SCOTT AND OWEN WIN

FIRST EVER LEGO® MASTERS GRAND MASTERS

image

Larrikin best mates from Western Australia, Scott and Owen, were tonight crowned the worthy winners of LEGO® Masters Grand Masters on Channel 9.

The impressively creative duo won $100,000 and the coveted title of the first ever LEGO® Masters Grand Masters champions.

In tonight’s Grand Finale the remaining three teams were given 28 hours to build whatever they wanted to. And they didn’t disappoint with the most impressive builds in LEGO® Masters history.

Alongside the other Grand Masters contestants and 200 members of the public, judge Ryan “Brickman” McNaught and host Hamish Blake – who had half a vote – determined the winners of Grand Masters 2023.

For Scott and Owen it was redemption after finishing second in their previous season of LEGO® Masters. Whilst they triumphed over Alex and Caleb and Joss and Henry, Brickman was hugely impressed by all three finalists, but Scott and Owen clearly deserved the crown. After nearly cracking under the pressure in Sunday’s Carousel elimination challenge, they bounced back with a vengeance.

Scott and Owen were inspired by the Grand Finale creations of past winners to make Titan Atlas. Their mighty Titan, a figure from Greek mythology, holds a giant city above his head as he stumbles through sheets of rock above a sea of lava. Using a technique called implied motion, they captured the moment of Atlas falling and trying to keep hold of the city with no supporting mechanism.

Joss and Henry, previous winners of LEGO® Masters, stretched their creativity and took a huge risk with their final build. They created a fantasy world: the serene and captivating Forest Guardian and the Traveller, where a traveller stumbles into a peaceful forest, greeted by the guardians of the woods.

The third pairing, Caleb and Alex, runners up in Season 4, impressed with their humorous character build, capped by King of the Jungle, a huge lion wearing a crown and sitting on a throne with other animals offering gifts to the imposing jungle leader.

Scott said: “The whole Lego® Masters experience has been an absolutely mind blowing and heart filling experience. We gave this competition and our final build everything we had, we hope everyone loved being with us along this journey.
To come away with the win in this level of competition has left me speechless, so I’ll just say thanks. Firstly, to all the crew, big thanks for all of your help at keeping us grounded along the way, to all the contestants past and present, thank you for your love and to everyone at home for tuning in, thank you.”

Owen said: “We knew going in that the level of the final builds would be above and beyond anything we’d seen yet. This put us into an all or nothing mindset, to try for something ridiculous both creatively and technically in an effort to stand out. This meant a load of risks, many sleepless nights and hopefully an entertaining watch for all at home. In the end all the risks paid off and I could not be prouder of the legacy we have now left on the competition.”

Brickman said: “There’s always a big risk in naming a series “Grand” masters, as you’re relying on the competitors to really bring skills and techniques that have never been seen before, and gosh were lucky, because they did that and more, none more so than our Winners, Scott and Owen who were huge risk takers and really did live up to the hype”.

LEGO® Masters: Grand Masters comes from producers Endemol Shine Australia (a Banijay Company). The series is adapted from an original UK format from Tuesday’s Child Productions and The LEGO® Group.

I think Nine will give Lego Masters one more season. Although the show’s overnight and consolidated ratings were down on previous years, it was still doing well in demos and Total TV.

The Australian reports Lego Masters has been rocked by a sexual harassment scandal. Rebecca Smith, who worked as a producer on three seasons of the show, is suing Endemol Shine Australia and and associate producer Dave Holder for $150,000, claiming she was denied a safe workplace and treated unfavourably because she was a woman. She also alleged she was the victim of many unwanted advances and that the producer referred to Lego sorters as “babes”.

I went to the annual Brickvention at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building today.

Among the displays were models built by Dawn Sloboda, who competed in season 2 of the US version of Lego Masters in 2021 with her sibling Jack.

I reckon Dawn may be in Australia to take part in the upcoming season, Lego Masters: Australia v The Rest of the World.

The promo for this year launched on Nine last night. I wonder why there’s no press release here yet and it’s not available on their socials either.

I think there will be a press release closer to Easter.

PREMIERES SUNDAY, APRIL 14, AT 7.00PM

Logie-winning LEGO® Masters Australia is back for its sixth season with a world first global showdown.

In a momentous Olympics year, it’s “Australia vs The World” at LEGO® Masters with four brand-new teams from Australian taking on four International LEGO® counterparts from Denmark, Germany, France and USA.

Gold Logie winner Hamish Blake returns as host, alongside judge Ryan “Brickman” McNaught. Special guest Sophie Monk joins the dynamic duo for the most demanding challenges we have seen in a season so far.

The international teams have competed in their own local LEGO® Masters competition before, but now they’re up against four Australian teams who comprise the brightest and best new builders in the country, including a Lego store manager, a Lego art designer and an official Lego master builder.

The Aussies have an undeniable home-ground advantage and come with the added benefit of knowing exactly what’s required in a LEGO® Masters Australia competition.

This season there will be special guest appearances from Australian radio presenter and comedian Michael “Wippa” Wipfli and Jordy Hocking from Lego Masters Season 1. This year the challenges are more demanding than ever. They include LEGO® go kart racing, a spectacular window display challenge, fan favourite Is It Fake? with a parisian twist and celebrating 85 years of Batman.

LEGO® Masters: Australia vs The World will host the ultimate showdown, with contestants reaching incredible new levels of creativity as the most skilled brick artisans on Earth delve into the endlessly expanding brick pit, striving to make their country proud.

With this year’s brick pit ready to go with more than 4 million bricks on offer, viewers can expect the most unbelievable builds in LEGO® TV history as teams build to their hearts’ content for the most prized trophy of all.

Ben (24) & Eric (21)

These friends from Newcastle bonded over their love for bricks whilst working at the LEGO® store together. Spending 20 hours a week building, they have a particular interest in custom vignettes. They are ready to take their skills out of the LEGO® retail space and into the Masters arena.

Dianne (59) & Shane (38)

With a connection forged through a shared love of creativity, competition and enchantment, this Disney princess and mathematics whizz spark joy not just in their builds, but in everything they do.

Solo builders Charlie and Haley will be a force to be reckoned with when paired for the first time in this season’s battle of the best. This quirky Victorian duo are high-energy, ultra-competitive and ready to attack every challenge with gusto. Bricks play an important part in their relationship, with the loveable couple meeting years ago at a LEGO® themed adult scavenger hunt. With Sam specialising in digital LEGO® artwork and Emilio having a keen eye for aesthetics and colour coordination, this is a duo to watch out for.

Krystle (36) & Michelle (44)

LEGO® building superstars Krystle and Michelle represent America in this season’s intercontinental competition. Both hailing from Texas, the pair are teaming up for the first time. With both thriving in their personal lives and LEGO® approaches, they are ready to take their building capabilities to the next level on LEGO® Masters Australia.

Camille (34) & Caroline (22)

To celebrate the Olympic games in France, semi-finalists in Season 3 of LEGO® Masters France, siblings Camille and Caroline are back for another crack at LEGO® glory – on the other side of the world. After placing third in 2022, they are hoping that with an extra year of building under their belts, 2024 might see them inching higher up the brick totem pole and into the winning position.

Peter (41) & Ida (33)

Hailing from the original home of LEGO®, Danish team Peter and Ida have one strategy when it comes to tackling the Australian competition: have fun. Quirky, bright, playful friends, the duo were runners up on Season 2 of LEGO® Masters Denmark. Arriving in Australia for the first time, Ida and Peter are excited to have another opportunity at taking out the LEGO® Masters title.
