Monday night saw the season launch of multiple shows across networks including three commercial reality franchises, a new host for A Current Affair plus the return of several ABC favourites.

Overall network shares reflected the results with Nine the big winner almost nine points clear thanks to the season debut of Married At First Sight. With linear and catch up to come, the numbers look great for the debut of the season as it ranked number three for the night with 840,000 metro viewers. That is almost as much as the combined audience for Seven and 10’s reality offerings and compares to 869,000 in 2022. While it is the lowest launch episode since 2018 it will no doubt be boost by a large 9Now live audience.

Earlier in the night Nine News got a bit closer to Seven than recently but only won Sydney. That followed a poor performance by a new episode of Hot Seat in the afternoon, almost 200k behind The Chase. However, by 7pm Nine was ahead of Seven with 639,000 tuning in for Ally Langdon’s first ACA show. That is the show’s best number since November and compares to 665,000 for the equivalent show in 2022. Later, Nine also got some viewers for their one off royal special.

Seven got off to a good start with another winning result for news at 6pm. That followed a new episode of The Chase recording its best result of the year. Home and Away then delivered +500k with its best result since this season’s launch. Then followed the debut of the first season of Australian Idol for Seven with a disappointing 413,000 to land fourth at 7.30pm. The result compares to Seven’s offering last year of short run The Voice Generations that had 529,000 in the equivalent timeslot. In 25-54 Idol was 8th.

For ABC the return of Four Corners, Media Watch and Q&A to Monday nights delivered the best Monday share of the year for the network. That followed ABC News delivering its highest rating of the year so far to be number one at 7pm. Back Roads was up 146k on the previous week along with 7.30 that also performed well. While Q&A missed the top 20, it benefitted from the big lead in and improved on last year’s results on a Thursday.

Over on 10, the new season of Australian Survivor landed third at 7.30 with the show’s lowest launch episode to date. The linear audience of 447,00 compares to 2022’s launch that was the previous lowest on 608,000. The show ranked better in the key demos however where it was second for the night. The good demos helped 10 to rank second in all key demos.

So for the first night, it looks very similar to recent years with Nine probably dominating most nights early in the week, Seven with another missed opportunity to get off to a good start and 10 struggling but hoping for good demo numbers to deliver the advertisers.

Looks like another bumper season ahead for Married at First Sight, based on last night’s premiere figures which are just less than that of Survivor and Australian Idol combined. Even with BVOD and timeshifting, I doubt Survivor and Idol can make up any lost ground to MAFS.

The Australian Cricket Awards topped the pay TV ratings but flopped on 7mate, which led to the channel only posting a 1.6% share. Ratings for The Allan Border Story at No.4 will have to be adjusted as it included 26 minute overrun from the cricket awards lead-in.

The NFL conference championships on ESPN also made the pay TV top 20.

Seven will be slightly disappointed this morning that Australian Idol results weren’t a little bit more competitive against MAFS.

I can’t imagine the demo ratings for Australian Idol make for good reading. 7’s audience has increasingly skewed older.

On a different subject, those are good ratings for The Last of Us and well deserved.

Obviously 7 can’t just wave the white flag against MAFS and show nothing, but launching Idol on a different night would have given it more of a chance.

Still, surprised the novelty of Australian Idol coming back didn’t help it beat at least Survivor.

Survivor beating Idol? Wow.

Imagine if 10 had a powerful show at 6.30pm to cross promote. Survivor would do even greater numbers.

Seven wont be happy with figures this week for the Big Bash or Idol.

Home and Away had more people watching than Australian Idol lol.

This might just be me but I don’t think Cricket is the best audience to advertise idol, like the audience probably don’t align that much. So all those ads about idol during the cricket probably didn’t get much people to tune in

And who watches cricket on seven? It’s a male dominated sport, so was Idol really going to cut it?

Tennis marketed to the female market, pure gold to launch a show like MAFS.

Idol, which market is that playing too? The youth? The mums, the singles? Seven need to work out what and which market is watching the cricket and than figure out the rollout of Q1

For everyone that declared the bachelors a bomb, it was getting about the same as Idol in 25-54

With a fraction of the marketing budget

7 has a lot of useless older viewers that don’t make them any money

That is rough for Idol, I think 7 mostly did things right with a high quality promotion and big budget production. If Idol doesn’t pick up from here I think it will have consequences for the industries attitude towards big investments going forward.

They’ll be a lot more than slightly disappointed. Considering the amount of promotion Seven gave it over the last few months, they would have expected Australian Idol to attract far more than 413,000 viewers watching it as it aired.

Of course, one night isn’t a trend and we need to see how things settle over the next few nights. However, if things don’t improve, Seven will find themselves yet again in the same position they’ve been in over the last few years - another disappointing start to the ratings year.

Idol is a daggy old format and goes against both the sound of modern pop/Top 40 music and the discovery of said music.
I’m not sure what kind of Idol they’re actually looking for.

Given the months of endless promotion and money spent on getting big names out here, I think they would be more than slightly dissapointed.

There are two more BBL finals to go this week.

I think we’re now at a point where we can definitely blame the Summer sport platform Seven has relied on. During Summer Seven barely cracked 400K every night thanks to the BBL being a dud and even the Day-Night test wasn’t too flash either. The cricket has single-handedly ruined Seven’s start to each year, because they try to launch anything and it fails against MAFS which has the tennis fuelling its launch with decent ratings.

No body thought it would overtake MAFS… but I’m sure Seven was hoping for an overnight figure of around 600/700k. Unfortunately, I can see the show dipping under the 400k mark tonight until the live shows commence.

I don’t think you can totally blame cricket as a poor promotional base for Idol. Seven have had some many other high rating programs leading up to this week not to mention having the number one program practically every night in news. Also the number one afternoon programming as well as breakfast show and moring television. All potentially good for promotion. There are really no excuses.
