Another close results on Monday with Seven one point clear of Nine in network and main channel shares with the 7.30 time slot especially competitive.

It was the final of the Lego Masters Grand Masters season with close to 600k tuning in for the “Winner Announced” and 576,000 for the rest of the final. That was a season-high result for the show though the lowest for any final of the franchise in linear viewing. Last year the final had 688,000 and 669,000; 2021 had 1,001,000 and 933,000 while 2020 had 1.43 million. The average linear audience was just under 500k for the overnights lifting to 560k in consolidated.

Meanwhile, the second episode of MasterChef’s season managed 557,000, well down from the launch. The result compared to the second episode of the previous season that had 436,000.

Seven managed to get two entries out of The Coronation Concert with 535,000 and 584,000 for the “Final”. The Concert Final ranked 12th in 25-54 with the rest of the show 20th. Nine got some good numbers for a 9pm viewing of The Concert – beating its commercial rivals as well as the 12 noon broadcast.

Earlier, Seven News picked up another win with a clean sweep of markets and a 200k lead over Nine. The Sydney result was that bulletin’s best result this year. That followed The Chase posting its highest audience of the year at 5.30 and 200k ahead of Hot Seat. Home and Away posted a rare +500k result.

Most of ABC’s line-up was on par with its usual results though Australia Story was down 50,000 on the previous week. ABC News did well to top 600k.

Another competitive night. Seven’s broadcast of the Coronation Concert definitely took some viewers away from MasterChef. Not sure why Seven coded the Coronation Concert into two segments though.

I thought more people may have tuned into Q&A this week to see if Stan Grant would either apologise or double down on his offensive comments over the weekend but there is no sign of it in the Top 20.

Wonder if it will even scrape into the Top 30?

I agree that there’s a time and a place to discuss the suffering for Indigenous people and at the start of the coronation was not the place to do it. However, stating the facts is not “offensive”. It may have impacted viewers staying tuned into the ABC’s coverage of the coronation because they didn’t want to hear that sort of discussion on the day they wanted to watch the coronation, but I doubt it would make a difference to Q&A. The subject matter covered by each Q&A show might impact ratings though.

I suspect the B-Grade performers at the Coronation Concert were a reason for the very average ratings.

Maybe at a funeral but I don’t see why a coronation would be the wrong time to bring it up. It gives perspective amidst the obsequiousness of the media and this “celebration” and might explains how the Royal family have accumulated all that wealth.

In the usual pattern Seven won the three AFL markets and Nine won NRL cities. Nine won the key demos. 10 was second in 25-54 and Seven was second in 16-39.

I didnt see it so I don’t know how much they delved into it. If it was a news program or current affairs program that was discussing it as an issue then yes, go for it. But if it’s coverage of the coronation and that’s what people tuned in to see, then i can understand why they flicked channels.

I doubt there was a high care factor either way. Even the hard core Q&A fans of old don’t bother with it now.

Ranked 29th, down 25k from the previous week but it has been worse.

This is inherently a news event. Our head of state is being crowned and considering the circumstances with the Voice referendum this year it is important to note this is the same institution responsible for Australia’s colonisation and atrocities committed against Indigenous Australians.

Of course the ABC could have uncritically covered the coronation but they’re primarily a news channel not entertainment.

B-Grade ??

  • Lionel Ritchie & Katy Perry both have Vegas Residency. Take That still fill stadiums
I think it is more that it was on YouTube ad free from 8am in its entirety and segmented by performers so you only needed to watch the sections you were interested in (5-20 minutes bites rather than 2 hrs with ads)
I watched it on my laptop while working in the morning…
and Channel 9 showed it earlier in the day.

Yes I tend to agree with you because despite all the publicity, last nights figures prove that Stan is fairly irrelevant these days

… this is the same institution responsible for Australia’s colonisation …

No colonisation, no Stan!
No colonisation, no me.
No colonisation, no Wally

When it’s put that way, to criticize colonisation seems pointless.

Just because colonisation helped Australia to become what it is today, doesn’t mean the act of it (and all the things that occurred back in history) isn’t above criticism. That’s a debate for another time though.

I’m no monarchist, but it is probably more acuate to blame the Brittish Government of the time rather than the Monarch of the time.
From memory, absolute Sovereign rule ended in 1649 or thereabouts, well before Australia was colonised.
