Mock Schedules

Tackling an annual programing schedule that has been the subject of heavy criticism in recent years, ABC-TV on New Years Eve.

Of course even right now with 7 weeks to go, the ABC probably has at least a rough idea of what their NYE2017 programing schedule will be like so this mock schedule won’t make much of a difference. But if I was ever in charge of programing for an ABC-TV on December 31 with broadcast rights to Sydney’s New Years Eve fireworks, here’s what I’d put on:

7.30pm - ABC News: Year In Review.
8.30pm - NYE2017: Welcome + Children’s segment.
9pm - Family Fireworks.
9.15pm to 11.45pm - Rage ‘Year in Review’ type special, including playing video clips of the year’s top songs (perhaps as a countdown?).
11.45pm - Countdown to Midnight + New Years fireworks. Including localisation for the midnight displays (with Sydney fireworks live nationally on the ABC News channel) if contractually/financially possible.

While New Years Eve coverage seems to be one of those TV broadcasts that never pleases everyone, I think a schedule for December 31st like the above would keep most people reasonably satisfied.

Thoughts, comments and criticisms are welcome as per usual.

Channel 7 Melbourne (and probably Luke, for that matter) would have something to say about that.

4:30pm Everybody Loves Raymond

6:00pm Family Feud (NthNSW only) Frasier
6:30pm Neighbours

I think Judy and Ent Tonight should be on the opposite channels.

ET is perfect fodder for WIN 11.

Not sure any of WINs current presenters would want to be on air for 12.5 hours!

Another alternative I thought of was to move Tens entire 1pm to 4pm suite of programs to 11 (or Gold) and replace with

1:00pm Days Of Our Lives
1:55pm Young And The Restless
2:45pm Bens Menu
3:00pm Family Feud
3:30pm Alive And Cooking

11 (or Gold) would look like this
1:00pm The Living Room
2:00pm Entertainment Tonight
2:30pm Neighbours
3:00pm Judge Judy
3:30pm Everyday Gourmet

Channel Nine in February based on the recent promo
Sunday
7.00pm Married at First Sight
8.30pm 60 Minutes

Monday
7.30pm Married at First Sight
9.00pm Underbelly Files: Chopper

Tuesday
7.30pm Married at First Sight
9.00pm Travel Guides

Wednesday
7.30pm Married at First Sight
9.00pm Blue Planet II

Thursday
7.30pm Married at First Sight
9.00pm Date Night
or
7.30pm 20 to 1 / RBT
8.30pm Date Night

Don’t think it’s smart spreading the new content all over the place. Everyday Gourmet new episodes should remain on WIN with Judy. Create a year round schedule of new content. Repeats can be on GOLD.

ET would work on WIN 11 due to demographic target.

Thats partly why I suggested moving encores or repeats of shows like The Living Room to 11 or Gold…

WIN will want to air Alive And Cooking (maybe air it at 2:30pm) on the main channel, so something needs to go to another network or not screen at all…

If WIN did keep Days Of Our Lives and Young And The Restless on 11, then maybe they could air encores of Bold And The Beautiful and Neighbours at say between 11am and midday before WIN All Australian News, air Family Feud encore at 3pm… Also maybe the schedule listed for 11 could air on Gold between 11am and 3:30pm

The 6:30am screening of Family Feud could be replaced by Everyday Gourmet and 8am screening of Bold And The Beautiful with Alive and Cooking encore…

My suggestions are based on the assumption that CBS will do nothing with the daytime schedule for the time being

They probably won’t. Although there is some good content around…

How Ten could make One more relevant is to try and put more sport back on there… They could as an example do what 7Two does and air state-based games of state sport - possibly try to get the rights or joint rights with the ABC for the state based AFL competitions such as VFL, QAFL, SANFL, WAFL, TSL as well as possibly NSWFL and NTFL. Ten could air match of the round on ONE in its home state and air a 1 hour edited broadcast in the early to mid-late evening or the next morning.

As an example in Victoria it might be
Saturday
2pm VFL Match of The Day
5:00pm Operation Repo
5:30pm I Fish
6:00pm TSL Match Of The Day
7:30pm Scorpion
8:30pm SAFL Match Of The Day
10:00pm 48 Hours
11:00pm WAFL Match Of The Day
12:30am Home Shopping

Sunday 8am NSWFL Match Of The Day Saturday
9:30am Operation Repo
10:00am Fishing Australia
10:30am QAFL Match Of The Day Saturday
12:00pm A Taste Of Travel

But would their national ratings be higher with that line-up over what they have now?

I cannot say whether it might or might not… This is because the games shown would vary, it may increase it in some markets… but as NSW would air their state based game live and the VFL would be delayed… different games would have different ratings…

If Ten could convince each state to play their game half an hour earlier, then the schedule may vary and possibly slip in another show in the early evening… maybe then it could read

1:30pm VFL
4:30pm Operation Repo
5:00pm TSL
6:30pm Movie or David Attenborough
8:30pm Scorpion

Alternatively, in the case above, SANFL could be delayed to 9:30pm and then air a comedy such as Man With A Plan as a break up program before WAFL at 11:30pm and Home Shopping at 1am

A thought, under CBS overnights on the main channel and 11 could look like this

Ten
12:30am Late Show
1:30am Home Shopping
2:30am Lets Make A Deal (US edition) (or Home Shopping)*
3:30am The Price Is Right (US Edition)(or Home Shopping)*

2:00am Fishing Australia^ or Home Shopping
2:30am 48 Hours^ or Home Shopping
3:30am Charmed
4:30am Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
5:30am Religion

  • If Ten aired Home Shopping then the corresponding game show would air on 11 and vice versa
^If Ten Aired Home Shopping then 11 would air the alternate programs

Any opinions???
