Metro Radio Ratings - Survey 8, 2024

Some substantial movement still happening in Melbourne with Nova really starting to pierce into Fox.

Nova has overtaken Fox in overall share Mon-Fri and Weekends.
Jase & Lauren continue climbing. K&JO fall 0.1 points again.
Nova Drive now #1 too.

(Keeping in mind some of the shows have already wrapped up for the year)

I see in Brisbane 4BH is third and just 0.1 off being second. 4BC’s new breakfast is down 1.3 to just 3.3 to be the station’s worst shift by a long way. KIIS 97.3 drops below 10% with a gap opening up to the other FM commercials - biggest drop is 18-24 but its best shift is breakfast.

Great result for Nova Entertainment in Melbourne, with Smooth ranked No.1 and Nova 100 No.2 FM station on weekdays in this survey. Gold was a narrow third. Jase and Lauren powered ahead with a 11.5% share, second only in the breakfast slot behind 3AW. It was the only FM breakfast show to post double digit share.

Sammy J recorded a 0.5 increase for his final full survey. ABC Melbourne recorded its biggest increase in evenings (up 1.7) but lost ground in the other three daytime slots.

It’s also a great result for Nova Entertainment in Sydney, where Smooth took the #1 overall spot for the first time. Nova 96.9 also had a good increase as well.

They’re really starting to see the flow on effect of breakfast being #1. Nova are now 0.1 off being #1 for 40-54.

A question for the ratings historians - when was the last time an FM breakfast show rated 11.5 in Melbourne?

Jase & Lauren’s cume in Melbourne (717,000) is now (just) larger than Kyle and Jackie O’s cume in Sydney (716,000). Nova 100 are also now the highest cume station in the country.

Another drop for Kyle and Jackie O in Melbourne, dropping 0.1 share and another 24,000 cume despite claiming that they’ve improved the show. I’m skeptical if they really have made changes, but they’re going to need a hell of a lot more than Duncan telling journalists that there’s been a change if they want to get any upwards movement.

Did the publicity about Ray Hadley retiring push him back to number one and 2GB up? Let’s see what happens next year.

Shame that grub Hadley finishes on a high but happy to see Smooth number 1 and not 2GB

The LG&M experiment on 4BC was a complete waste of time. Now post-LG&M and back to a News Talk format, the station is now sitting back where they were pre-LG&M/classic hits hybrid format.

I wonder if this’ll mark a return to networking 4BC Mornings/workdays from 2GB if ratings do not improve?

In Sydney, the largest share in Smooth’s history, now every commercial FM in the market has reached #1 on at least one occasion.

It’s also a new record high for Smooth in Melbourne.

Radioinfo/Radio Today have some interesting animated graphs at the bottom of the ratings pages of how the stations go up & down & flip spots then back, over the pasts 2 years.

The comments right at the bottom of the Radio Today ratings page are funny but spot on.

Can’t recall if this has been discussed before, but looking at BNE, ADL, PER (markets with no Smooth or Gold station on FM)… I wonder why 6IX in Perth seems to do so poorly compared to ‘like’ stations such as Cruise in Adelaide and 4BH in Brisbane.

Is it the format or is coverage an issue in Perth? (given the AM woes over there)… Perhaps 6IX could benefit from going for a slightly more modern and perhaps softer music mix?

Edit: I see K&JO still struggling in Melbourne, no real surprise there :slightly_smiling_face:

Gee it’s just so astounding that the FM operators in Brisbane seem tone deaf to the market 4BH is serving. When you have an AM music station in that type of position in the ratings surely they realise 4MMM and 97.3 are missing the mark.

Love this. Thank you Melbourne.

Agree. It’s time Lachlan stepped in and demand 97.3 in Brisbane flip to Smooth 97.3 and be No. 1 in all three eastern capitals. He does own 50%.

What ARN have done / might do with 97.3 means the only way is down for them unless common sense prevails.

As Winston Churchill once said “Never before in the history of Melbourne, have so few, been paid so much, to achieve so little”

I kind of think there are a couple of reasons. Firstly 96fm covers the adult music format a lot better than 97.3 or Mix 102.3, or Triple M for that matter.

Also I think historically 94.5 covered adult music a lot better and kept more listeners on FM as they got older, rather than drift to 6iX.

And thirdly, the poor reception for 6iX would play a smaller part, I think.

In the case of Brisbane you could also go back to the early 90s when 4BH failed to convert to FM so Brisbane only had 4MMM and B105 on FM, meaning a lot more listeners stayed on AM (4KQ and 4BH). The continuing success of 4KQ and 4BH was influenced by that.
