chaos, comedy, and community in this hilariously dysfunctional second season are returning favourites Virginia Gay, Zara Tate and Jean Kittson, along with special guest appearances from Heather Mitchell (Love Me), Mark Lee (Gallipoli), David Collins (The Umbilical Brothers) and many more.

Production credit: Commissioned by the ABC. Mother and Son is a Wooden Horse production. Major production investment from the ABC and Screen Australia. Financed with support from Screen NSW. Based on the Original Series by Geoffrey Atherden. Re-created & written by: Matt Okine, Sarah L. Walker, Tristram Baumber and Tim Spencer. Produced by Jude Troy. Co-Producer Alexandra Cameron. EPISODE 5

WEDNESDAY 22 OCTOBER 8.30 PM

Arthur has spent the past eight weeks waiting on Maggie hand and foot, after she slipped and injured her ankle in a damp patch under a ceiling leak.

Now, just as Maggie’s moon boot is coming off and Arthur is about to ship her off to Robbie’s house for a few days of peace, Arthur takes a tumble – right through the damp patch!

Denise Scott has a chat with Benjamin Law in Good Weekend magazine inside The Age and SMH today (paywall).

Denise: I was amazed at how terrified I felt of death. But then I got to thinking really practically and I was quite amazed. I thought about John, my partner, and how I was totally at peace with the idea of him hooking up with someone else. And then I just went on this journey: “Well, how am I going to feel about her living in our house?” Then I thought, “Well, if she can clean up the place, good on her …”

Benjamin: [Laughs] Denise, this woman doesn’t even exist!

Denise: I know! And then I got to the point where I thought, “What if she gets all the money I’ve earnt?” Because the only thing I don’t want is for anyone other than my children to benefit from that. So the next day, I said to John, “You know that money we have just sitting in the bank? Why don’t we just give it to our kids today?” And we did. I thought I was going to die, and I didn’t want his new girlfriend to get the money. But I couldn’t explain that to anyone.

EPISODE 6 FINAL

WEDNESDAY 29 OCTOBER 8.30 PM

Maggie’s 70th is upon us and after experiencing a particularly worrying brain fade, she decides this year’s birthday will be “one to remember”.

Not wanting to organise two birthdays in quick succession, Robbie convinces Arthur to have a joint birthday with Mum.

But as the date draws closer, Arthur can’t quite put his finger on it, but something about it isn’t quite sitting right…

The Season Two Final aired tonight on the ABC. I liked tonights episode and I had a few chuckles. The show has been a bit of a hit and miss with The storylines and jokes.

During the end credits, they showed a few outtakes, which was good and different.

I do wonder of a third season will air?

More miss than hit. Very few laughs.
