Mock Schedules

So, Angie would present the weather then straight into Flashpoint? Sounds clunky.

Well, yeah.

Either her weather segment at the end of Seven News Sydney or the opening of Flashpoint would be pre-recorded.

I have to agree, it looks all over the place. If I was having state based programs Monday to Friday, I would have the same host every night.

I think Mike Amor could present a Sydney edition and have Jacqui Felgate do Monday to Friday in Melbourne.

I would keep Angie Asimus as a back up host for a news based program I would title Daytime. Main host would be Ann Sanders with Angie Asimus hosting Fridays edition as well as possibly a Saturday edition, should the show be successful. I would call it Daytime as it not only fits in with the Sunrise brand, but you aren’t labelling it a morning, midday or afternoon program. Under my proposal, Seven would air it as close to live as possible (up to a 1 hour delay across the nation).

The other flaw I see in this proposal, Home and Away for 2 and a half hours on one night. Given the popularity of Home and Away, I would screen it 3 nights a week at 7pm for 1 hour (after 1 hour, I think viewers get bored). The network could get away with screening reality programs from 8pm. I would have no more than 2 blocks of 2 week breaks during the year, on non Olympic/Commonwealth Games years it would be at Easter and the last 2 weeks before the AFL/NRL grand finals

If I was launching a show, I would structure my news similar to Ten. A 1 hour edition follows by a 30 minute bulletin then Flashpoint. I would then screen a national bulletin on 7Mate at 6:30pm followed by my proposed Sportsworld program (which I previously listed for 5:30pm - I figure trying to squeeze this in as well would make it too busy and you would lose viewers before the start of the nights schedule). In Perth, at 6:30pm on 7Mate, you would repeat the 6:00pm component of Seven News.

Sportsworld could be encored after The Latest on the main channel Monday to Friday.

I would like to see the following changes at Ten next year.

  1. A revamp of the weekday morning and daytime schedule (6am to 5pm) and weekend morning schedule
  2. 10Peach become a comedy channel
  3. Original episodes of Neighbours moves to 10Bold at 6:30pm (after an encore of Bold And The Beautiful) with Bondi Rescue being reduced to 30 minutes.
  4. Infomercials currently screening on 10Peach moves to 10Bold
  5. Drama currently screening on 10Peach will move to 10Bold (with exception of Charmed, which I would move to 10Shake) and balanced with the current schedule to ensure 10Bold keeps its status as one of the top secondary channels
  6. Weekend Religious shows on Ten would move to 10Bold

If CBS were willing to spend money on News and entertainment, I would love to see something like this. News programs that conflict with live sports presentations would move to 10Bold

I know its unlikely but it would give Ten the edge leading into the evenings and showing at Ten News comes first. They could revive the catch cry ā€œAt Ten, News Comes Firstā€

Monday to Friday
3:00pm Ten News First
4:00pm Inside Edition Australia - structured more like ACA and Today Tonight
4:30pm Meet The Press - Each day 2 political guests - one federally and one from one of the state
5:00pm Ten News First
6:00pm Ten News @ 6
6:30pm The Project

Saturday
3:00pm Ten News First
3:30pm Ten Newsweek
4:00pm Inside Edition Weekend - weekend edition of this public affairs show

I would love to see 10 make some investment in news. And I think the idea of meet the press is great. I do just wonder if traditional news bulletins are the way to go for 10. There whole point has been over the last 10 years they are the place that delivers news differently. And I think this should be evident in their news bulletins.

Personally I think something like inside edition would be great for prime time like at 9:30. And meet the press at 10:00. But I see what you are doing in the afternoons.

It’s Viacom now. None of this will ever happen.

I didnt even think to go mid evening given the late night drop offs and the fact a lot of the time the reality shows finish late (at times up to half hour late) could impact on the time. But if Ten did manage their productions so that it didnt push later evening news programs back too late, then yes, 9:30pm to 10:30pm could work.

But again I dont think they will invest in production. I think the federal government should of imposed a condition of approval to produce more news content.

I wonder if WIN might try and utilise more of the SNOW content on the main channel. I wonder how say an encore of Paul Murray Live would go at say 4pm on WIN (and say moving Bold And The Beautiful to say 2pm (instead of ET)

If Channel 10 went up against 7 & 9

Weekdays:

6pm: News
7pm: The Project
7:30pm: Reality Show
9pm: Drama/Movie/News
11pm: Documentaries

Going up against 7 and 9 would require a lot of $$$, unfortunately 10s owners aren’t going to invest.

And why just go up against them? I think 10 needs to offer an alternative. Saturating a time slot with the same stuff just leads people to go elsewhere for an alternative.

A cheap alternative to the current offerings could be to screen Dr Phil at 4pm or do a Studio 10 highlights show called Studio 10 Express between 4pm and 5pm. The show could be repeated at 6am the next day

Well the current 10 schedule isn’t getting them anywhere. Never winning slots and constantly changing programs such as game shows and news. It’s time for them to change their schedule and go up against 7 & 9.

I think the biggest problem with the main channels of all 3 commercial television stations is that between 5pm and 9:00pm on a minimum of 4 nights a week the type of program shown is almost identical.

There are few variations from this and I feel this boredom and fatigue bleeds viewers from the main channels to secondary channels or streaming services.

The networks need to work on a strategy to arrest viewer decline and draw interest back to the networks.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, Seven and Ten aired scripted serial drama at 7:30pm a couple of nights a week. This is why I am thinking if Seven tried this with Home and Away it could work. If Seven though 3 X 1 hour episodes 3 nights a week over 37 to 39 weeks a year may be too much, then maybe cut production back to say 200 episodes a year and screen it 2 nights a week over say 50 weeks.

I really think that Seven if it wanted to could try a 7pm game show if it were to change its 7pm show and didn’t want to go down the current affairs path.

A relaunched Wheel Of Fortune or Sale Of The Century could work utilising familiar, uncomplicated formats and rules.

These are simply suggestions and I know other users may argue against this, but for the moment I think Seven, Nine and Ten are playing it safe, which in turn leads to regional affiliates like WIN, SCA and Prime following the same strategy

I know at least a majority of the affiliates are mandated to broadcast the same program schedule in their affiliation contracts. There is no ā€œstrategyā€ to it.

Prime Local News and Prime National News are NOT channel 7 shows last I checked, nor is WIN News or All Australian News, nor us Prime7’s upcoming special with Ray Martin.

These are only examples. Seven, Nine and Ten all have programming strategies, otherwise we would see any old rubbish that is cheap and nasty.

In the past networks have opted out of metropolitan programming, a good example is WIN not airing Family Feud and Sale Of The Century in its metropolitan timeslot.
