Mock Schedules

The Project is a fine program in what it aims to do, works very well for Ten programming. Just in order to attract a wider audience, it needs to remove the lefty/bleeding heart reporting that you see (which I am not sure is possible as that might just be who the people running Roving are likely sympathetic in that way, and it in itself fits in with a fair amount of Ten’s and ViacomCBS’ recent corporate actions).

Yeah the name could do with some work.

How about a reversal?

I think The Project needs to be after the main news though. The Project discusses the news of the day, to know the news of the day you need to watch the news first.

It’s why The Drum doesn’t work at 6pm. Needs to be after the news.

Fair enough… revised, could work if they have a strong lead in to the news. But this would take a lot more money to implement.

I actually really like this. Although I would prefer the project at 9:30

It could be done, but financially it would need a larger investment from CBSViacom. Clearly a massive investment would need to be added back into the newsrooms across the country, and a new game show doesn’t come cheap.

An idea to change the way news is presented on Seven and Nine.

Scrap early, daytime and late-night news bulletins, only keeping the flagship 6pm bulletin as it is. Introduce 10-minute local news, sport and weather windows, starting at 5.30am, then 6.00am, then every hour right through to the last bulletin at 11.00pm. This would eliminate the need for newsreaders on Sunrise and Today, with both Eddy and Alex being redeployed to reading the morning news bulletins on their respective networks.

An example schedule for Nine Sydney weekdays:

5.30am Nine News with Alex Cullen
5.40am Today with Karl & Ally + Brooke and Tim
6.00am Nine News with Alex Cullen
6.10am Today with Karl & Ally + Brooke and Tim
7.00am Nine News with Alex Cullen
7.10am Today with Karl & Ally + Brooke and Tim
8.00am Nine News with Alex Cullen
8.10am Today with Karl & Ally + Brooke and Tim
9.00am Nine News with Alex Cullen
9.10am Today Extra with David and Sylvia
10.00am Nine News with Alex Cullen
10.10am Today Extra with David and Sylvia
11.00am Nine News with Alex Cullen
11.10am Today Extra with David and Sylvia
12.00pm Nine News with Davina Smith
12.10pm TBA
1.00pm Nine News with Davina Smith
1.10pm TBA
2.00pm Nine News with Davina Smith
2.10pm TBA
3.00pm Nine News with Davina Smith
3.10pm Pointless
4.00pm Nine News with Davina Smith
4.10pm Tipping Point
5.00pm Nine News with Davina Smith
5.10pm Millionaire Hot Seat
6.00pm Nine News Sydney with Peter Overton
7.00pm A Current Affair
7.30pm Reality program
8.00pm Nine News with Lizzie Pearl
8.10pm Reality program continues
9.00pm Nine News with Lizzie Pearl
9.10pm Reality program continues
9.30pm TBA
10.00pm Nine News with Lizzie Pearl
10.10pm TBA
11.00pm Nine News with Lizzie Pearl
11.10pm TBA

The only concern would be ensuring there’s enough time for advertisements.

Nine have more chance of starting a dedicated News channel.

Viewers would get News fatigue watching that schedule and switch over to something else.

Shows like Today are designed to be dipped in and out (like the same viewers at 5.37 aren’t usually still watching at 8.37).

Nope.

Do you have anything more to contextualise rather than just “nope”?

My idea with this is to scrap news bulletins throughout the day (apart from 6pm), and viewers can instead tune in at the start of every hour for a 10-minute News fix. Can even be reverted to a 5-minute or 7-minute bulletin if need be.

I’m sorry but no. Won’t work.

Nice idea but realistically it will be a nightmare to implement unfortunately.

I love hourly news bulletins but the sort of people who do are going to be watching the ABC News Channel.

A nice idea but not at all practical to implement or from a viewing perspective. As you say, it takes out a lot of room for advertising which is the lifeblood of a commercial station. Also expecting viewers to just cop a 10-minute news interruption during a program such as in prime time is very counter-productive and will do nothing but send people changing channels. Also if you’re just doing 10 minute news spots in lieu of regular bulletins across the rest of the day you’re really just going to get the same stories every hour. There’s not much opportunity to cover a range of stories as a half-hour or hour bulletin would allow.

If you are going to do hourly news updates they would have to be brief, which is what already happens most of the time.

5- 10 News with Sandra Sully (national) [presented in a more conversational format ala old late news with more features]
6- 10 News (city name) [fast paced local news format, back to local single anchors]
7- prime time programming
9 - The Project
10 - prime time cont.
11.30 - Colbert

Much better than what they have.

Move The Project though to 9:30 so they can have reality 7-8:30 and HYBPA/Cheap Seats etc at 8:30pm.

Counter with this.

Looking at ratings figures, the 6pm news is almost the same as 5pm news these days, which will only continue to erode at 5pm. I propose national at 5pm to keep hold of the timeslot for news, and concentrate local news efforts on 6pm and 9.30pm, where more audience eyes are on and to try and keep hold of an audience post reality/comedy which just disappears to streaming. Also 6.30 edition of The Project really isn’t working, best to try and expand the core news audience. Again 5pm edition would contain more features and live interviews.

5.00: 10 News (national with Sandra Sully)
6.00: 10 News [City Name] (Local news)
7.00: The Project
7.30: / Primetime / (Reality tentpoles/comedies/any local drama)
9.30: 10 News [City Name] (Local News)
10.00: / Primetime cont / (US content, NCIS etc)
11.00: The Project (R)
11.30: Colbert
